I have had this for a couple of weeks now and we've used it a bunch (just moved into a new house). I cannot say enough good stuff about this piece of equipment and I wish I'd bought one years ago. I've had to use it to find no less than 15 studs and so far I haven't missed one yet. Its simple, cheap and effective....I wish I had a reason to by another one! I did just peruse the 1 star reviews to see how anyone could give this a bad review. I believe some of the reviews come from people who really didn't understand what they were buying, but there are a couple of complaints that make sense. First, know what you are buying..... drywall is hung on the studs of a wall with screws or nails. This tool is a magnet that finds those screws/nails.....then you can surmise that the stud runs vertical from where the magnet is holding onto the wall. If you have a 4' level....it will help you pinpoint the stud location for hanging things in a particular spot. (Make a little pencil mark where the finder is, then hold the level up vertically until its plumb...unless the stud is not straight you should be able to tell where it is way above and below the mark. There is always the chance that a fastener did not hit the center of the stud. This is just a hazard, but not really the tools fault if you understand how it works. Like I said, in two weeks and over 15 studs....we have yet to miss a stud when we nailed or screwed into the wall. Next....apparently some people have had issues with this working with older plaster/lath walls. I can't comment on the validity of the statement, but if those are the walls you have....at least know it could be an issue. I guess other problems could be excessive paint, very thick sheets of drywall, or fasteners that are not made of iron and won't be picked up by the tool. Point is...... this tool finds the fasteners, not the studs.... you have to work a little bit to figure out where you need to be.... but for $10 this is an absolute win. I have been notorious over the years for putting extra holes in walls when hanging stuff.... I'm sure I'll eventually miss one with this....but for now its been perfect and I have no doubts that I'm going to find way more studs with it than I'm going to miss.

Magnetic Stud Finder - Amazon Review 5/5 Stars. I remember hearing the term “stud finder” when I was younger, and thinking it meant something sexual. In fact, the phrase just typically refers to a tool designed to help you find support beams in your wall. That’s what this item is: it’s a tool that will help you find support beams in your wall. Probably just metal support beams because it’s magnetic, but maybe there’s some way it could find wooden ones too (for example, by magnetizing to metal nails in the wood). Anyway, unless you get more imaginative, or use the term to describe something other than this tool, “stud finder” is not really sexual. Maybe this is important to you. Maybe this is reassuring. Maybe this is a let-down. I bought this tool because I needed to find some support beams in my ceiling and figured that using this tool would help me do that. When you type “stud finder” into Amazon (not some other search engine), you’ll find that there are many versions of this tool. If you’re reading this review, you probably already know that. Anyway, selecting the right tool can be daunting, especially when confronted with so much choice. Too much choice can be overwhelming. Crippling even, in a sort of psychic or emotional or psycho-emotional way. I chose this tool because I didn’t understand why I’d need all the fancy features of the other tools, those features, in my mind at least, running the risk of complicating things. I liked the idea of some simple magnet just guiding the way. I fantasized about putting this tool against my wall, and it sticking there when it would inevitably find a stud under my exploratory reach. I’m giving this tool 5 stars, because it did what I expected it to do, and I’m pretty sure it found me some metal support beams. When you feel it magnetize into place, you might get a rush of excitement, or even confidence in your abilities and in your exploratory reach (that is, the way you so successfully explore your wall with this tool, guiding it to one support beam or another). You might move the tool slowly, as I did, letting it sail smoothly across your wall (or even ceiling!). This can be very calming. Comforting even. Or, if you’re in a rush, or just like to move quickly, you might race it across your wall, like it were a little rocket, or toy car. If you do that, you might feel like a kid playing with a toy car. If you make the appropriate sound effects, engine roaring and tires squeaking and whatnot, you might really feel like a kid playing with a toy car. You might feel young again, whatever that means for you and your personal relationship with time, with your age, with mortality. This magnetic stud finder was a fine purchase for me, and helped me accomplish the thing I wanted to do with the support beams. It might work well for you too. I'm not including photos, but you can use your imagination. Just close your eyes and think "stud finder."

I bought this CH Hanson Magnetic stud finder nearly 10 years ago to replace a similar one that I’d lost, and it has held up amazingly well — a decade later and it still looks brand new, and the magnet hasn’t lost any of its power and the level still works too. The magnet on this tiny little pocket-sized stud-finder is STRONG. Any time I forgetfully slip it into my pocket that I keep my keys in, I have to pry it off of my keys and any other random bits of metal (nails, screws, paper clips, everyday carry keychain tools, etc) I might’ve been carrying around me haha. In addition to working as a stud-finder and quick level-check, the strength of the magnet also makes it handy for quickly finding dropped screws on the ground — just run this along any area where you might’ve dropped something metal, and this little beast will grab it. I like to use this alongside an electric stud-finder when possible — the electric ones (the battery-powered scanners) can be prone to false positives and and often need to be run across walls multiple times, but they can also provide more insight into where the center of the stud is, if there’s the danger of live electrical wires behind the wall, and the rough depth of the wood, etc. — whereas this classic magnet-style one will simply clamp onto whatever part of the wall has some metal behind it… But by using both the electric ones and the old-school magnet style stud finders on separate passes, you can quickly narrow things down to the safest places to drill.

This stud finder works exactly as it is supposed to. It is so strong the it can suck magnets often be referred greater from almost 2" away. It works perfectly through extra thick plaster and paint over the dry wall. However because of its small size that means it has a very small footprint also. You almost have to swipe it across the wall as if you were frosting a cake or mowing a lawn. When you do find a nail it is unmistakable that you found it. I have used to message to find nails. The 1st is to hang it from a string in just pass the string along the wall to let the stud finder drag on the surface of the wall and it will stick hard when it finds a nail. The 2nd is to cup it loosely in your hand and pass your hand back-and-forth across the wall until it suddenly grabs hold. The packaging is anything but frustration free and is the old school piece of double-layered plastic molding sandwich between sheets of chipboard/cardboard. Notice in my photo the it is not much taller than a standard size toothpick. See that the entire package is much smaller than the A1 size box, Amazon's smallest box. Over all, does it work? Yes, exactly as advertised and as a perfect backup if you don't want to require batteries. Would I get it for a job site? Absolutely not. Its small size and therefore small footprint makes it too cumbersome to try to use for more then figuring out where to mount something at home. For the home user that May only occasionly have to figure out where the studs are, it is perfect because it can also double as a refrigerator magnet due to its smaller size. Additional note regarding the refrigerator usage: When this thing gets within about 2" of the refrigerator it will jump out of your hand in clean hard. It requires a decent amount of skoal to get it back-off. We have a calendar held to the refrigerator with 3 clip magnets. This stud finder was powerful enough to not only grab the 1st magnet from an inch away, but also pull the other 2 from the refrigerator and hold the calendar in the air while carrying it to another room and passing it through the door. Usage tip: Once you find the 1st stud, have a tape measure extended several feet and let the magnets of the stud finder hold the extended end of the tape as you hold the base end. Now mark every 16 or 24" to figure out approximately where to check for other studs' exact locations. This will make finding studs a little easier. Hint (for those without access to ask a good carpenter / inspector): An easy way to figure out your stud placement is to find the stud nearest the corner of a Room. (Avoid corners with windows or doors nearby, or corners of the house, as this may cause design layout to vary.) Measure either 16 or 24" (most common), and that will be your base measurement to expect in the rest of your house. Also note that exterior walls may have different / closer stud placement and distance than interior walls. Remember: Building code changes with time or materials used or location of wall. Keep that in mind when checking different parts of your home. {Professionals, please don't read this next part.} The quality of work or extra decisions of carpenters impacts placement. (I've seen "the studs are an average of 24 inches", and "as long as they're somewhere closer than 16 inches we're fine", plus what looks like "We're putting the door / window / outlet right here and that's final! Throw in some extra boards if it doesn't line up with the studs properly. It will be extra solid then, so it's no big deal if it doesn't make sense!") Also, metal doesn't always mean stud. ("Oops! Didn't measure that cut right / cut isn't smooth / didn't place the drywall correctly. But we can just patch it with sheet metal.") + Measure twice, cut once. This way you don't make mistakes. - Cut once and measure twice. That way you'll know how badly off you were and then finally get a rough idea of how you need to guess better next time.

I purchased this mainly to help with the installation of a T.V. wall mount. Being that I plan on hanging a $1000 TV; it was imperative to hit studs accurately. Unfortunately for me, the mount arrived 3 days early (In-Line = Awesome Shipper) and i muddled through the installation process with a borrowed Zircon electric stud finder (what a hassle and I'm glad it's over). I live in a condo with thick sheet-rock and heavy textured plaster. The afore mentioned stud finder had a difficult time finding a stud screw on normal or "Deep Scan" setting. Upon receipt of my C.H Hanson Magnetic stud finder I thought I would test the same process I used during the installation. I found an electrical outlet on the wall and swiped the new stud finder in an "S" pattern to locate the stud on the correct side of the outlet. Within seconds I felt the pull of the magnets toward a screw head. But... that is the easy one. Since I need 2 studs for the mount this is where the guess work generally begins. How far apart are the studs? As a general rule, 16 inches on center is the spacing between wall studs (this set of studs was actually gapped at 16"3/4 on center). Having worked construction I know that things are rarely exact and there is a margin of error. So... I took my new toy and swiped the wall roughly 16 inches away and again within seconds i had located a nail/screw head. This little gem would have saved me roughly 15-20 min of scanning frustration, had I used it for the install. I am generally a fan of low tech and straight forward approaches and the C.H. Hanson does not disappoint! We know that this does the job it was designed for, but what about added features? Well, sticking to the wall makes this small unit hands free when marking a spot, and the built in level rotates in the center for optimal viewing. There is also a small loop on one end that could serve multiple purposes. The unit is compact and comes in at about 4 in long, 1 1/2 in wide, 1 in deep. All being said, For under $10 you can't go wrong here. Add it to your toolbox today, you won't be disappointed! Electronic stud finder = $15-20, inaccurate, time consuming C.H. Hanson = $9, extremely accurate, extremely fast, added small features to make life easier This is really a no brainer NASA spends 2 million to design a pen that will work in zero gravity, Russia uses 10 cent pencil - Robin Williams

I have a terrible track record with buying electronic stud finders: they never work. It never fails. I run an electronic stud finder over the wall and it lights up and beeps, telling me that it just found a stud. Then, after marking the exact spot it said there was a stud, I drill into it, only to discover there’s no stud. My electronic stud finder just lied to me. I installed some floating shelves last weekend and I was extremely irritated at the false-positives my stupid electronic stud finder, the Zircon StudSensor e50, was giving me. I decided I would look this week for something better. I was willing to spend any amount of money on a new stud finder as long as I was confident it would actually work. My research narrowed on the CH Hanson Magnetic Stud Finder. Not only is it the greatest, most accurate stud finder I’ve ever owned, it was also the cheapest one I’ve ever bought. I paid less than nine bucks for it on Amazon. The CH Hanson Magnetic Stud Finder is much different from the electronic stud finders I’ve used before. For one thing, it’s not electronic. It doesn’t use sensors or even a battery. It uses two powerful rare earth magnets that doesn’t need electric power. Instead of looking for a stud, it looks for screws or nails that are embedded into a stud. Find a screw or a nail and you are going to find a stud. You run the CH Hanson Magnetic Stud Finder over the wall in a lazy “S” pattern and when it finds a screw, you know it. Instead of lighting up or beeping, it pulls strongly to the screw or the nail. The pull is so strong that you can take your hand off the tool and it stays on the wall. The powerful rare earth magnets keep the tool fixed exactly to the spot on the wall where the screw or nail is. Not only does this prove there is a stud behind that exact spot, you don’t even have to mark the spot with a pencil. The CH Hanson Magnetic Stud Finder will be the last stud finder I ever buy. It felt good throwing my old electronic stud sensor into the trash. I hope it ends up in a landfill next to a used adult diaper and a VHS copy of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. I just love the CH Hanson Magnetic Stud Finder. It’s the best nine bucks I’ve ever spent.

I use this product to locate and mark studs when installing kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Its the only tool i use. Take it from someone who has installed over 250 cabinets in the last few months.. I get paid per cabinet so moving quickly is a must. This is a huge time saver for finding studs. Electronic stud finders just don't work well in short.. Do your research. I was using a few small rare earth (neodymium) magnets which works well too but they would get lost easily and were harder to hold. A lot of magnets arnt strong enough to grab the screw.. This thing is a good size and the two magnets are very strong (I'll post some pictures). Dropping or even throwing it on The floor won't break it. It's durable like Milwaukee's tools.. Wish they made it in red!! The two magnets are very strong but It won't do damage or leave marks on your wall long as it stays cleab. It having a level inside it is a small plus. It rotates but I wouldn't recommend it for that purpose alone.. just use it before you make your pencil marks so that you know it's not slanted otherwise you will miss it. If you are a professional installing kitchens/ or a DIY hanging picrures looking for a stud finder get this or something that has strong (neodymium) magnets. I know Amazon has a couple other options that use powerful magnets look decent that look decent but just know I read through reviews and all that and I picked this one. Update/edit (July 25th 2018) The other reviews are accurate in that these little guys like to jump ship and go into hiding. I lost the first one I ordered. So that brings me to the only negative thing I've found.. Because the magnetic pull is so strong they will gravitate to to anything metal within a few inches It's easy not to notice when your using an impact driver. Either way, I'd like it if they.. 1. offered a retractable magnetic belt clip with a pencil as an accessory.. 2. Offered a smaller 1 magnet version and a larger 3 to 4 magnet version. 3. Included a string (another method) for a slightly faster process for those that havent learned to guesstimate where the studs will be. I think they could deff improve this product and should provide more use/job specific options. Still, I stand by my initial 5 stars.. This is over all the best stud finder out. Might seem like a small thing but it can really hold things up, drain energy, waste time, and money. Tips: -Youtube how to locate studs and safety when drilling. This and the other reviews will give you an idea of where to aim for with the stud finder.. Take 5 minutes upfront to do this and you will save time overall - the other reviews on here that talk about holding it lightly at first and guesstimate. You have to get a feel for it. Give it a few more patient minutes and it will get very easy. I've heard people say to attach a string and dangle it on the other end against the wall. Swing it back and forth gently to cover more space till it catches on a screw. Not my preference but some claim it's easier.

This is great product to help find a stud in the wall. The concept is very basic and simple. It has a very small but powerful magnet that will be attracted to the metal head of a nail or screw. The magnet is small enough to attach to a nail/screw, but not big enough to be attracted to metal beams or anything else much larger than a nail/screw. Once you find your nail/screw, make your mark, and insert nail/screw. Like all other products out there, this one isn't completely fool proof. THE BAD: -If you are looking for a stud, you are most likely looking at putting a nail/screw into it. Even though you can locate the stud, you still have the risk of hitting electrical wires and cables. Sometimes people will run cables and wires horizontally through studs. Personally, I'd rather be safe than a crispy Do-It-Yourself-er. -No felt pads on the bottom to prevent possible scratching the paint on your walls if you apply too much pressure when you sweep for your studs. THE EH: -The one thing that can throw you off with this tool is if someone before drives a nail or screw into the wall in a place where there isn't a stud. For example, a small nail that was used to hang up a picture and was covered up by paint. Sounds strange, but I ran into that myself. -If you know some architectural standards and common construction practices, it would help speed up the process of finding the stud. -This won't help you find the center of the stud if that is what you are looking for. THE GOOD: -Cheaper and more accurate than most stud finders you'll find in the market. In the end, this product will work perfect for most consumers out there. If you don't mind being a little risky and trust previous tenants/owners/home builder, then this is all you will need to find studs to hang whatever you want to hang. I would recommend using another tool in conjunction with this to locate electrical wires if your planning to do a little more than just hanging pictures
