  • Update Update Update Update
Size: 5" Style: W/ Lifetime Maps (USA + CAN) Pattern Name: GPS Navigator
We just returned from a trip through Canada and the Rockies and it worked wonderfully. The most important thing to know about buying a GPS is to update them right out of the box. All GPS units are ALWAYS back level when you purchase them new or “certified”. Many of the other less reviews I have read are due to needing updates. The updates are not just for the maps. They are for GPS Operating Systems and are critical. This particular one have about 9 GPS Software Updates and a huge Map Update. It doesn’t matter the brand name or how much you spend the updates are the keys to success. Hope this is useful. ... show more

  • Read the fine print! No traffic data without a smart phone!
Size: 5" Style: W/ Lifetime Maps + Traffic (USA) - S Pattern Name: GPS Navigator
Bought this for my husband for Christmas - and we are quite disappointed. Why did Garmin think it was a good idea to require a smart phone to get traffic updates? I might as well use Google maps if I have to use my smart phone! The cable to get the traffic updates (w/o using your phone) is a whopping $60! My old Garmin gets traffic w/ no other app needed, and I don't think this "new and improved" unit is a step forward. Update: So we bought the traffic cable, but it did not work. Eventually we figured out that the Garmin we purchased came in the nuvi 3590LMT-S packaging, which stated that the compatible traffic cable was the GMT 60. HOWEVER, the unit IN the 3590 box was the Drive 51 (which was the model I purchased). Makes you wonder how the unit got in the wrong box - and if somebody else's is mixed up as well See attached pictures. Now we have to pay shipping to return the cable, and purchase a new one. What a hassle! ... show more

  • Waste of Money ~ Great big POS !
Size: 5" Style: W/ Lifetime Maps (USA + CAN) Pattern Name: GPS Navigator
Previously owned a Garmin nüvi 40LM. Had to replace it when the USB connector died. I was extremely satisfied with the Nuvi 40, and out of necessity; decided to try this model of Garmin GPS. Frankly, it is garbage. The drive 51 is very often inaccurate in telling you when to turn, particularly in more rural places. The unit often does not identify turns until you are in or past an intersection. Despite setting the unit to avoid unpaved road, it constantly sent me to unpaved road, particularly while in Vermont. The unit often makes you drive in a circle, literally; before setting back to the needed road. The touch screen is too sensitive and you are constantly needing to head back to the correct screen. While in the car, you can't use just any old USB charger when you need to charge other devices while driving. You must buy a different Garmin made charger., And oh by the way, if the lighter socket is right behind the gear shift, you can't even plug in the additional garmin unit until you are in gear. You would think they'd they'd have designed it to bend 45 or 90 degrees. Whole towns which appear on a printed maps are missing or misidentified with this unit. You best have a printed map with you at all times. It is very hard to change the route with this unit. There are other things you find very irritating with this unit. If you will be traveling outside of very developed areas, look elsewhere for a GPS. So far as I'm concerned this unit is much more of a hazard than a benefit. ~~~ I HATE THIS UNIT ~~~ ... show more

  • Must have for crossing the border to Canada
Size: 5" Style: W/ Lifetime Maps (USA + CAN) Pattern Name: GPS Navigator
I have had to go to Canada for a few appointments and this GPS saves me so much worry. You don't need to pay for extra data to pull up directions on your phone; this GPS covers you. I had an older Garmin GPS before buying this model. Please be aware that the older versions ask you if you want to turn off the tolls in an options menu of what to avoid. This model will PROMPT you after you put in the address. It will say "this road has tolls, do you want to continue or find an alternative route" or something similar. The feature IS THERE. ... show more

  • Good and Bad
Size: 5" Style: W/ Lifetime Maps + Traffic (USA) - S Pattern Name: GPS Navigator
This Garmin display is bigger than our older Garmin and we love that. Some of the display items like speed are smaller, but yet other functions are improved. But one of the most negative issues is that you don’t always get the fastest route, even though GPS is set up for that. Have compared the route with my older Garmin and the new one has added anywhere from 10-60 minutes to the ride. Not only that, sometimes it takes you out of your way, instead of the direct route. When you’re traveling thousands of miles that’s a huge problem. Another negative is if you don’t change to the city you’re traveling to prior to entering the address, the search is conducted for your tri-state Area. We have updated the maps but issues still exist. We have reverted to our older, more dependable unit. Garmin, please address these issues. ... show more

  • A very useful tool
I usually use my phone for directions, but lately it seems that using the phone's GPS system significantly drains the battery AND my data allowance. Finally decided to buy another Garmin (had one years ago) as I figured it would pay for itself and be a better deal than increasing my data allowance. The Garmin will pay for itself in just a few short months. This one is easy to use and does a great job. I am very happy with my purchase. ... show more

  • Downloadable Maps Do Not Work Yet
I purchased this unit after carefully reviewing its capabilities versus those of competing units. One important feature that led my evaluation was the ability to use maps from other regions. To download a Garmin map into the unit, one must use of a free app called Garmin Express. Unfortunately, as of the writing of this review, Garmin Express does not allow the installation of new regional maps with the Drive 61 or 51 units. I spent several hours trying to make it work (the night before a trip to Europe) and an additional 1.5 hours with tech support (the day of the trip). Tech support was able to reproduce the error with their own test unit and are working on a fix. My interactions with Garmin since have been wonderfully professional, but highly disappointing. It's been too many hours across too many days and I am unwilling to invest more. I will be returning the unit for a refund. Comment to Garmin: My final solution is to use free offline maps from Google on the iPad I already own, even though I was willing to buy a dedicated device from you. So, this particular failure of the QA team at Garmin translates into a loss of a customer, lost revenue and hurts your brand. Why wasn't this tested before releasing the product to consumers? ... show more
