Got the 4x4x4 LED cube and it's a real eye-catcher. Took me about 3 hours to assemble it. Instructions were pretty decent; not perfect, but far better than the usual poorly written Chinese pamphlet. Note that the instructions only tell you how to assemble the cube, and has absolutely nothing regarding what the functions/features are or how to use them. For example: what is "combined animation" and how is it used? The LEDs are very bright, and the assortment of animations keeps it interesting. The four LEDs at the bottom rotate between all seven colors, but the 4x4x4 grid seems to only give me 2-3 colors, regardless of the animation selected. I don't know if the animations can be edited or loaded. All in all, for $16 it's a cute basic little light show/soldering exercise. Too bad it doesn't do more. ... show more

    • Neat idea, didn't turn out so well though
Bought this for my 12 year old son and he has a very basic knowledge of soldering. When it came in the mail, he jumped on it and started soldering it together. When he was "finished", it didn't work. I think he over-soldered stuff. I don't recommended for beginners unless you are there to supervise or your kid will actually read the instructions. It should be easy but I think he just got excited and screwed it all up. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. I didn't realize this type of LED existed. As I assembled it I wasn't expecting much. Way better than I expected. I hung mine upside down in a mold and poured epoxy resin with color dyes and it's pretty awesome.

    • Colors aren’t working.
Kits done all the led’s work. But the animations aren’t working properly reds are weak on most samples.

    • Patience is the key.
Challenging but rewarded with a attention getting device. Instructions were above average for a chinese translation, but I learned some tricks through trying different assembly methods. Looking at the bottom of the LED, make sure the leads are horizontal to each other with the anode(shorter) to the left of the cathode(longer). Bend the anode up right at the LED body. Use a needle nose pliers and hold the cathode such that the width of the pliers is between the LED body and the widened tab on the cathode. Bend the cathode over the needle nose pliers so it is horizontal and forms a 90 degree angle with the bent anode. I only added one LED to the acrylic jig at a time, soldering each anode to the previous LED. I would adjust the cathodes so they all were parallel to the jig before removing each row of four LEDs from the jig. After all four rows of four LEDs with anodes soldered, I would put all four rows in the jig and solder the cathodes together. I placed the first 4x4 grid where two of the leads touch the bottom of the STC chip. I soldered the two inner cathodes from the "top" side of the board with only the IR sensor. This determined the height for the other 4x4 LEDs. A third hand helper device was used to position each of the other three 4x4 LEDs. ... show more

Very cool little gadget for the money! I especially love the unique color changing LED's. The instructions were pretty good (not great, but did the job), and it came with extra LED's. There are a couple of dead cells (Swapped the LED and they still don't light up), but I could have poorly soldered on the multiplexer. That's life. Still worth the money. ... show more

This is a very neat small project. If you are considering assembling an 8x8x8 project, do this one first. If you feel the assembly is meditative and not tedious, then move up to the 8x8x8.
