  • Wonderful Radar Detector!
Style: MAX360 MKII Pattern: Radar Detector
Admittedly what you're about to read is also mostly what I wrote for the Escort MAX 360c MKII, i.e. the version that has wireless. You see, I bought *this* one first, and then I found that I actually wanted the wireless, and plus I thought the grey/black shell matched my interior better, so I gave the non-wireless version to my wife and kept the wireless one for myself. Maybe I'm selfish, but oh well. Okay, that said, here's the rest of the review, slightly edited for the non-wireless version that has a slightly different aesthetic. I love this radar detector. I'm coming from an Escort 9500IX, which was about 10 years old and gave me false alerts all the time since more and more cars now use radar for alerts, alarms, and self-driving. So I wanted something that was updated, gave me lots of options, and was easy to use. The Escort MAX 360 MKII Laser Radar Detector fits that description perfectly. So far nearly every time it's alerted me to active radar, I've seen law enforcement nearby. I'm sure there are sometimes when they're just very well hidden and I don't see them, but I haven't had a single obvious false alert yet. It used to be the case that I'd know if I was close to a Honda or Acura, but I don't have to worry about that any longer. No more false alerts, and I can be confident that it's picking up legitimate signals. I also like a lot of the different user options. I won't go into all of them here, but it's very robust in the amount of options you have in terms of detectable signals, when to alert you to overspeeding or other alerts, and display options. I do which I could remove the mph and speed limit readings, but to remove those it then gives you a voltage reading, which I care about even less than those. So there are a ton of options. This version doesn't have WiFi installed, but it does have Bluetooth, so it connects to your phone easily, and you can do updates via your PC, which is seemingly infinitely faster than the WiFi anyway. So really you're not missing out on a ton by going with the non-WiFi version, and you'll save some cash. I don't use the Drive Smarter app. To be honest, I find it an annoyingly subpar verison of Waze, which, in my opinion, is inferior to what Google Maps has become and Apple Maps hopes to be. I would much prefer if there was some way to integrate the reporting functionality of this app with Google Maps or another mapping app, as I just prefer the display options those apps have over Drive Smarter. But that's just personal preference. I want to make one other note, too: this radar detector is pretty hefty in terms of size. It's not overly huge, but it's way bigger than my 9500IX was. But what was really nice about this radar detector is the aesthetic. The display has several color options, and I really like the blue. The outer case of this one is a sort of navy blue, so just know that going into it if you think it might clash with your interior (if that's important to you). If it does, then you might consider the WiFi (MAX 360c) version instead, which has a grey/black shell. ... show more

  • The best one out there right now, but prepare to pay up!
Style: MAX360 Pattern: Radar Detector
Scoot over Valentine One, there's a new Sheriff in town and thanks to arrows on the new Escort Max 360, we know what direction he's coming from now. I have been loyal to Escort lroducts because they make high quality products I'm happy with their customer service when I've had a problem. I upgraded from the Escort 9500ix and before that I owned the X50. the 9500ix was a great detector for its time but it has since been retired, because it's lost its reliability to accurately notify you of the more modern threats. With door openers and motion detectors, active cruise control systems and the the plethora of interference the 9500ix won't shut up. Sometimes I wonder if it should be renamed to GM SUV detector instead. I bought the Max 360 for the sole purpose of the GPS lockout enhancements. I live on a corner lot and there is a speed sign operating on the Kband frequency about 2 blocks down the road, and every time I started my car the 9500ix would sound off every time, for about 45 seconds to a minute until the device booted up and the GPS filters came online. With the Max 360 this is no longer an issue, as soon as the device powers up the display shows the filtered Kband frequency (displayed grayed out) but is now silent! The Max 360 puts you back in the game with upgraded DSP and dual antennae, directional arrows are a Godsend, there is a ton of customization options. I love that I can change the display color to Match my dash lights, and I love the look of the scanning bar on the colorful OLED display. Range detection has doubled for me compared to my 9500ix while false alarms are still there but are very quickly processed and silenced. I've had this detector for about 4 months now and you can easily tell when it's a real threat. A typical false alert is on K band where a quick chirp, a single bar shows then in 2 or 3 seconds it disappears and goes back on to scanning mode. Changing settings is a breeze but to truly manage the Max 360 and see all of the settings I recommend downloading the Escort live App and using that to tweak it.Don't however use it for navigation , use Waze instead. Waze is far more powerful with its millions of users comparef to inly thousands on Escort live. As far as range goes, I can detect that speed sign I previously mentioned from 2 1/2 miles away with the Max 360, whereas the 9500ix has about a 1 mile detection range-- and I'm not talking about country roads folks, this is a busy suburban city with lots of signal interference. One thing that I would like to point out, there is an intersection I drive by every day to get to the main roads and I get a weak false Ka alert, when I attempt to lock it out, (pressing mute button 3 times) I can only silence it, it will not store the false Ka alert , whereas K and X bands are easily locked out. I'm not sure why we can't lockout Ka false alarms, but hopefully that will be fixed with some firmware updates. Laser Detection is just okay: Until today I hadn't really experienced a Laser alert, it was quite loud and distinctly different .Once I heard the sound and looked up it displayed the words "LASER" the arrows in all directions flashing, I did not see any police vehicles at any time during or after the laser alert but that doesn't mean there wasn't a threat. Another thing I've noticed: sometimes I get a laser alert when there are emergency vehicles in the vicinity or directly ahead of me with the overhead lights engaged , I'm not sure what this means but something I thought I should share. Laser is the most dangerous of the all, if your detector goes off for a laser it's already to late. Good news about laser is the cop has to be standing outside or have their window rolled down to use it (with the exception of motorcycle cops) so you shouldn't worry too much about Lidar if the weather is bad. Lazy pigs would rather use the radar built into the police cruiser wh ed not it's raining I'm sure. Finally placement of your detector is very important, some will say up high, others day down low on the dash. From my experience, up high out of sight has yielded the best results for me, because A) the birds eye view adds for maximum range detection, and B) crooks and cops can't see it as easily. If you have a power dimming mirror I suggest purchasing a mirror tap cable and eliminating that tacky "look at me" cigarette lighter power cord as it attracts too much attention. The last thing you want is for your $650 radar detector to get stolen or get hassled by a cop just for noticing the detector smack dab in the center of the windshield. The whole purpose of the detector is disappear, it is a powerful countermeasure when installed properly, so do it right the first time. Features: this is where the Max 360 really stands out, the internal hardware has been slightly improved upon over the Passport Max and Max 2, most notably the ability to filter out the ever increasing issue of collision avoidance and blind spot monitoring systems, and active cruise control in newer vehicles. Even with the latest firmware (1/12/16) this has NOT been totally resolved yet, even with the Arm chip and the upgraded DSP, I still receive many false K alerts, but the speed in which the Max 360 processes and eliminates the false signals has been improved significantly when compared to the 9500ix, and just somewhat over the Passport Max and the Max 2. If you're still using a 9500ix or X50 , then then whip out the credit card baby, or better learn to start driving the speed limit again. ... show more
