Great window ac unit, blows cold to very cold depending on your settings. Fan speeds work without any issues and blow plenty of air. Installation was easy and took about 15 minutes with two people and they comes to putting the unit into the window. I have used this about 3 months now and barley notice a change in my electric bill. Great quality and design. Very comfortable at night and the sound while running isn't loud. Very compatible with my window as well as the color. Solid choice to cool off your room ... show more

Short version: Cools our 10x14 bedroom effectively Fit awkwardly into our windows - extending pieces seemed less than effective from a sealing/insulating perspective Long version: My husband and I have been miserable all summer. It seems like we picked the one room in the house with the worst air flow to sleep in. Rather than call an HVAC, we got this window unit. * Installation: 3.5/5 - The installation was fairly painless but we had to drill holes in our window sills. The extensions made to cover the gaps between the unit and the window frame are not ideal. We could feel heat radiating from them if we put our hands near them. I’m not an expert but I imagine this is making our AC work harder by letting more heat in. We will get some insulating foam board to fill these gaps eventually. It’s not a huge deal, but it is a somewhat annoying extra cost. * Power/effectiveness: 5/5 - I chose the 5,000 BTU because I didn’t want to trip the breakers with a more powerful unit. It works well. We can sleep comfortably and sometimes we even wake up feeling a little chilly, which is nice. It’s worth noting that this wouldn’t be very effective at cooling a larger space. * Noise: 4.5/5 - It is a little noisy. If you are used to sleeping with a big box fan on high speed, like I am, it is comparable to that. I don’t mind the noise. To be fair I have selective hearing. Great A/C for the bedroom. My central A/C needs repair and this is holding me over. Didn't want a remote or electronic timer, too much to go wrong. It is not so 'Quiet" (-1 star) but it beats the heat and humidity. I slept well in the cool room and generally wake up early. If its cool by then, open the other window . Couldn't use the install kit for my 18" wide window, made a frame out of 1"X2"s. Good enough! Glad they had the unit size in the description. ... show more

This little A/C unit (for casement windows) was a rock star. I bought it, taking a chance that it would be worth it, especially at $180.00. It arrived double boxed and when I opened the first box I could see that they had shipped it upside down. Great, here we go, $180.00 down the drain! So, I turned it over and let it sit for 48 hours. I have been using the Frigidaire FFRA051WAE air conditioner for a few weeks now. So far I would say it is a good air conditioner at a great price. It is much smaller and lighter than my previous air conditioner but still very powerful. This specific model weighs 40lbs. I use this AC unit to cool a small bedroom and the 5000 BTUs is plenty. My room gets extremely cold in an hour running on the High Cool 7 setting. Helpful tip - if you want your room to stay cold at night and the overnight temperature is going to dip into the 50s, run the AC for 1-2 hours on the High Cool setting before the temperature drops below 60 degrees, then shut it off for the night. If you install some cheap insulation foam on your windows and doors your room will stay cool much longer. Never run a window AC when the temperature outside is below 60 degrees because it can freeze up the unit. I ran my previous air conditioner everyday in the summer and never knew why it kept shutting off on its own on cold nights. I thought there was a short in it. There must have been an internal chip failsafe that kept my old air conditioner from destroying itself... this is why it still works to this day. This Frigidaire air conditioner was relatively easy to install right out of the box and fit securely in my window. The only tool I needed was a philips screwdriver. A handy person could probably install this AC unit by themself in about 10 minutes. Two notable mentions from the installation manual... the 5/16" pitch is built in to the design of the AC unit so no need to worry about doing it yourself. Pitch is the backward tilt which causes water to exit the back of the machine and drain to the outside. In step 1 on page 2 they mention placing the unit on the floor to install the side panels but what they don't specify is that you must place the unit on its back to do so. To get the accordion panels in place lay the air conditioner on its back with buttons face up and slide each panel through the 4 holes on each side. You'll know when you've done it correctly. I almost didn't buy this air conditioner due to the negative reviews about it not cooling and/or breaking right away. Am starting to think that people give too much weight to negative product reviews these days. Electronics are generally tested before sale and rarely fail right out of the box. Paying extra on an extended warranty is betting on your electronic to fail which is almost always a losing venture. It's also worth noting that most people never leave positive reviews on any items they buy, they only leave a review if something is wrong with it. This behavior highly skews product reviews in a negative way. My main complaint regarding this Frigidaire air conditioner is that there is no built in timer. But that would likely have raised the price closer to $300. My old air conditioner had a timer but was very heavy and much harder to install. There are timers online you can buy that should work with air conditioners. But as mentioned previously if you insulate your room properly you can probably get by running this AC unit for just an hour or two most nights. My only other complaint is a minor one. I leave my air conditioner plugged in and turn the unit on and off on a daily basis. I would much rather have push buttons on an air conditioner than a knob that you turn that could eventually break off. Final note: When I first got this Frigidaire air conditioner it did not produce super cold air immediately right out of the box. I believe it took a few hours. This is something to keep in mind. It is easy to install and I don't think it is as loud as some of the comments make it out to be. It will work just fine when you turn it on. If you want to use it a second time that's when the problems start. Newer air conditioners don't really drain like the older ones did. They are designed to hold the condensed water in the base so the condenser fan splashes the water on the condenser coils supposedly to make the unit more efficient and it will until you use it in the real world. The water will collect dust, dirt, bugs, pollen, and pollutants from the air. After a month or so it is throwing muddy corrosive water on the condenser coils plugging them up and corroding them at the same time. Over time the condenser becomes less efficient and it cools less and less or starts to trip. Essentially, like most of today's products it is designed to look great on a work bench when it gets it's Energy Star rating but will not last more than a year or two depending on your environment. Just after the warranty runs out. I was ok with this but something else happened. I used it twice for a total of about 10 hours then we had a few cooler rainy days. The third time I just turned it on low fan and I could hear it struggling to come up to speed sloshing around in the water. It sounded bad, like the motor was going to burn out. I has to partially uninstall it to open the window to drain all the water out. So the brand new condenser fan barely has enough torque to start up if the pan is full. If you don't fully understand this or want to see how to fix it search YouTube for "Fix Air Conditioner that don't drain, makes noise, dirty & uses too much power". The Јоhn “HEADSMASHER” Daniel channel has a great video with a quick fix. Ironically there is even a link to this AC on amazon there. Sorry I had to change this from two stars to one star. Simply drilling one hole worked for about one week before it got plugged up. The major problem is that if you turn it on low fan after even a little rain and the bottom is filled with water it doesn't have enough power to get up to speed so you hear the noise of the water splashing around and the hum of the motor trying to get up to speed. If you turn it directly to low cool you get the same noise plus the compressor trying to kick in but it's having problems because the fan is sucking up most of the power. To run it reliably put it on high fan till the motor gets up to speed (about 5 seconds) then high cool. You can switch to low cool after about 10 minutes unless it's raining. ... show more

By far this is the cheapest option you have out there among in-stores or online. It definitely gets things cool quickly (I have a very tiny bedroom, about 8 x 14 ft). My frustrations include- 1) poor window fitment- the slide-out sides do not go flush to bottom/top OR sides- huge gaps even with the insulation strips they provide and stuff I had to buy on my own.. Even with using tape, there's visible gaps, insects can freely come in, and it sounds like all 3 windows in the room are wide open sound-wise. 2) temperature regulation- (this applies to being on low or high cool)- If I set it to 7 out of 7- the room will quickly go to 68 degrees. Over the course of the night it will occasionally drop to 64 (which is nice I'll admit, but not nice enough for me to want to pay for that!) so if I nudge the dial to 6, it will within 30-40 minutes hit around 76 (NOT nice). The temperature really swings wildly so there's no one setting I can keep it up and have to get up when I'm sweating or its too chilly- I don't understand the poor regulation 3) After minutes of running, it will, with an enormously loud sudden sigh of exhaustion/expulsion, stop running, BEEP annoyingly, pause for a few seconds, then start running again. It does this continuously when running. This is incredibly high maintenance, I know it can get my room comfortable but it sure can't maintain it in a comfort zone (or do so with just normal/acceptable running noise). I'd like to say had I know how wishy washy it was I would've spent more for something with true temperature settings or a remote, but I'm really cheap and I'm stuck with this one. (Not saying if I didn't win the lottery I'd huck it out the window and get one in the $200-$300. I have it plugged into a very expensive APC surge/brown-out/battery back up unit in which a lamp, my Echo Dot, and my cell phone charger are plugged in (8 more outlets available). I cannot plug in/run my 5.7 amp Bissell Pro Pet Spot Cleaner without tripping the whole thing (as I found out a few nights ago when my puppy threw up several times in the middle of the night). I wouldn't recommend this unit unless you a) are cheap/broke like me or b) are not temperature swing sensitive and sleep like the dead straight through the night ... show more
