I could not build one of these for the price. The size is just right. It is large enough for all the filter media you would need and I can easily fit my hand all the way down to the bottom. The media rack seams a little thin but I don't think that will be a problem. The return pump seams like just enough but it has a steel impeller shaft. I would have preferd ceramic. If you install this with the magnet in a 40b tank, the media basket will be hard to get out as it hits the rim. I installed mine with a bead of silicone between it and the glass and let it dry under its own weight. This gave me just enough clearance to solve this issue but now it's installed more permanently. It is shorter that my aqueon 40b so when I silicone this in, I had to leave a gap under it of about 1" to 1 1/2" which will be filled in/covered by substrate. Detritus trap??? We'll see? These minor issues is why I took off a star but over all, I'm happy and would purchase again! ... show more

I made my axolotl tank AIO with this and really wish I had done this sooner. I had done the tank previously AIO but I had made the back the filter. Well tragedy struck and the tank had cracked and I had planned on taking out the sump I made and re-using it, but after thinking about it, I decided to go this route. I could take the drop in kit out and easily put it in another tank if I wanted. There is a gap, but if it was any bigger, you would not get it in due to the trim on the inside. So I found some 1/2 black foam sheets, cut them to fit the gap snuggly. It keeps the kit from shifting or floating and it is very secure. I also used a thin foam pad for a rimless tank, placing it underneath the kit inside the tank. I should have cut out that foam to size and siliconed it to bottom prior to putting in tank, was a little difficult trying to get all the foam in place and that shifted a lot. ... show more
