Install is easy with basic tools. Gate is very sturdy and stays latched. Much more kid proof (at being opened) than many other gates. Only con is they tend to get “saggy” over time, but it doesn’t seem to effect how well it works.

I first purchased this gate over 14 years ago for my children. We had no problems with this gate until my MIL fell and broke her fall by grabbing onto the gate when it was open. The gate still functioned but she broke out a few slats and my little pups could fit through. I luckily found the same gate and it took 3 seconds to install. The hardware was the same and the new gate just slipped right in!! I was thrilled! This gate gets used multiple times a day as my teen's room is in the basement. Dogs are not allowed downstairs. Installation was pretty easy. Hardware is nice and solid. I didn't add the swing limiter because I like having it go either way. Easy to remove the gate for a completely clear path so long as you unlatch it first (so you don't have to worry about someone accidentally unmounting it, unless they pull UP when they swing it). The latch itself can be a little tricky or finicky, and it WILL pinch if your finger gets in there (blood blister to prove it). Live and learn, though. I really like not having a threshold so that I can vacuum under it and not trip when walking through. ... show more

I have mixed review on this gate. It is easy to install, just ensure you use long screws to at least screw into a stud on the wall. The gate is easy to remove by unlatching and just lifting up and collapses to swing out of the way. You may need to put a rubber door knob stopper so it does not damage the wall it folds against. This gate replaced one just like it but a little shorter due to dogs playing and a slat broke—lasted 18 years with kids and dogs so fairly good life. Now we mostly use it to keep dogs upstairs when company comes over. Big dogs—65 to95lbs. The dogs poke at it but for most part leave it alone. Main concern I have is doubt it will support child for very long or dog pouncing on it. Also if slat breaks it could create a impaling hazard such to a dog/child that may try to squeeze out of a broken slat with a sharp half a slat sticking up. I wish this came in a aluminum lightweight version. I tried a metal one but my top of stair opening is not perfectly square so this enables the gate to pivot on hinges and align to the latch. Latch is easy to use with one hand and quick. Also metal ones seem to have plastic latches or just hard to open with one hand. Ensure you account for height of gate, baseboard height and if there is a handrail obstruction, wall stud locations, for the install. Gate can swing in both directions or you can install included gate stopper. One install tip is you may want to use a small thin piece of plywood behind the hinges so the bracket does not dig into the drywall and damage like my last one did. Use the included template for mounting brackets and a level to ensure template is perpendicular. I installed hinges first, mounted gate then put latches on gate to ensure I drilled holes in the right location and put level on top of gate since gate when loose will sage a bit off level. Thus when you latch gate you have to lift up slightly and then will look level when latched. Good functional and easy to use gate and needs a metal version. It appears wood is a clear pine and could be stained/painted if desired. ... show more

Installation was tricky, but only because if the configuration of woodwork on my stairway. The directions are very helpful. The top closure can be tricky at first but is easy to learn. I have had a daycare for 7 years. This is the 3rd gate I have ordered. The first two withstood the daycare kids, but lost the fight against our dogs. They didn’t like being locked up when we left the house. Barring another dog attack, I expect this one to last another 6 years, at least. ... show more

We tried multiple gates including the pressure based ones, and this is my favorite. The pressure based gates are misleading. Most say they can be used on the top of the stairs, and they can, but they shouldn’t unless you screw them into the wall. There’s no way to avoid having holes in your walls on the top of stairs if you want to be safe. The advantages of this gate over most others are 1) it opens to the full width of the hallway/stairway (minus an inch or two for hinge and latch) - others is much smaller and hard to get through when carrying things 2) you can very easily pop it out if it’s in your way and your child/dog isn’t around 3) there’s no trip hazard that comes with the pressure based gates I don’t know why people say the latch is difficult to open. The first time it takes a second to figure it out, but after that, it’s very easy to open with one hand. ... show more
