  • Ol' Reliable
Pattern Name: Digital Moisture Meter
I worked pest control for 4 years and was in thousands of crawlspaces in that time. I always had this meter with me to get moisture readings in the subfloor system while doing termite inspections and just general crawlspace inspections for moisture mitigation. This meter can take a beating over time and still keep on working. Extremely good on battery life as well. It may not give you the range of information that other meters out there can, but it's simple and it does exactly what it's supposed to. It always seemed to be accurate as well, when compared to similar models from other brands that co-workers used. ... show more

  • Easy to use
Pattern Name: Digital Moisture Meter
I bought this product to test the moisture level on a fence I wanted to stain. It was a great price and served the purpose well. Although there are no instructions, it was easy to find a quick instruction on YouTube. It is very simple to use. The unit comes with protective sleeves on the pins, which I removed, but saved and replaced for storage. A battery is also included so you are ready to go. ... show more

This has been very helpful in determining if a stain on the wall is from a leak. Measures moisture in dry wall and wood. Very easy to use and read the display.

  • Excellent item for the price
Pattern Name: Digital Moisture Meter
The general tools Digital moisture meter is an excellent item for the price. I bought it to test the moisture content of logs I obtained from a tree service to see if they were moist enough to use for growing mushrooms. By drilling holes in logs and inserting mushroom fungus (spawn) into the holes, mushrooms will grow from the logs for about five years. A 30% or higher moisture level is necessary for proper mushroom fungus growth in the wood. That's where the moisture meter comes in, to determine if the moisture level is sufficient. For this purpose, the meter works well. It should be noted, however, that readings will vary with the location on the log being probed with the two sharp prongs and how far and forcefully the prongs are inserted into the wood. It's not precisely accurate with every reading, but that's a function of the degree of penetration, the uniform force of insertion and the area tested (bark or bare ends). This meter would be also be great for determining the reciprocal of what I test for, namely, how dry is the wood for burning. Previously, I had to saw a small piece from each log (much work), weigh the piece with a precision scale, then dry the piece on low for 24 hours in the oven, then weigh again to determine the moisture content. Now I can do this in a few minutes! I recommend that, when using this meter, you push it into both ends of the logs AND in several spots in the bark with the same degree of force, and see if you get consistent results. Use the same force to push the pins, and try to get the same pin depth in each test spot in the wood. A friend used it to check the extent of moisture in his basement carpet after he had some seepage. He was able to identify what areas of the carpet that needed drying so he could focus his fans and heaters effectively. After drying a while, he used the meter to determine which areas were fully dry so he could move his fans and heaters. One final observation: Another reviewer complained about the meter not turning. My advice: READ THE DIRECTIONS. It takes about 4 seconds of holding the 'on' button down to turn the meter on or off. This is a battery saving feature. ... show more

  • Top notch item
Pattern Name: Digital Moisture Meter
This is a great product for the price. Amazon got this to me in a timely manner. My general reason for buying this item was to measure firewood. As far as I can determine, it is very easy to operate, functions as stated, and I believe I made the correct choice for my purposes. I will state here that I did not read all of the reviews, but I read enough of them to decide upon this item. These are my technical observations for those who may have doubts reading some of the other reviews. I wondered about the battery life, so I made some checks. Using my Heathkit IM-2215 digital multimeter, I found that the current draw in the on (no measuring) position using the 200 ma scale, was a steady 5.8 ma. Using the lowest scale of 2 ma, the current draw was 5.8 ma with a fluctuating least significant digit (LSD). In the off position, using the lowest 2 ma scale, I note a current draw of .000 ma. So, my dear friends, if there is any current draw, it would have to be in the micro-ampere range. It probably draws less than my digital clock in the car! I am not worried about the battery life. If you doubt these studies, let me inform you that I have been a licensed radio amateur since 1962. Trust me, I know what I'm doing. Depending on the species of wood, most woods (previously kiln dried) will absorb in a humid environment, in the neighborhood of no more than 13 to 14 % moisture. I got this information from my local lumber producer. I looked at numbers worked out with a formula. I found that interesting, so I probed some timbers down cellar in this nearly 100 year old home. Wood posts and floor joists showed some variation, but in general were 13 to 14 % moisture in my cellar having a humidity level of 80 to 90 percent. My highest joist readings were 15.9 and 16.0 per cent. I have one of those Acu-rite digital devices on the cement floor. The temperature was 61 degrees. The upstairs humidity is currently running at 58 %, which is not ideal. I have been considering a dehumidifier. I hope this information allays any fears you may have purchasing the MMD4E moisture meter. I love it! ... show more
