    • Nice quality and a great value
I picked these up on a lightning deal during Black Friday, Cyber Monday, I don't remember exactly, sometime during that time period. In the pictures it looks like they might be metal, but they are actually made of plastic or as the cell phone manufacturers say these days polycarbonate. They feel very durable, although I don't know if they will tolerate being dropped on a hard surface. The exterior will probably be fine, but there are a lot of internal parts with those LED lights inside. One thing I noticed is I'm not sure if the batter compartment (or the lights themselves) are sealed to be water tight. As expected, Amazon got them here quickly and in great shape. These things are bright. Much brighter than, for example, the Black Diamond lantern I have that uses AA batteries. They are also fairly large, which for my purposes is just fine. There are other options out there that are more portable, but these throw out enough light for a campsite, which is nice. They run fine on Eneloop batteries. I don't have an estimate on run-time yet. The biggest drawback that I see is that they are not adjustable in terms of power. You turn it on by pulling up and out of the base, exposing the LED lights. You can dim the lantern by pushing it further into the base, but that doesn't save you any power because all the LEDs are still lit. Sometimes, you don't need quite that much light, and having some sort of dimmer or power adjustment would allow it to operate much longer if you choose. Overall, great value for the money spent. If they could come up with a version with a dimmer or perhaps lights up fewer of the LEDs and maybe seal the battery compartment, those would be the only improvements I could ask for. ... show more

Why would anyone use a candle anymore in a power outage? Just buy these lanterns they light up the whole room. Great for power outages, camping, and tracking down things that go bump in the night!

Lights up small areas well. Because it disperses light in all directions, it's not as powerful as a flashlight. But the light is adequate, especially given the price (two for $15).
