I recently moved into a house that was built in the 80s. It's one of those houses with weird angles and open spaces, not to mention the 20ft ceiling in places. So annoying. I used to be pretty good at finding studs just by sound and tapping, but not so good at this house. I have some heavy pieces of artwork that even a wall anchor won't hold, need a stud. Works great, We bought a super fancy stud finder which cost way too much and required constant recalibration. Dewalt’s is super easy to use and surprisingly more accurate than higher end stud finders.

If you’re looking for a stud finder this will work, but there is nothing of significance to this one that can’t be found in other brands. It locates studs fairly accurately but also seems to catch a lot of other things in the wall while still IDing them as studs

I had to purchase a separate tool (magnet) to verify accuracy. The instrument indicated studs that magnet did not attach to b/c there was no hardware. No hardware-no stud!

    • Doesn’t find the studs
I misplaced my old stud finder and bought this one after looking at some different ones. I thought it was the right price point for a simple device, which is all I needed. But then it failed, repeatedly, to identify studs I knew were there—it found them one time, but not a second time, when I was testing out its accuracy and reliability. It told me there was a stud where there really wasn’t one, too. I marked it, was hanging a holder for my brooms, and thankfully I always use a small test drill bit first, to make sure the stud is where the device tells me. It wasn’t. I had to use a drywall anchor instead, which wasn’t my first choice; I was trying to place the hanger where it would have at least two studs, but thanks to this thing, there was only one in the middle instead of two at the ends like it told me. If it’s going to be that inaccurate and useless, I may as well thump the wall with my fist like I did after losing my Stanley one. I don’t think any studfinders in my price range are going to be all that, but I was really disappointed that a DeWalt branded one was so lame. I love my DeWalt tools—batteries and tools are still doing great after >10 years—so I guess I expected more than I should have here. It was returned, and my old Stanley (which owns DeWalt now) was found and put back into service—just as inaccurately! (Sigh.) I’m back to thumping on the wall, or else unscrewing the outlet cover to figure out what side is attached to a stud. ... show more

This was a replacement to my older stud finder that was working well for years. I moved into a new home and some of the walls are metal. My old one was having trouble finding the studs so I thought it was time to update. I’m glad I did! This is an awesome stud finder. Very sleek and thin. And was able to locate all types of studs I have been looking far - I like how it has the arrows on each side so you can easily locate the center of the stud and that it has a hole so that I can mark down the location with a pencil or screw and not have to guess like my last one. Finds the center of the stud easily. However, There may be some slight false readings so you have to run it 2–3 times to make sure it’s in the center, but overall pretty accurate. Never rely on one testing only. Always make sure you slide it against the wall more than once. Thank you, DEWALT. Your products haven’t disappointed me so far.
