๐Ÿš€ Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The 5000 BTU AC unit generally impresses with its small size and energy efficient cooling. It is easy to install and delivers impressively in cooling fairly large and small spaces alike. However, some users report that some adjustments may be required, such as separating the thermostat sensor wire from the evaporator coil to prevent short cycles. Humid environment users may also find the unit stores condensation rather than draining it, which can lead to somewhat loud noises.

Pros

  • ๐Ÿ‘ Efficient cooling for small and larger spaces
  • ๐Ÿ‘ Energy efficient
  • ๐Ÿ‘ Fairly straightforward to install
  • ๐Ÿ‘ Simple design with no unnecessary frills

Cons

  • ๐Ÿ‘Ž The 5000 BTU model may require some adjustments due to factory issues
  • ๐Ÿ‘Ž Stored condensation may result in occasionally loud noises
  • ๐Ÿ‘Ž No drain mechanism in case of excess water build-up
  • ๐Ÿ‘Ž Limited connectivity features such as Wi-Fi and remote control

Should I Buy It?

Based on the reviews, the 5000 BTU AC unit seems like a great temporary solution or addition to a central AC system, especially considering its energy efficiency. However, potential buyers in very humid climates or those wanting high-tech connectedness may want to research more options. Overall, if you're willing to potentially make some manual adjustments, this might be a strong choice for its performance and price point.

  • Great little unit for small spaces
Size: 5,000 BTU Mechanical Controls
Quick update - It was in the upper 90s here all weekend. I turned the A/C unit on about an hour before bed every night and it would cool from close to 80 to mid-70s in an hour when set on "high cool" and 6 out of 7. That made it comfortable to fall asleep. I then turned it to "low cool" and went right to sleep - no issue with the sound. The first night, I was actually chilly when I woke up in the middle of the night so I changed it to 5 out of 7 for the temp setting. That seemed to be perfect. It stayed comfortable all night. To reiterate - this is for a single, small room. The 2 rooms we put these in are 150 - 200 s.f. each. We keep the doors closed when they're running. If that's what you're looking for, you'll probably be very happy! But if you want to cool a bigger space, buy a bigger and more expensive A/C. See below for more detailed initial review: I bought 2 of these little A/C units for the upstairs bedrooms in my house. I live in the south and when it is in the 90s for several weeks at a time, the upstairs of my house stays hot even at night. I got these to make the bedrooms for comfortable for sleeping. They are small units, only suitable for a single room. The nice thing is that a single person can easily carry them from the porch to wherever you want to install them. They are not super heavy. I got mine upstairs just fine. The installation is also very simple. You don't need anything extra - the package comes with the top bracket and the side panels. If you want to buy a support bracket, you could but it is not a heavy unit so not necessary. Installation took me an hour in total. That included a quick trip to the hardware store for an extra piece of wood to put on my window frame. If you have a storm window frame on the outside that is a bit higher than the inside window sill, you'll need a piece of wood. This is explained in the instruction manual. Once we got that, it was quick work to drill a few holes and put it up. The air conditioner feels very secure and does not wobble. It also does come with weather stripping if you want to get all fancy, but we'll just keep the bedroom doors closed so I didn't get too careful. The unit is remarkably quiet! The extra piece of wood we added to the window sill probably helped. But it sounds like something I can sleep through no problem. It sounds like white noise - kind of like a hotel air conditioner but it is a constant hum so it won't bother most people. It does not rattle. But keep in mind, this is not a $500 air conditioner and it does make noise! It is just soothing noise because it is making the air cool and happy. Overall, I recommend this air conditioner if you have a single room that you want to cool down, don't mind a humming white noice sound, and also don't want to spend a lot of money. ... show more

  • Works well, insulating around unit will require extra effort
Size: 5,000 BTU Mechanical Controls
Short version: Cools our 10x14 bedroom effectively Fit awkwardly into our windows - extending pieces seemed less than effective from a sealing/insulating perspective Long version: My husband and I have been miserable all summer. It seems like we picked the one room in the house with the worst air flow to sleep in. Rather than call an HVAC, we got this window unit. * Installation: 3.5/5 - The installation was fairly painless but we had to drill holes in our window sills. The extensions made to cover the gaps between the unit and the window frame are not ideal. We could feel heat radiating from them if we put our hands near them. Iโ€™m not an expert but I imagine this is making our AC work harder by letting more heat in. We will get some insulating foam board to fill these gaps eventually. Itโ€™s not a huge deal, but it is a somewhat annoying extra cost. * Power/effectiveness: 5/5 - I chose the 5,000 BTU because I didnโ€™t want to trip the breakers with a more powerful unit. It works well. We can sleep comfortably and sometimes we even wake up feeling a little chilly, which is nice. Itโ€™s worth noting that this wouldnโ€™t be very effective at cooling a larger space. * Noise: 4.5/5 - It is a little noisy. If you are used to sleeping with a big box fan on high speed, like I am, it is comparable to that. I donโ€™t mind the noise. To be fair I have selective hearing. Giving 5 stars overall because I am not sweaty anymore. ... show more

  • Very Good, Almost Terrific
Size: 5,000 BTU Mechanical Controls
This is a relatively inexpensive, quite light, very low-power window A/C that absolutely gets the job done for a small room. We're using it to cool an under-insulated 100 sq ft, and it has no problem. On it's Low setting, it'll cool the room from Too Hot to Colder Than I Intended in half an hour. It's so light that we installed it in an upper sash instead of the lower sash, and it's no problem. Be aware this is an inexpensive unit, without a calibrated thermostat (you set warmer or cooler, like with a typical fridge, but you can't set a target temperature in degrees) or a remote. Doesn't bother us, but don't be surprised. However, a couple of caveats: First, the installation instructions aren't good. To be fair, I've never seen a window A/C that came with good installation instructions, which is strange because it's not complicated. The trick is to be aware that the side panels should be vertical, with the lip around the edges on the inside of the window and frame. If you have a window anything close to standard, when the side panels are aligned correctly, the A/C is in the right position and tilted at the right angle. You want the foam between where the A/C meets the window and windowsill, to fill in the gaps. That covers the hard part of putting it in correctly. Second, A/Cs like this have a layer of styrofoam dividing the inside from the outside, except for the drainage hole and where tubing goes through. The foam is often in two pieces that meet in the middle. If the foam isn't thick enough or doesn't seal tightly where the pieces meet, you'll get a lot of exterior sound coming in -- and a lot of bugs. This A/C needs thicker foam and a tighter seal. It's not bad, but another 50 cents of styrofoam would vastly improve it. When it's off, it may allow noticeable amounts of hot air in, and you will get noise and may get some bugs. Because the split in the foam is inside, you can't just tape it up yourself. This isn't a huge problem -- I've seen some that are basically bug freeways -- but overall this unit has a nice fit and finish, and it's a shame this one important detail isn't up to the level of the rest. ... show more

  • Great small unit.
Size: 5,000 BTU Mechanical Controls
It was delivered on time, works well, and does a great job cooling our living room. We use it with a circular fan and it cools very well. It gets cold fast on hi cool so we turn it down to low cool before switching to the fan mode. Love it.

  • Good quality unit
Size: 5,000 BTU Mechanical Controls
This is a great little window ac unit. I just put it in. It was easy to put together and mount and works well cooling the room. Good quality and easy to operate. It was a bit heavy for me being a 66 year old woman but I managed. I just took my time and did it one step at a time.

  • Good enough, but not impressive for a name brand unit
Size: 5,000 BTU Mechanical Controls
This is a good enough starter unit for a small room at a somewhat reasonable price, but is definitely not the best AC unit especially given its brand. It's easy to use, but many of the mode options don't seem much different from one another (low cool vs high cool, 4 vs 6 level cold). There's a dial where you can adjust the angle of the air coming out, but that dial is loose plastic so the air just moves the dial after you try to adjust it anyway. It's also fairly loud, louder even than our giant wall-mounted units. Chose this one because Frigidaire is a reputable name, but kind of feel like I could have gotten a cheaper no-name unit that works just as well or even better than this one. ... show more

  • Nice, But Hard to Clean
Size: 5,000 BTU Mechanical Controls
Nice little AC. I LOVE the mechanical dials (instead of digital). No bright lights on it, no automatically turning on in eco mode, no issues with it not coming back on after electric outage. Sometimes, good old fashioned analog dials are the BEST! When it runs, you can hear the variability of running easier than other models I've had before, but I got used to it. The big problem is how HARD it is to clean. The entire front has to come off just to clean the directional elements. I keep this in a 175 sq ft room and it keeps it cool. Depending on how hot it is outside (70s-90s F), the room ranges from 60 - 66 F on high, coldest setting. Our old farmhouse is quite air-leaky, so this little thing does a good job. I do wish, though, that it would still run the AC when it gets cool outside at night, but it doesn't work like that. I can't open the window when it's cool out, especially because at night it's incredibly humid and that would be dangerous for mold growth in the home. So, it would be nice if the AC would still run when it's cool outside, but most all of them do that... ... show more
