  • Works great, makes great chips
This model s3 is great for chipping small to medium branches. We have just finished chipping an entire mulberry tree, and before that clearing a pile of dried brush. The out shoot is just high enough to put the cuttings into a wheelbarrow, which is very convenient. It really likes green wood, but has not dulled the blade with dry wood either. I have not bogged it down to the point of killing the motor, I just feed as a fast as it will take it. It will chip 3” branches as advertised, but we mostly did 1.5” and smaller as I wanted the rest for firewood. I like this better than chipper shredders because it allows you to feed branches that have small side branches in. Typically chipper shredders need everything cleaned off first to fit in the chipper inlet. The downside is this won’t do a great job with plants. (We did a lot of dried ground cover through it, and you will need a push stick to get it to feed) ... show more

  • This is a chomper!!
We bought it originally for wood chips for the chicken runs. However it works so good it's cleaning up the property. It does branches thicker then expected. It's loud but very efficient!

  • Does the job but the hopper could be larger
First, this is NOT hard to start. Saw a review someone had trouble. If you use the choke and set the speed to max, it starts on the first pull every time. Second, about the hopper. For sticks it's fine, but, if you are doing a lot of leaves, you can't push it. I was hoping with a chipper/shredder that was not an upside down weed wacker, that I could freely stuff the hopper and get the job done quickly. It works better with small leaves, but we have leaves that makes you feel like you are raking 8.5x11 sheets of paper. So, the trick is, you need to pick up the leaves loosely, drop them in the hopper and let the "slide" in. The key word is slide. If you put too many in too fast, the leaves will clog the hopper and nothing gets to the blades. Think rush hour traffic and there are so many cars on the road that you aren't moving. Once you develop that pace of feeding the hopper, the job goes fairly quickly. I have an F350 with an 8 foot bed and normally fill it 4-5 times when cleaning up the front yard alone. With this, it was about 3/4 full. saves me a lot of walking from the yard to the truck filling it with leaves and mostly, only one trip to the recycle center to dump them vs. 4-5 that I used to do. A larger hopper would be nice, but this gets the job done and very satisfied. ... show more

  • Does and excellent job with limbs less then 2 inches
Assembly was straight forward - took about 30 minutes. Does not come with oil. Have used for 20 hours. The chipper is very sturdy and well built. I liked that my wheelbarrow fit under the output shoot. The chipper chewed through limbs 2 inches and under without issue. Larger limbs need to be handled more carefully in chipper tended to stall. I found that guiding limb slowing and twisting (creating a pencil point on the end) help with larger limbs. I also had a larger limb I used to press smaller pieces in the chipper. Had no issues clearing a jam the few times it occurred. Engine always started either on first or second pull. Blade is still very sharp after 20 hours of use. Overall, I would recommend this chipper. ... show more

  • Can not recommend for numerous reasons
I typically rent a larger chipper each year, but this year I only had smaller cuttings and there were no smaller chippers available to rent, so figured I'd invest in this for regular maintenance. The issues began fairly quickly with assembly: the instructions are pretty terrible, and the actual assembly diagrams are so small as to be nearly useless. There is not a single washer with all of the bolts, and access to the bolts and nuts is often poorly designed so you're switching from ratchet to wrench constantly. You can see numerous places where the parts were hung from a wire to powder coat, and those areas aren't coated so will likely rust. Once assembled and filled with oil and gas, the chipper started on the second pull and I left it to idle for 15 minutes. Now the list of additional issues begins: the choke is useless; my chipper will only run with the choke in the On position...stalls if you try and close it (or perhaps the sticker is backwards). The throttle doesn't really do anything. There is a throttle wire but when you decrease throttle the machine only drops a few RPMs and you can see the wire just gets slack, it's not actually closing the throttle. The lack of washers immediately became an issue: there is a knob to tighten the output chute into position. Just while idling this came loose and the chute flap dropped. I tightened this repeatedly and eventually just added a flat and lock washer which helped. Now for the biggest issue, the actual chipping. I primarily have large piles of long new growth from citrus trees. I pruned them a few days prior to receiving the machine so I could chip them slightly less then green, which is what most chippers recommend in my experience. I started with a branch about 1/4" in diameter that had some smaller branching typical near the end. I placed it into the feeder, and it did begin to chip but it has no draw, so it won't pull the branch into the machine to continue chipping. So I used a push stick and was able to get it all through. These are tiny branches less than an 1/8" in diameter and still pliable, there's no scenario where they shouldn't easily get drawn in and chipped without manual force. I tried a few more of the same size with similar results: each had to be manually pushed through. So I decided to test a larger diameter just to see if it would grab and pull better. It did not. It was like trying to get rid of a piece of wood with a grinder...I had to push the entire thing through the machine. The engine did not bog down and shown any signs of struggle, it seems like some sort of engineering problem with the design of the blades or wheel they're installed on. So I shut the machine down and decided to check the blades, thinking perhaps they were dulled or installed wrong, etc. So I removed the four bolts and checked them and the blades appeared in near perfect condition. So at this point, I can only assume that all of the general issues continue on with the machine's actual chipping capability, or there is something wrong with just my unit. In either case, with the time wasted waiting to receive it, on the poorly guided assembly, and the various attempts at troubleshooting, it's a frustrating exercise that's left me with the same large piles of branches and a larger pile of aggravation. I'd recommend renting or perhaps investing in a nicer machine if you will use it. ... show more

  • [pretty good]
[blade got dull after 4 hours. I was shoving some fat pine branches in it. I sharpened the blades on a bandsaw sharpener with a angled blade rest. I steepened the angle by just a CH and it cut more aggressive. This thing is really awesome, you just have to be prepared to sharpen the blades and to be as precise as you can. ... show more
