Style: Montana 760i
Nice to have universal C style charge now. As with any new gps, getting your maps loaded, then all the settings. I had a 750 so its the same basic unit

  • The touch screen is a great Improvement from older handhelds
Style: Montana 710
I upgraded from a Garmin 76CXs which is more than 20 years old. Using Basecamp I was able to download all of my waypoints from my old Garmin. I was then able to upload them into the new 710. I really like this screen and the ability to use your fingers to move the map rather than that old style button to move the cursor it's much faster and precise. I was also able to use old maps that I had purchased on CDs. I installed the Topo Canada maps using my CDs which only installs into mapsource, which is not supported by Garmin anymore and replaced by basecamp. You have to get the very latest update of mapsource which I think is 2010. Once your cd maps are installed in Mapsource the maps will show up in basecamp. Then using map install in Basecamp I was able to install the entire Topo Canada into my new 710. It worked well but I've learned that you cannot delete the Topo Canada maps that I installed using the handheld there's no way to delete them out. You have to hook it up to basecamp again to uninstall anything that you put in using Basecamp. You can modify and delete waypoints using only the 710 that you put in using Basecamp but not maps themselves. There are some quirks with the software that I am hopeful will improve over time to make it more user friendly, but this handheld was only released a month and a half ago so it's pretty new. Overall I'd say I'm happy with the unit I plan on taking it up to a remote large lake in Canada to go fishing this spring and I'm looking forward to using it. ... show more

  • Stuck in Boot/Reboot Loop
Style: Montana 760i
The store/shipper was great, no problems there. But the 760i got stuck in a death loop; basically a reboot/boot loop and no amount of trouble shooting could fix it. I had to return the device.

  • The 710 serves my needs well.
Style: Montana 710
Wanting a larger screen for using on the ATV with my aging eyes, I found myself bouncing back and forth between the Montana 710 and the Tread2. I liked that the Tread had a bigger screen but with that the price was also more. The Montana 710 went on sale and sealed the deal. Garmin GPS's are feature rich, which honestly most of them I probably will not use. The screen size is a nice step up from the Montana 600t which has been a very good gps but the screen size for use on an ATV was just to small for my liking. Still good though for bringing on a walking venture through the woods. Also, its rugged construction is well suited for use on an ATV as it will be exposed to rain, vibration and dust/dirt. I used Garmin Basecamp to transfer waypoints etc. from the 600t, The transfer was easy and quick to do. I also installed a micro 32G sd card and downloaded the 24k topo map to it. So far, no shut down issues (black screen as some have reported) or any other hickups to report. ... show more

  • Dam, It's Big
Style: Montana 760i
This is a huge heavy device. The screen is nice. The symbol for your present location is very small and hard to see on the screen against a map background. The memory should be much larger. How am I supposed to carry this thing? No carry strap or carabiner, or anything is included. It is way too large for example, a jeans pocket. The rubberized exterior would fight any sort of pocket insertion. This seems to be more intended to be sort of a vehicle-mounted device, or something. ... show more
