🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The LG 8000s air conditioner has received generally positive reviews. Users have appreciated the ease of installation, quiet operation, efficient cooling, and affordable price rate. However, there were some concerns about the initial performance of the compressor and the quality of the instruction manual.

Pros

  • 🌡️ Efficient cooling and energy conservation
  • 🔊 Relatively quiet operation
  • 💲 Affordable pricing
  • 💪 Easy to install

Cons

  • ❄️ In colder temperatures, the compressor does not fire up as frequently
  • 📃 Instruction manual has typos and broken English
  • 🔨 Build quality is reported to be subpar
  • 🌬️ Remote control difficulties because of the top-positioned control panel

Should I Buy It?

On balance, the LG 8000s air conditioner appears to be a worthwhile investment, noted for its efficient cooling and quiet operation. While there are minor drawbacks such as the quality of the instruction manual and initial concerns about the compressor, the affordable price tag and overall satisfactory performance make this a competitive choice in the market of air conditioners.

  • Compact, quiet, and cools the room
Size: 6,000 BTU
Just installed this air conditioner. So far, it's working great. I had to get this model because it required the least window height clearance of any quality conditioner that I can find. My older home has storm windows with high base frames, which are a couple of inches higher than the interior window sill. As a result, I had to raise the height of the interior window sill (3 boards nailed together) nearly 3 inches so that the air conditioner could fit over the storm window base frame. This doesn't leave much clearance room with a double-hung window, and this unit fit...just barely. A few notes: 1. The adhesive strip which applied to the bottom edge of the window is very sticky and very fragile. If you get any bit of it stuck on a fingertip, that part will break off from the main strip. 2. The manual has not been updated to match all features of the unit; e.g., it says that the remote control requires one battery. It requires two. But the main installation instructions of the manual still apply. 3. Make sure that the screws for the side panels are applied so that they're invisible from the inside. 4. The unit no longer comes with a drain . Apparently, newer air conditioner models have dropped this "feature." I'm not worried about this because I live in the relatively non-humid west coast. But if you live in a high-humidity area, you should be sure that the unit tips backward a bit towards the outside so that any excess condensation can drip out the back. 5. The remote control is basic. It would be nicer if it would provide a visual indication of temperature setting, fan setting, etc. 6. My window is about 40 inches wide, which exceeds the 35" expansion of the side panels. I covered the open spaces on each end with a piece of 1" thick Owens-Corning foamular (rigid foam insulation). In fact I filled the entire space between the window frame edge and the air conditioning unit (which completely covers the side panels). Cut the foamular a tiny bit bigger, and you can "force" the foam piece into the space with a little pressure; the foam will thus stay firmly in place and effectively block all the open spaces. If you don't want to buy an entire 4'x8' sheet of the foam, Home Depot sells a 2'x2' square for about $6. If you still have tiny open cracks around the foam, a little piece of masking tape will cover any gaps. 7. With the unit in place, my open lower window almost touches the top of the window frame. This means that there is insufficient room to install the included L-bracket as an added protection to prevent the window from being opened further from the outside (e.g., by an intruder). I simply drilled a hole completely through the front window frame and halfway through the back window frame, and then I pushed a big nail into the hole to prevent movement of the window. 8. Some reviews complained that the unit is too noisy. I, however, feel that it's as quiet as a window unit can possibly be. The compressor makes MUCH less noise than my 14,000 BTU Whynter portable air conditioner, which Good Housekeeping ranked in 2018 as quieter than other units on the market. 9. Outside sounds are now more noticeable when the conditioner is not running. This is unavoidable given since I can no longer close the inside window and the outer storm window. If the sounds of crickets bothers you at night, you're probably out of luck. ... show more

  • GREAT FEATURES AND PERFORMANCE, LOW COST TO RUN.... GREAT FEATURES AND PERFORMANCE, LOW COST TO RUN....
Size: 6,000 BTU
ADDED PIX OF WHITE/BLUE FILTER PERFORMANCE. As you can clearly see, the filter did keep the white mesh factory filter and the evaporator coils SPOTLESSLY CLEAN.. The filter was changed after about 3 months.. EDIT: ADDED ENERGY COSTS FROM TAPO UNITS.. REVISED ENERGY COST FOR JULY = $66.67 FOR HOME AIR CONDITIONING. IMPORTANT: After you receive your AC unit, or ANY refrigeration appliance, it is really mandatory to let the unit sit-UPRIGHT, for at least 6-8 hours, preferably overnight, to permit the Freon and oil in the system to settle “down” in the unit BEFORE you turn it on…. During shipping you do NOT know if the unit was transported on its side, or even upside down, otherwise, you WILL risk damaging the compressor…. My first purchase of the LG LW6017R 6000 BTU unit was in June of 2000 which replaced a 17 YO Kelvinator 5000 BTU unit. I installed this in my kitchen window primarily to use as backup air conditioning when a Florida hurricane takes out the power. The 6000 BTU size is easily powered by my iGEN2500 inverter generator which also keeps the refrigerator, (beer), cold when the power dies. Recently, my home central AC died and since my air handler is in the attic – builder’s dumb design – I did not want to put good money after bad and spend THOUSANDS with replacing the AC system with the air handler in the attic. I just bought and installed two additional 6000 BTU units; one in my bedroom and the other in the living room. My bedroom window opening was 46 inches wide and the supplied “accordion” side panels would not extend wide enough to block the sides of the AC unit. For the living room window, I “could” have used the accordion panels, but, I wanted to make the installation more “permanent” and I cut pieces of wood for the side panels for both the bedroom and living room installs with pictures showing the final installation. As the units have a cheap, plastic air filter, I also added cut pieces of the white/blue filter material, WHITE SIDE OUT - air input, (ASIN B0DHNBGSXV), and with using the hook side of adhesive Velcro strips, I was able to use this white/blue filter material to ensure a proper air filtration that will keep the evaporator coils clean. See pix. The bedroom and kitchen units provide COLD air with the units cycling during the day. The thermocouple meter shows a 45.1 degree output air temp with a 28.1 degree temperature differential, which is GREAT. The living room unit cools a larger area and with recent 97 degree Florida HEAT, this unit’s compressor runs most of the day. In 95-97 degree heat, my three day electric cost @ $0.14/KWH, for ALL THREE UNITS, was only ~$6.00 or about $2.00 per day, (BR=$0.42/DAY, KIT=$0.45/DAY, and LR=$1.13/DAY)…. You can’t beat that with a stick ;-) As air conditioning is really mandatory in Florida, I am happy as a cool clam without breaking the bank. The remotes are IR which lets you remotely adjust settings individually where an RF remote would definitely cause problems in adjusting an individual unit’s settings. Overall, with the features and performance of these LG units, I can totally recommend these units for keeping your cool for minimal cost…. ... show more

  • Decent but loud for a bedroom.
Size: 6,000 BTU
Cooling works well for my office. The quiet operation not so much. Once the compressor is in it has a fairly loud humming noise. Not terrible for an office but I would not want it for a bedroom.

the unit works great. It isnt as loud as I thought it would be. The only thing is the box looked great. and the packing was great but the top outside corner was crushed as if someone dropped it on the floor and then packaged it up. But it runs fine for now.........

  • I made the right choice on this one I made the right choice on this one
Size: 6,000 BTU
Although we have dual unit central A/C on our house, we have a ground-floor guest room that is like a small apartment (about 150 sq') with its own entrance that we rent out through AirBnB. For this summer I decided to give guests their own unit rather than relying solely on the central cooling over which they had no control. We also don't necessarily like running the main unit overnight when we're all upstairs and it's not that hot out. It was tough at the lower price end to find consistently great reviews on any particular brand or model, so I first checked Consumer Reports which rated LG as the best brand overall and I took a shot on this unit which matched what I was hoping to spend. This is a great little air conditioner, and I like that it has 4 distinct modes of operation with a display thermostat rather than just a dial or cool/colder controls. This means that on a really hot day, we can use the "energy saver" mode set to slightly above the household temperature so it only kicks in if the central unit is off or the room is heating up in the afternoon faster than the rest of the house. It uses the latest technology and is quiet enough, with 3 fan speed settings as well. Actually, with paying guests in the room, the hum of the unit creates a nice "white noise" that helps block other sounds of the household. So far all guests have reported being very comfortable, and we have had some very hot days. I installed the unit myself - very easy for any one marginally "handy," although my son helped me lift it into place. Once set up we discovered that the temperature setting and fan speed buttons did not work on the unit itself, but only on the included remote. I called LG directly who had a repairman out the next day, and although we had to wait a week for the part to come in, it is all fixed and working great. I am still giving this product 5 stars because the unit was usable the entire time (using the remote for temperature) and the excellent free warranty service from LG to remedy the situation. (Just needed a quick swap of a small circuit board) Their contract repairman himself was very impressed with the features and operation of this unit - he had not seen this model before, so his comments added to my satisfaction with the purchase. ... show more

  • Having buyers remorse on this purchase.
Size: 6,000 BTU
Update changing from 4 stars to one: The ac has power but does not cool off my room which very small, u can fit three king mattress only on the floor and it would be wall to wall and not able to navigate through ceiling is low and I have a door and one window the window the ac is in and this room is not any cooler than it is without the ac in and on. I have to purchase yet another ac as this one has failed me. It turns on but nothing cool about it. Well first thing I want to add is I had shopped around for air conditioners for about a month online as this is an expensive purchase for me. I had an ac already but it was leaking water indoors and we just could not have that and also on the really hot days it didn't seem to do a great job cooling. So with all that said we needed to buy an ac. I wanted to get 6,000 btu's as I thought that would make a difference but apparently you don't feel a difference between 5,000 btu's and 6,000 btu's and I thought I would feel a difference and between those btu's there is a big price difference of about $70 so having buyers remorse for that reason. The ac isnt as loud as my last one but it is louder than I thought it would be. Another thing is I see Styrofoam in the ac and I was under impression with a gold fin thing that there would not be styrofoam which that is not true. The remote I like as it is simple and buttons are raised. The down side is that it just has mode and up and down and u still have to be at the ac to see which mode it is going to and what the temp is your putting it on. But the remote like I said has raised buttons so my wife without looking or putting on glasses and turning on a light can simple turn the ac on or off. Our last remote was flat with flat buttons and you needed to turn on the lights to see what u was doing but also had a very detailed remote so that you didnt have to walk up to ac to see which mode you were going in. Another thing i dis like is the screen is more at the top and the filter kinda blocks that so you cant see the screen laying down you have to stand up to read the screen. One other thing I cant stand is that the vent thing is only movable side to side and you cant move it up and down and i really wish it had that swivel for movement up and down. I seen a picture that appeared that the vent would move in all directions but once received I was disappointed. The ac is quite small even smaller than my last one and easy to install as it is a simple window unit. I do lobe the dehumidifaction feature as I can set it to dry for those humid or rainy days and on the second floor for some reason it gets very humid up here so putting it on dry is great and still blows really cold air. I don't know that it is or isn't going to leak water on the inside yet as I only ran it for an hour so far just to make sure it works but we are having a cold week where I live so I wont really get to see what it is all about until it gets warm enough to use. Another thing I dont like is after installing the side panels you see an air gap between the top and bottom between panels and ac and they were installed correctly so i will have to put foam here so stink bugs dont have a way in. Will update once I really got some use out of this and plan to purchase a protection plan a protection plan is never a bad idea. As I was nervous reading reviews after I purchased this and tried to cancel this but was shipping within seconds of ordering I received this the next day. So far I don't have the same problems other reviewers have thank goodness. Update: Every 7 days my air conditioner says reset filter and to clean it but it is clean and to get the reset button to go away I have to unplug the ac and do the reset button on the outlet of the ac. ... show more

  • Excellent and Quiet
Size: 6,000 BTU
My pregnant wife and I had our bedroom A/C unit die right before we were going to get three 90+ days in a row. The old one lasted for 15+ years so I immediately started looking up new ones and wondered what new features had been implemented in the last decade and how much quieter our new one would be. My research led me to this LG unit, but it wasn't available in a store anywhere near us and obviously wouldn't be delivered immediately, which was needed. I therefore had to go to a store and pick one up to install. I ended up buying a General Electric unit and installed it immediately. The box mentioned that it was very quiet and cooled efficiently, but we were disappointed. It was very much not quiet (even louder than the 15 year old Maytag that finally gave out) but it did cool the room down pretty well. After the heat wave subsided we decided to order this LG unit, install it and see if it was the same story. Well - it's not. This unit is excellent! It cools the room down even better than the other one and it is much, much quieter. We haven't had it long enough to compare energy efficiency or electricity usage, but I can tell you that it's efficient. When it kicks on, there's no rattling or sudden loud increase in volume. We set it on to fan speed 2 (out of 3) and 68 degrees and it was frigid in the bedroom (about 200 sq feet) within an hour or so. I'm pretty sure the dog moved where he was laying in the middle of the night to the other side of the bed because his usual spot is too much in front of the direct blow. We returned the other unit the same day this one arrived. I would absolutely recommend this A/C unit to anyone that has a moderately sized room to cool and doesn't want to turn the volume on the TV up three times its usual level while they're cooling off. I think this could easily cool off a room of 250-300 square feet, maybe even a little larger. ... show more

  • Cheap but loud
Size: 6,000 BTU
This is an affordable option for a window AC, and it will effectively cool a small space, but it is loud (52 db on the lowest setting is not quiet!) and the thermostat is not very accurate. It keeps cooling beyond the temperature you set it to and rarely turns off on its own. I unfortunately will be purchasing a more expensive (and hopefully higher quality) AC for my bedroom in hopes of a quieter and more efficient model. ... show more
