I live in North Dallas. The soil here is clay. Not soft clay. Not the fun kind you make a pot with. This is the kind of clay that laughs at shovels. This is the kind of clay that eats shovels for breakfast and asks for seconds. I wanted to put up a post in my backyard. The post holds lights. The lights make my yard look nice. To put up a post, you need a hole. To dig a hole, you need muscle. I do not have muscle. I have arms. They are technically arms. They hang off my shoulders and do arm things sometimes. But they are not strong arms. I do not dig holes for a living. I sit. I type. My arms are for typing. So I bought this auger. I had a dream. In the dream, I pulled the cord. The engine roared. The auger touched the ground. The ground opened up like it was scared. Dirt flew everywhere. Neighbors cheered. A hole appeared in three seconds flat. I stood there like a hero. Maybe I flexed. Maybe I got a medal. That is not what happened. Here is what happened. I pulled the cord. The engine started, which was nice. It sounded serious. It sounded like it meant business. I lowered it to the clay. And then the auger looked at the clay. And the clay looked at the auger. And they had a long, quiet conversation. And nothing much moved. It digs. I want to be fair. It does dig. It is better than me with a shovel. But it is only a little better than me with a shovel. It is the kind of better where I still ended up sweating, grunting, and questioning my life. I leaned on it. I pushed. I bounced up and down on it like a sad kid on a pogo stick. It went down slow. Very slow. Grind, grind, grind. Then it hit clay again and thought about it some more. I do not blame the machine entirely. North Dallas clay is a worthy opponent. It has been here longer than me. It has beaten better arms than mine. But I was promised power. I was promised speed. I got a machine that is roughly as fast as an angry man with a stick. The build seems fine. It held together. It did not fall apart. It started every time, which counts for something. The 6 inch bit is a good size for a post hole. If your dirt is soft, I bet this thing flies. If you live somewhere with normal dirt, dirt that behaves, you will probably love it. But if you live where I live, come in with lower hopes. This is not a hole vending machine. This is a tool that helps a weak man dig a hole slightly less slowly. I did get my hole. Eventually.
