  • Best Radar Detector I've laid eyes on. Pricey but well worth it. Won't leave home without it.
5/5 Rating This is the bEST radar detector on the market and also my first. I can remember in college a friend of mine had one and it would go off whenever we're on a road trip or driving around the city. It didn't stop him from getting speeding tickets but I'm sure he would've gotten a lot more if it weren't for his radar detector. Now if he gotten this, it would be a completely different story. This radar detector is the BEST on the market, the functionality, the range, the settings, the accessories.. all of these make this the best thing smoking. The power cable that comes with it is very high quality, it also has a mute button so you can stop the detection alert if you want. It picks up everything including laser. To top it off you have access to a free companion app that allows you to have access to the radar and change it's settings. You would be able to have more control when using app. This detector is top notch and when you add the companion app R/Tach, you can't go wrong. Now I'm looking for mounting brackets. Pros Technological wonder Super accurate Long range Muiltiole detection functionality Works great with companion app and Waze Nicce accessories High quality cables and Sticky mount Cable contains a mute button Comes with carrying case and neoprene case for the Detector Cons None as of yet. This thing works great. To get the best out of it you will need to dive more into the technical aspect of the settings. ... show more

  • I would recommend this to others caught in the "analysis-paralysis" of picking a radar detector.
Was an Escort loyalist since the Passport days... but that does not get you anywhere I learnt. I went through the motions of research and reviews when I needed a new detector, and while the Uniden seemed to be the obvious choice, I remained loyal to Escort, until I tried to purchase the Redline from them. Final straw was Escort customer service during the purchase cycle - not the friendly sales agents, but their corporate policies after their system rejected my purchase but put a pending sale hold on my card, and could do nothing to resolve it, nor expedite the purchase thereafter for my upcoming road trips without deducting expedited shipping from their trade-in program. Their faulty but I was expected to pay. Contradictory advertised incentives when it comes to "free expedited shipping" and then deducting it if you use the trade-in program. Call it fate or karma, but it convinced me to try Uniden, and I am SO HAPPY I did. I have used this unit on two long, round-trip road trips in the weeks immediately after this purchase, and an impressed at the range of this unit. Got momentary early warnings as state patrol did not continuously have their radar guns on, and sure enough, came across them hidden at on-ramps. Also loved the multiple signals warnings, and a lot of other features just not available in the Escort. When researching, I was overwhelmed at how programmable this unit is, and how "easy" the Escort is to use, comparatively. While reviewers say this is an "enthusiast's detector" don't be deterred by that. NO WORRIES. I used the available files online by VORETX RADAR (whose reviews were helpful too - THANK YOU !!) to program the baseline on this detector. It is not complicated - you just upload his file to this unit after you plug it into your PC. It takes care of the frequencies to block (frequencies used by the collision radars used by the Hondas, Toyotas, etc. that are so annoying to a radar detector user). I then customized it farther for the visual stuff. I am now using it with the R8 Companion app on my phone (you don't need to), and while this all sounds complicated, it was REALLY EASY to set up. It would be nice if @uniden themselves provided a file online with automotive radar frequencies that one could upload, but as mentioned, VORTEX Radar gives us that. Very happy with the switch. I would recommend this to others caught in the "analysis-paralysis" of picking a radar detector. ... show more

  • Best radar on the market!
I recently purchased the Uniden R8W, and I have to say, it has exceeded my expectations in several ways. This radar detector is packed with features that cater to both casual drivers and serious road enthusiasts. Firstly, the extreme long-range detection capabilities are impressive. I’ve noticed it picks up radar signals from quite a distance, giving me ample time to react. The 360° awareness feature provides complete coverage, which is essential for staying informed about all potential threats on the road. One of my favorite features is the directional arrows. They indicate where the signal is coming from, which helps me assess my surroundings better. The real-time voice alerts are also helpful because they keep my eyes on the road instead of forcing me to glance at the device constantly. The addition of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity is a game changer. It allows for easy updates and lets me connect the detector to my smartphone using the R/TACH app. With this app, I can access helpful features like real-time location data and community alerts for red light and speed cameras. It significantly enhances my awareness of potential hazards. The built-in GPS functionality is another standout feature. It not only helps in providing alerts for red light and speed cameras, but it also allows for the option to mark locations, which can be useful for remembering areas where I’ve encountered speed traps before. The design of the unit is sleek and modern, fitting nicely with my car's interior. The display is clear and intuitive, which makes it easy to navigate through the various settings and options. Overall, I highly recommend the Uniden R8W for anyone in the market for a reliable and feature-rich radar detector. It offers fantastic performance and the peace of mind that comes with advanced detection technology. Whether you're a frequent traveler or just drive occasionally, its capabilities provide excellent value for the investment. ... show more

  • DO NOT BUY!!! GARBAGE!!!! NO QUALITY CONTROL!!!
DON’T BUY IT!!! Expensive piece of JUNK!!!! $800 for this garbage. Where is the quality control???!!!! Dead on arrival. Won’t power on. I tried the lighter cord, the usb cord and the power cord from my 10+ year old Valentine One. Nothing. Not even a beep or any sign of life. Valentine One is made like a tank and it’s beautiful. I was looking to upgrade because my V1 is outdated and decided to go with “the best”, as per reviews. What a mistake. Uniden should come to my house and pick this up, or just approve me throwing it out, instead of me wasting my time taking it to the UPS store. $800!!! It feels like a toy. Uniden is printing money with these things. Probably costs them $20 to produce overseas. Buy American made for the win!!! Not this garbage. ... show more

  • Best Radar Detector out there...
I have had the R3, then the R7 for quite some time. Recently, we wanted a 2nd detector, so I went looking. I looked at the Escort Redline 360c and this R8w. I liked the idea of the Escort integration with Android Auto and such but the bottom line for a detector, is how well and what it can detect. The biggest advantage the R8w has, for me is the ability to detect Gatso 3/4 radar, which is becoming prevalent in my area. Plus the R8w range is second to none in range. It even outdoes my R7, which with the International firmware, is pretty darn good as well. It also has apps out there on both iOS and Android that integrate well with this detector(albeit not as well with Android Auto/Carplay) Pros LONG range detection Detects Gatso radar Offers good lockouts Offers a TON of settings/adjustments to really dial in the detection for your area Big screen with visibility when needed. Cons Not a huge fan of their mounting clip. The Escort magnetic quick release has it beat Can be chatty if not adjusted well. It's not as well a plug and play detector as the Redline Plastic body which makes it feel a bit cheap compared to the Redline, although the plastic keeps it light Overall, if you want the best radar detector that can detect the furthest and covers as many radar types as possible, this is the one for you. Just takes a little bit to dial it in. Vortex Radar has a great article on how to do this as well as recommended settings. ... show more

  • The Best Detector Out There
I had an R7 and LOVED that unit... until my wife decided she LOVED it more and liberated it from my car. Only one remedy: a new R8W! And I love that even more! Very very very very long range. If you get a ticket while using this you either didn't have it on or the cop wasn't using Radar or Laser.

  • Top of the Line
Purchased this unit 12/6/2025. It is expensive- yes. It is worth it? From a feature standpoint thus far- I will say yes. The R8W (vs R8) gives you the ability to update the firmware via WiFi instead of manually plugging into a computer. By using a hotspot or the WiFi in my shop, I can check for updates via the app (Bluetooth) before getting on the road. The Bluetooth pairing is intuitive and easy. I have my phone paired to 3-4 items at a given time (WiFi, audio, watch, Uniden…) and have no issues with the unit or app. I think the “use case” matters greatly for this unit. I drive many miles, often at night, through largely rural regions. Several hundred miles between stops and/or settlements. For me, this is an added layer of security for “unseen” threats. When roads are empty and weather permits, going above the speed limit is prudent. The Uniden R8W gives me added confidence when I can’t look for threats, avoiding a stop in the middle of the night on a driverless highway. Now for city use, I cannot speak to its effectiveness consistently. It works. It will pick up any radar in a 2-block radius. You will need to fine tune and use lock-out for these situations. I believe the app is handy here, but it doesn’t apply to my use-case so I can’t confirm. The unit is sleek, aesthetically pleasing, and looks like it belongs in your vehicle. The screen is angled ever so slightly so the driver can see clearly, while the detector is pointed straight ahead. The factory mount is the best option (Reddit confirmed) and the unity itself can be removed by pressing the button, leaving the suction cup on the windshield. There are numerous aftermarket mounts and hardwiring kits, but I am keeping mine factory as I plan to use it in several vehicles. I am making a 1000+ mile drive in mid-December. I will report back with updates post-trip. ... show more

  • One of the best radars out there
This thing is a beast at range and has saved my butt multiple times, although expensive it’s got everything and more than what I need. The GPS does take a little for it to find itself but that’s no big deal to me, by the time I’m on the road it’s already been connected. The noise levels are pretty good and it’s usually on a 6 for me to not go deaf lol. This is a niche problem but if you have any upgraded speakers or a good subwoofer, fair warning this thing WILL rattle quite loud right where it clips into the mount. ... show more
