  • canister filter
Beautiful run great but the intake could be a little bigger for the size of the filter
Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2024 by I love everything I get from you guys I just wish that they made a basking area like the black basking area for the 55gallion tank I wish they would make one for the 60gallion

  • Didn't work. Bad experience
This thing literally did not work. It turned on, but the water wasn't filtering in. I followed the steps that came with the video, and nothing worked. I even looked up different ways ppl have setup or used their canisters, still nothing. After 4 days of trying, I just decided to return it and get my money back. Maybe mine was just faulty, but I wouldn't recommend. Good 4 you if it worked, bc it didn't work for me. Wasteful ... show more

  • So far so good
Just received it today and so far so good ... Goes to show not everything has to have a fancy name attached to it to do the job .... Lots of layers of filtration and bio media as well and a good strong pump ... What more could you ask for. And mind you I am a hardcore fish person. ... Lots of tanks in my home so I know what works and doesn't ... show more

  • Good for the price, but not much flexibility for media.
This has sort of an odd design. It's a traditional canister filter model, but its basically just a canister, full of layers of different types of foam, and a powerhead type pump with a cord that literally just goes through the top and into the canister, cord and all. The bottom layer of foam is then just cutout to make room for the pump. It does come with some ceramic ball media, but there is no basket to put it in, so you would just have to take a layer of foam out and put the balls there instead. The balls are very dusty upon delivery also, so make sure to wash them prior to using to get some dust off. So far the filter works well, but I'm a bit concerned about the longevity of it, and cleaning all the foam pads inside is not the easiest. For the price, it's a pretty good filter though. ... show more

  • Super Strong value cannister filter for the DIY'er
I really like this value priced cannister filter. You literally get a filter that performs similar to filters that cost two to four times or more. Of course they do it by eliminating some of the features you will find on other filters. But those features only add convenience and not more raw filtering capability. I currently own 4 tanks, one with a Penn Plax Cascade Elite 1500, and one with an Eheim Professional II . Plus I've owned Fluval, and Supreme Aquamaster filters in the past. So I've used many cannister filters. How this maker achieves this is kind of clever. They take a standard submersible water pump and fit it to their cannister and voila, they have a higher output setup, minus some conveniences. This is instead of a purpose built pump that is usually placed into the lid, they just simply place a submersible high output pump inside the cannister, which frankly makes it easier to access the pump motor for cleaning. Now for the downside of doing it that way. First, the cannister is a bit harder to assemble versus other cannister filters. The filter media fits on top of the pump inside the cannister. You need to do this while aligning a plastic tube that connects the pump to the external water hose connection on the lid. This can be a bit tricky, but with a little care, it's not too hard to do. The included filter media is decent, and can easily be replaced by anyone comfortable with making their own. However, the media should last some time before needing replacement. Finding pre-made replacements in the future is questionable, but for a DIY'er, this really doesn't pose too big of a problem. Also ditto with the pump. Since they use a standard type of submersible pump, I believe one probably could be sourced and made to fit the cannister if needed. BUT, that's getting a bit too far ahead. The reality is the parts should last for some time, as the pump seems to be of a good build quality. The final drawback is the need to fill the cannister fully with water prior to starting the pump. Other filters have some sort of syphon feature usually built into the lid to aid in drawing water down into the cannister before startup. This one you manually have to fill it up. While that is a small inconvenience, the plus side is you have one less part that can fail, so it actually makes for a more secure and reliable filter. Also the overall quality of the hoses and fittings are of a lesser build than the more expensive alternatives. BUT, they work fine, and with a little care should be good for the life of the filter. Other reviewers mentioned that the Bio Balls came with nothing to contain them. Again, that is one of the ways they kept costs down. For myself, not a big deal as I already have some re-useable filter bags with zippers which can be found here on Amazon. See last pic. Regarding the Bio balls, I was able to squeeze a bag full in between the included media without removing any of the inserts as stated in the manual. I'm probably reducing the flow a bit by smashing it all together, but it still has more output than my Eheim, but not as much as the Cascade Elite 1500. Still that is either due to the rating being a bit too high, or my reducing the flow with the extra media. Either way, you get a decent higher output filter for a steal. As long as you are comfortable dealing with the above limitations, you'll find this to be a strong value priced filter. If convenience is most important, there are plenty of options elsewhere. Personally, a little inconvenience is not a deal breaker. In reality, I use filters much larger than needed, so I don't have to constantly be taking my filter apart, so how much convenience am I giving up anyways ? And finally , other reviews mentioned the dusty parts, Really ? Rinsing out all of the filter parts is ALWAYS a necessity, so why is this even an issue ? To sum up (Finally) , what you end up with is a strong filter for a LOT LESS than traditional cannister filters. It's a great low cost alternative to those who don't mind less features, and are more concerned with actual filtering performance. Anyone can build a filter if price is no object. The trick is doing it for less. I think they hit on a good balance with this filter. ... show more
