Initial observations: Good rugged appearance. Simple to use, intuitive knobs and buttons. I plugged in the battery, turned it on, tuned in a few AM and FM stations with no problems, switched to the NOAA band and verified that I could receive my local station with no problems. I tried out the flashlight and hand crank. I then cranked it for a few minutes to verify that the charging does work with the hand crank. I have not tried the tiny solar panel yet. Since it was displaying 2 out of 3 bars on the battery, I attached the included mini-B USB cable to a nearby charger and let it charge for a few hours. When I returned, it displayed full bars. I have not tested the runtime yet. Radio sensitivity seems fine, but I haven't tested any far away radio stations yet. Purchased 10-2023. The battery shows a mfg date of 2021. I noted that this can be charged by hand crank, solar panel, or USB only. If I interpreted the instructions correctly, it can also run the radio when the USB is plugged into an external source of power if the battery is dead. The radio is supposed to run for four minutes for every 1 minute of cranking. Downsides: The instruction manual is pretty sparse and a bit poorly written. They valued style over substance, and the print is extremely tiny. The battery uses a proprietary connector. It will require some soldering or cutting and crimping when it's time to replace it. (The battery is a single standard 18650 rechargeable.) This version of the radio lost a feature that I liked on the earlier radios. It no longer takes AA/AAA batteries as a backup in case the internal rechargeable battery fails. I consider that to be its largest shortcoming. For an emergency radio, you want to be able to run off of any source of power available. However, many people carry a USB power bank and it will run off of one of those for a good long while. It would have been nice if it had a standard 12V charging port (such as a 5521 jack) and a "wall wart" 110V adapter and a 12V cigarette lighter adapter to charge it. You can use the included USB cord, but they did not include the adapters to run it from your car or your home's 110V. We all have those things around, so no big deal. They've simplified the design and made it a bit cheaper, but the reliance on rechargeable batteries and USB is a bit unsettling for an emergency radio that won't get used much. For something like this that would be put into an emergency kit and not touched for years at a time, putting some AA/AAA lithium batteries in the box and forgetting about it would be fine. Instead, according to the instructions, you have to charge it every 3 months, or the battery life will be lessened. My plan is to leave it in a sunny location so that it will trickle charge on the solar panels. It would have been helpful to include a place to put the USB charging cable, since it is an uncommon USB Mini B (not Micro B). I will have to find a carrying case for it so that the cable doesn't get lost. Total fail on the part of the mfg... why did they make the jack the oddball size of USB Mini B? That hasn't been a standard in probably over a decade. Why not USB C? All in all, pretty solid so far. I am not detracting from the score for these shortcomings. ... show more

Over view: Out of the box - you get the Main unit, USB - micro cable, carry strap, unconnected 18650 Cell. They shrink wrap it with laser printed details. These detail would indicate that the cell is an ICR 18650-26F, but I highly doubt it. They cover the terminals as well to hide the identity of the cell actually being used. IMO, this is a red flag regarding the power source. Operation - Honestly, the manual is not needed for this, it is very intuitive as far as the operation is concerned. Band Selector - Touchy, easy to skip over the band you want, softer touch required for selection. AM - My local broadcast channels came in clearly, and easy to tune to, Sound quality good, Volume range good. FM - My local broadcast channels came in clearly, and easy to tune to, Sound quality good, Volume range good. WB - My local broadcast came in clearly, and easy to tune to, Sound quality good, Volume range good. Flash Light - Good for emergency needs, but not much after that. Flashing Beacon - Honestly, they should have left this off as a feature. There is no chance in hell a rescuer will see this and know someone is in trouble, especially from any great distance. Phone charging - This is a sells point item, not really functional. I mean, 4 minutes of cranking for 1 minute of talk time. I cranked on this thing for 10 min just to try it, and unless things are really desperate, you will not be charging your phone with this. Honestly your best option for charging your phone with this would be via solar charging, and the output of the solar cells on this means it will take one hell of a long time to charge up a phone. But at least you won't be cranking on it. Controls - Easy to access and operate, the back lighting of each button on the top is very helpful. Wish the back light included the forward facing buttons. In the dark you will have to feel around to turn the unit on. Back Light - Very Bright, and makes everything very easy to read. Speaker - Gets the job done. But don't expect to be jamming out with it. Construction - Seems to be durable, and is attractive. I wouldn't drop it though. Manual: Overall you basic manual and mostly good. However, the setup of the clock instructions are wrong. The manual says to "Press and Hold" the set button until the display flashes. This is incorrect. Double click activates the setup function. IMO, you don't get something like this wrong on your own Company branded unit. If you do not know how your own unit functions, then it more than likely isn't an ETON product, but one that just has their logo on it. How Sad, and very misleading. Final Verdict: I just got mine this week, and really haven't put it through the paces, but honestly it performs all the basic functions you will need in an emergency situation. I wished I would have had this when the Tornado of 2015 hit my neighborhood and the power was out for 8 days. Recommendation - Good Buy! ... show more

This is a great, well thought out emergency radio. It is a bit on the complicated side, with many options, so definitely read the manual and keep the manual with the radio for future reference. The only issue is the battery. It's a rechargeable lith-ion. This radio should come with the option to use regular batteries!!! In an emergency situation, these could be easily sourced. Plus you'll need to remember to charge up the battery every 3 months or so to maintain it's health. Kind of a PITA. Otherwise a seemingly well-built, well laid out radio with plenty of options. ... show more

THE GOOD NEWS The Eton FRX3+ is one handsome charger, about 6x8x2” - and rival chargers don’t come close for aesthetics. Since it has a radio with good, clear monaural reception, there’s a good chance the device will be usable aside from emergencies. Solar charging works well, albeit a bit slowly, but the crank will fill up the charge in minutes; I like how the solar charge kicks in automatically. The six emergency bands will keep you informed. This device is very simple to use. THE NOT SO GOOD NEWS The emergency light and warning beacon are both VERY weak; a good flashlight will do a much better job. Moreover, the supplied charging port fits loosely; you’ll have to prop the unit against a secure surface to assure a good charge. THE VERDICT An emergency radio like the Eton FRX3+ works capably, all in all. In emergency situations, I think it’s best to use your own devices (a flashlight, audiobook reader, tablet, portable computer) as much as possible, keep them charged, and load them up with media (like audio books, ebooks, courses, etc.). This review is for the FR1 MODEL. (I also have an FRX3, which I reviewed in October 2019. Amz. is confusing this new review with my other product review. PLUS: The FR1 is well-made and easy to operate. Radio stations come in reasonably well. Most controls are logical, though there are no controls to set the CLOCK. MINUS: The clock must be set by pressing a secret combination of other buttons. This is in the manual, but many folks will not have the manual in the future when they suddenly need it. PLUS: The FR1 is nice and compact; can stuff it in the car almost anywhere. Trunk, glove box, tool bag, etc. MINUS: The biggest DRAWBACK of this FR1 set is that the rechargeable battery cannot be removed. I assume that means the entire radio goes to the "electronic waste" dump when the battery no longer holds a charge. On the FRX3, the rechargeable battery IS accessible and can be replaced, assuming you can find the correct battery size. ... show more
