The media could not be loaded. I have been piddling around with espresso machines for about 10 years. While I have Moka pots, drip coffee makers, Keurig and Nespresso pods for ease of use and a quick cup of Joe, sometimes I like to mix it up with a nice shot of espresso or some type of macchiato as time permits. I had a DeLonghi EC155 many years ago and this is a slightly updated version of the same type of machine. This machine is equipped with a pressurized portafilter with single and double shot screens. The single screen is tucked inside one of styrofoam pads in the box, so make sure you grab it before disposing of the styrofoam! The screens have a little metal bump that slides securely a notch in the portafilter so that when you knock the puck out, the screen stays in place. This is a 20 bar machine with steaming wand, so all in one machine (other than grinder for beans). This machine pre-infuses the puck with water for a few seconds before pushing the hot water through the puck. This is a nice feature that I've not used before, as in theory this helps wet the puck and prepare a more uniform path for the water to flow evenly through the grinds for a consistent pull of espresso. The beauty of a pressurized portafilter is that it pretty much takes some of skill out of making a nice shot of espresso as opposed to a "naked" portafilter where your grind and puck build is everything and is a long learning process in consistency. The final product is a nice shot of espresso with good crema at a discharge temp of about 175 deg F. Just keep in mind that "smoothness" of the shot is going to be highly dependent on beans, roast, and grind. if you go down the rabbit hole of chasing a really great homemade espresso, you will need to invest in a conical burr grinder that is at least equally expensive if not more expensive than this machine. With that being said, I have no complaints with this espresso machine. If you have good beans and grinder, this makes a pretty good shot. Excuse the fact that my pull is uneven between the two ports in the video, I did not do a good job of mixing and tamping my puck ahead of time. Even with the crappy puck I made, the pressurized portafilter did a great job of compensating and the shot still tasted great. It's really nice to have a gauge and the pre-infusion is a nice benefit!

HYPES: A 20-bar espresso machine made of stainless steel and black plastic materials, featuring a frother and a mug warmer. LIKES: The water tank is generously sized for a compact maker. The available 20 bars of pressure makes a surprisingly great espresso and still has the energy for a good froth. STRIKES: This class of espresso machine predictably can take a bit longer to warm up, but this one is impressively short-timed compared to its peers. ADVICE: This espresso maker is a great way to step in to the home barista experience.

As a complete beginner with espresso machines, I found this one incredibly easy to use. It’s straightforward to set up and operate, making it beginner-friendly. For those concerned about tamping pressure affecting the flavor, my experiments with different techniques all resulted in delicious coffee, free of over-extracted bitterness. The flavor variations were noticeable but enjoyable. So far, I’m very satisfied with this machine—it’s an excellent choice for anyone new to making espresso.

I didn’t realize how useful having the measurements visible would be until I started using this one. It’s great to not have to dirty a measuring cup in order to start with the right amount of milk, and it’s helpful to know when the volume has doubled when frothing. The pitcher handle stays cool in use and cleans up easily. The 12oz size is nice for making a single Latte or 2 cappuccinos.
