We've had the same old ugly little trash can for probably 15 years. Sometimes when we flip the lid open it would pop off the hinge triggering a string of obscenities! I was over a neighbor's house and they had a motion activated trash can. I immediately went home and started my search. I wanted stainless with black, I wanted the hidden trash bag feature, and I wanted it to fit the larger trash bags. Amongst the many Chinese brand I found the Glad brand. While I'm sure it's also a Chinese product, I figured most of what glad does is trash and containers so I decided to give it a shot. I absolutely love it. Who'd have thought a trashcan could make such a difference. It holds the large bags (I think we're using 23 gallon) and it's uniform in size the entire height. The opening is just about as big as can itself. No more shoving trash through a small hole and rarely have to compress trash down into it since it doesn't taper. Another feature I was hoping for was that the motor powers the lid up but then just bumps it down and it goes down with some sort of tension mechanism. It closes completely, but doesn't slam. That's how this one operates. Some motor all the way down which I assume uses twice the battery power. This unit runs on 6 AA batteries. We've not had to change them yet, but it's probably been less than two months. When it comes time to change the bag, be sure to power off the unit with the switch. When you lift the entire lid portion, there's a few detents on the way up and down. When you're putting it back down it takes a good amount of force to get back past the detents. It definitely feels like you're going to break it, but so far it's held up. I believe it's getting easier as it breaks in. The hidden bag feature is easy also. Just a couple bars you lift up, pull the top of the bag around them, then lower them back down. No more bag sticking out of the trash can. That's also a compartment on the back of the can to hold your spare bags. I was concerned I wouldn't like it because of the shape it adds, but it turned out to be fine. Finally, the motion sensor. Once I found the sweet spot, I believe it's been probably 95% accurate. No more having to lift the lid with wet or dirty hands. There's also a manual open and close button. So if you're doing something that requires frequent trips to the trashcan, it'll stay open and wait for you. At the end of the day, it's a trash can But, if you're going to buy an eighty to hundred dollar trash can, you might as well get one that doesn't suck and so far this one has been great. ... show more

The motion detection works great. The only thing I do not like is cleaning the lid. The bars that hold the garbage bag in place are hard to clean. I removed the top to clean, when I put it back together the lid would not open or close all the way. I contacted GLAD for help or to order a replacement part. GLAD sent me an entire new garbage can and lid. It had been 22 months since I originally purchased the product through Amazon. ... show more

this is not my first motion garbage can but it is by far my favorite. large capacity, easy to remove the bag, bag storage in the back of the can and it look sleek in my kitchen. keeps the smells inside the csn where they belong. minor hiccup when first using it - couldn't figure out why nothing was working after i put the batteries in. pushed down on the lid with a little force and that did it. other than that very tiny thing I'm a huge fan of this garbage can. update - can stopped working after 1 year. I contacted glad customer service and they were fantastic. I was asked to send a short video to show that the sensor wasn't responding and due to my technological failings that process had to be repeated several times. the rep, Anna c. was beyond pleasant, patient, and professional. when I finally got it together the replacement was shipped. it was supposed to take a week but wound up getting to me in four days. very pleased that glad stood behind their product. ... show more

Trash can worked great until the motor on the lid stopped working. Emailed their customer services with photos and receipt. Will update once I hear back. Update: called customer services which was simply a recording with their email address. Emailed them on 8/7/23 explaining the issue. They requested my receipt, photos of the lot number, and a video of the item not functioning. They sent me a new one and it arrived 8/11/23. Very quick turnaround! We have replaced this can twice, so we’re now on our third product. We exchanged them (first time through Amazon, second time through the manufacturer) because the lid hinge stopped working; the few days before it stopped completely, it had a grinding sound like it was struggling to open. When the second can broke, my husband took the lid apart and discovered that the plastic gears that operate the opening and closing of the lid had broken (some of the teeth on the gears were broken off). We now realize that it wasn’t a faulty can; it was our teenagers forcibly closing the lid while it was in the open position (because it ‘scared’ them **roll eyes**). We had placed the can in a high traffic area and every time someone walked by it would pop open. The gears were not meant to withstand being forcibly closed when in the ‘open’ position. Here are some suggestions for this can: 1. Place it in a lower traffic area so that it doesn’t pop open every time you walk through the kitchen. 2. When cooking or cleaning and you need it in a convenient spot, use the manual ‘Open’ icon to keep it open while you work then manually close it when you’re done; when you use the manual ‘Open’ icon instead of the motion sensor, the lid will not close until you push the ‘Close’ icon. 3. Turn the power switch off when it’s not in use. It’s probably a good idea to also inform your teenagers (or other stupid people in your household) not to slam the lid shut! ... show more
