SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY WITH A SMIDGEN OF HOMICIDE USA Today Bestselling author Tonya Kappes brings you southern and quirky characters in her mystery series. Her stories are charged with humor, friendship, family and life in small southern towns.Welcome to Normal, Kentucky where NOTHING is normal. It's Labor Day weekend in Normal, and if you know anything about camping and RVing, you know it's one of the busiest times of the year. Unfortunately, Daniel Boone National Park is in danger of being closed due to a drought and local businesses are scrambling for ideas to survive a possible shutdown. Happy Trails Campground is at the center of a murder in which campers as well locals are suspects. It looks likely that a local resident is responsible for the dastardly deed since the victim is the one person who had the power to shut down the national park, which would be devastating to Normal’s small businesses. Follow Mae West as she searches for clues to get to the bottom of this Labor Day campground caper! Read more

  • A Very Entertaining Read!
Dollycas’s Thoughts We are back at the Happy Trails Campground in Normal Kentucky for the Labor Day weekend. Campground owner Mae West has a lot on her plate with the campground fully booked and her little dog Fifi due to give birth to three puppies any day. She is also worried about the drought in the area that could shut down her camp and other local businesses. Her romantic life is in flux too. Mae’s current guests include some rowdy men celebrating the long weekend with a bachelor party. The groom, William gets into an argument with Ranger Corbin Ashbrook. The bachelors are warned if they cause any more trouble she will boot them from the campground. The next morning William is missing and Ranger Corbin Ashbrook is dead. Mae knows another murder is bad for business so she starts her own little investigation to get things back to as normal as things in Normal can be as quickly as she can. I am enjoying the characters in this series so much. Each is unique in their own way and very cleverly written. I love the way Mae has become close with so many people and that she has grown comfortable running the campground even though she still has things to learn like how to keep her business going in times when a drought strikes. The Laundry Club members are quite a group. Gossip, information, book clubs, and more, these ladies are a hoot. They have also become great friends to Mae. So we have a missing groom and a dead ranger. There has to be a connection, right? Ms. Kappes has tangled things up in a terrific way that keeps both readers and Mae on their toes. Throw in another murder, pick up the pace, throw in some twists and turns, a rumor or two, and the author takes her readers on one heck of a trip. I did figure most of the mystery before all was revealed but with the quirky characters in Normal that did not deter my enjoyment of this story. I was excited to see the pups be born and what was going to happen with Mae’s romantic life and if she was going to actually go to her hair appointment and how that would turn out. All the subplots meshed so nicely with the mystery. There is always something happening at Happy Trails Campground and Ms. Kappes takes the time to give us detailed accounts so we feel we are right there on the scene. Whether it be out on a hiking trail or at the birth of Fifi’s puppies, at other campground events, or when there is a shocking discovery, all was easily crystal clear in my mind. Forests, Fishing, & Forgery is just the 4th installment of what is now a 33-book series. It will take me quite some time to get caught up but each visit to Normal Kentucky has been fun and entertaining. I hope I get to visit again soon. ... show more

  • A Funny Read
In this third book of the series it is Labor Day in Normal, Kentucky and things are going wonderfully for Mae at the Happy Trails Campground. They are booked solid and Mae has become comfortable in the new life she has made for herself. Her dog is pregnant and should be having puppies soon, she has two men who are both interested in her, and friendships are strong. When a bachelor party group arrives and starts to become rowdy Mae hopes that she can keep them under control, hopefully keeping them from running off other guests. When the groom ends up going missing Mae knows that she has to look into his disappearance and quickly find out where he is otherwise it could hurt the campgrounds. While out looking for the man she ends up finding the dead body of a local forest ranger who had been out searching earlier in the day. Was the forest ranger murder and if so why and where is the missing groom? These are the answers that Mae is searching for. When the groom is found dead and another person connected to the ranger dies Mae becomes intent on finding the answers that she so desperately needs. Follow along as Mae runs her business, tries to go out on a couple of dates, and delves into the deaths happening around her. This is such a readable series filled with a cast of fun characters and a location that I wouldn't mind visiting. I look forward to seeing what Mae gets into next. ... show more

Search parties are sent out to look for him. Mae and Ty go for a hike and to look for William. Mae finds Ranger Corbin dead just off the trail. Mae ends getting involved with solving Corbin's death and William's disappearance. Good story and characters, had trouble finding a stopping point at 2am, 3 am etc ... show more

  • Great cozy in the outdoors
This is the 3rd book in the series and while a standalone there is some history among characters that make it a better read if you read others first. Mae is caught in the middle of strange occurrences again. This time Happy Trails is missing a camper and a ranger is acting out of character. There is some local nepotism and shenanigans going on in Normal and Mae isn’t certain if this is what’s at the center of the 2 sudden deaths of locals associated with the National Forest. The mystery twists and turns as does Mae’s personal life. There’s a drought starting which seems to come along quite suddenly which felt a little forced to me But not being familiar with the terrain this could be feasible and not just a plot stretch. This and a few plot line inconsistencies are why i didn’t give it 4 stars. All in all a fun book in an entertaining series ... show more

  • keeps you guessing
This was my favorite camping book so far! Lots of twists and turns, and the main plot didn’t play out until the very end. There was also love triangles and pregnant Fifi to fill in any blanks. I read it through- even at work!
