  • 3 stars for Google Maps sharing
Size: 6 Inch Style: Navigator
I purchased this for my job. I drive from site to site all day long 10 to 14 hours a day. At work we use an app with client site address buttons that, when tapped, take you to the Google maps app and insert the addresses automatically. The reason I wanted this gps is to integrate it and not use my phone. Garmin says they had a special team working directly with Google so they work together. Using Google maps you can share to the Garmin gps via the Garmin Drive app. Great. That means I can easily shoot those addresses to the Garmin GPS. Or so I thought. That's all fine and well, but it is simply the worst. Absolutely the worst. The first test was the drive to work in the morning. It kept telling me to take all these exists. Uh no, I know how to get there thanks. I arrived at work and zoom out on the GPS. It was routing clear to the ocean. Through the day I found the routes the gps received were consistently all over the place. Never once did it take me to the right place. From a professional standpoint I would fire all involved. What I found is; if I abandoned that export-to-Drive method(share) completely and just copy & paste the addresses from Maps to the Drive app directly it worked without issues fairly consistently, at least 90% of the time. I still had issues with the Garmin GPS search telling me addresses don't exist entering manually to the GPS. Google maps finds the same input without issue. One other time it took me 20 minutes to the northeast of town when the actual location was 5 minutes almost around the corner, which Google maps had no trouble with. This was manually entering the address into the GPS directly. I would advise you to double check all of your addresses and routes ahead of time before you even start driving, because it could save you an hour plus fuel costs. Aside from my reason for buying I'd still give it 3 stars. You have one job, to find addresses. If I enter a valid address and you can't find it then you failed at your one job. I'd also recommend burning the extra cash on the larger screen, the 8". **UPDATE 11/17/2021** It's stopping navigating for no reason. I've been within a few turns of my destination and the GPS just stops navigating. It shows the map actively, but as far as navigation it stops completely. I have to pull over and turns out the unit is completely frozen. I have to power cycle it and start over entering the address again. Also, unfortunately there's more, I'll stop at a gas station(for gas) and the unit remains on the *always on 12v* and should still be directing like nothing happened when I get back in the car. Not always. Sometimes the GPS screen has completely turned off. Hitting the power button does nothing. Holding the power button does nothing. I end up having to unplug the power completely and waiting a bit, then plugging it back in and starting navigation all over again. Meanwhile there's still full current to the plug it's connected to throughout this. **UPDATE 12/13/2021** On the lockups/freezing: It's been just shy of a month since my last update. About two weeks since I've had any freezing or unresponsiveness issues. I can only assume there has been an update that's fixed something. When unplugging the power, the device auto-updates before shutting off. If you hit the power button instead of unplugging it, it'll be a pain to turn back on. Just hold the button for like 10 seconds and wait. It'll turn on. It just takes it's time doing it. Well, that's pretty conclusive for me. I think I'm done here. Good luck out there with the way people drive now days. ... show more

  • Returning this item
Size: 8 Inch Style: Navigator
I looked forward to receiving the Garmin 86. I wanted to have a larger screen and I was interested in using the portrait mode. Unfortunately, I never got to use it. Basically, the unit was dead on arrival. Usually, one defective unit I would not hold against a company, but in this case, it seems to be an ongoing problem for Garmin. After trying my unit multiple times, after less than 5 minutes each time, the unit would shut down. I suggest before buying, you go to your favorite search engine and search for "why does my garmin gps keep turning off"? No doubt you'll get multiple hits. One of the very first hits is a page on the Garmin site that specifically addresses this issue. So for them to do this, it must come up a lot. And the advice they give? Clean out your car's auxiliary socket. Really? Why does my cell phone charge just fine when plugged into the same socket? Or how about the suggestion to only use the Garmin provide an adapter. Really? What's going on, is not the Garmin standard USB? (Assuming my adapter is high enough wattage, it should just work.) Anyway, I only used the Garmin adapter, and as I stated, I still have the shut-off problem Additionally, while I did get a chance to try the device while it was on for a few minutes, I didn't think much of the user interface. This is subjective, but I thought that my 8-year old Magellan GPS unit had a clearer design and easier-to-read map details. Sending it back. I just don't trust Garmin. ... show more

  • not easy to transfer from past devices.
Size: 8 Inch Style: Navigator
transferring procedure from previous Garmin device is terrible! Issues with Mac devices. There is no gravity mounting pad to set your device on the dash. They changed the size of the ball that snaps into mounting device just enough for past equipment not to work. Customer service are super nice, patient people but were not given solutions to the issues. Software no longer transfers recent destination addresses as in the past. If you did not save each address you don't get it transferred. Can't find anywhere that it tells you that. Have had great service in the past with three or four models Not this time. bummer... ... show more

  • No Routing Choices
Size: 8 Inch Style: Navigator
There are only two Routing Choices. Fastest and Straight Line. What use is Straight line in a vehicle??? Needs Shortest Route at a minimum. Also Screen for Information shows a Compass and total trip mileage at the top of screen which can not be changed. Compass and trip data is shown in other places on the screen and can be changed. Compass is a waste of real estate. It needs to be programmable like the others. Also routing is in error in complex areas, causing driver to be routed through inefficient routes. Screen is large and could be considered a view blocker by police. ... show more

  • An Excellent Addition to my Jeep Gladiator
Size: 7 Inch Style: Navigator
When I bought my Jeep it did not have on-board navigation. I really missed it as I had it in my prior vehicle. After doing my research I chose this product and am not disappointed. It has many more features than the standard navigation in most infotainment systems. Very intuitive to configure and it has lifetime updates to the map and traffic. Excellent hi-def display. I highly recommend. ... show more

  • Plug style different from early Garmin
Size: 6 Inch Style: Navigator
Getting out of a 6 year old Nuvi 2597 5". I wanted to get the latest model release but, my bad, I overlooked the compatibility list that does not include the BC-30 camera. But before you even get to whether it accepts BC-30 signals and content, the older -30 receiver cable can not plug into the newer display's power receptacle. My situation was compounded in that I had mod'd and embedded the BC-30 cable into the vehicle, routing it to an embedded power supply. If I didn't want to revert to a dangling power cord, the embedded routing with the older style cable would have to be reworked and I wasn't up for that. Instead I retreated, had Amazon swap the 66 for the 65 (at 7") which does have the older plug style and (confirmed) does show BC-30 content. Amazon service was quick on original delivery and the swap and the 66 did work fine during my very brief checkout. ... show more
