  • Great printer for fine art reproductions!
Style: Printer Only
Easy to use. Reliable. I print about once a week or 10 days. Ink that comes with it lasts a long time! Took me awhile to figure out that to get it to print I had to change the settings on the print screen that comes up before you can hit print. I use the drop down menu to make several selections instead of the default "print preview" on the print setting page. I select the size, fine art front load (instead of basic), the type of paper, quality speed, advance color settings etc. I always select the "matte black" since I use that for fine art reproductions instead of the "photo black". It tends to default to the last used settings which usually means "photo black" even though I don't use it, and so I check it each time to make sure "matte black" is selected, even when I know I want to use the last setting which was 'matte black'. If you change colors of black then it takes a lot of ink and time to clean the heads first before it will print, it is worth the couple seconds to check it each time. ... show more

  • Love the printer, don't love the black ink switching.
Style: Printer Only
It's weird, I almost feel like I'm lying by only rating the printer 4 stars. The prints are gorgeous once you get the settings dialed in. Used with a high quality photo paper (personally, I love the Ilford GALERIE Prestige line of papers) you'll get prints that will absolutely blow away anything from CVS and the like. Purely from an image quality standpoint, fully 5 stars. I like the touchscreen menu system, which makes it easy to change the settings. There are also some Epson phone apps that allow you to print photos directly from your phone over the wifi connection (not something I'd do often, but on rare occasion it makes a convenient way to get prints for visiting relatives, etc). My primary issue with the printer so far is the way it shares a line between the photo black ink and the matte black ink. If you were previously printing a glossy print and you want to switch to a matte paper for something, the printer first has to clear the line of any photo black that's in there, which wastes several dollars worth of ink. Then the same thing has to happen again when you switch back. It's inefficient and costly, and I may not be an engineer, but I can't think of a single reason why this is necessary (especially considering the competing Canon photo printers manage to have separate lines). So the upshot is that I find myself subconsciously avoiding doing any work with the matte ink because I don't want to waste money. I looked it up, and switching from matte to photo black uses 3 ml of ink (more than 11% of the cartridge capacity!) while going in the other direction uses 1 ml. There's a "Save Ink" option in the menu system that reduces it to 1 ml in each direction, but I'm not sure what the drawback would be. I assume it has something to do with potential mixing/contamination of the two inks. I'm willing to take that chance, I think. The cost of ink is going to be an important consideration. You've probably heard it a hundred times before: manufacturers supposedly take a huge loss on printers because they know that you'll get locked in to their ink cartridges, and that will more than make up for the printer that they practically gave away. This printer may be more expensive than many, but the idea is still the same. Consider that currently, the replacement ink set will run you $279. I tried to find some statistics on usage levels, and if you search for "red river P600 cost per print", the first result will be a link to a useful breakdown of approximate cost. They did 200 (8x10) prints at the lower quality level (1440x720) and found that you're averaging one cartridge change about every 30 prints. This means that the total cost per 8x10 is around $1. Of course, that price goes up when you print at either of the higher resolutions, but unfortunately the test did not include any of this information. I'm currently looking into refillable cartridges, I figure it's worth a shot. If it doesn't work out, I can always switch back, but the potential cost savings is significant. ... show more

Printer worked well when first received. It replaced an Epson R 1900. After two weeks something happened to the print head in that colors were not printing well. I contacted Epson Tech Support and was instructed to clean the print head (after two weeks of ownership and maybe 20 prints. Did not cure the problem. I decided to replace, and hope the new one will be OK when received. I will review and revise my rating if the new one proves to be dependable. Amazon replaced (from time of malfunction to working replacement 48 hours). New printer is producing beautiful prints and no issues with print head. ... show more

  • 2nd one was bricked too - After 3 months it was bricked. Called Epson, They said They will replace it with a refurbished one.
Style: Printer Only
Update 3/19/2016: Down to 2 star. Last night the replacement P600 stopped printing Black color again. I called Epson this morning and they are sending another "Refurbished" unit. Another $279.00 waisted. I have changed my rating from 3 to 2 now. I am leaving 1 more star for the next one. Ask around before you order the P600. The first one could have been just bad luck. But 2 in a row with the same exact problem is no coincidence, there is something wrong. Original Review: Feb, 2016 I was planing to write a review after using it for a while but unfortunately now I have to report that when it worked it was a great printer. After only 3 months it was bricked. Called Epson, They said They will replace it with a refurbished one. Just a warning to potential buyers. I don't think this is an isolated lemon. The fact that they readily offer to replace it without the usual "lets try this lets try that" tells me that there is a bad batch or all of them are bad. And it is just a matter of time for them to go. Otherwise this is a great printer. Easy to setup and calibrate. The print quality is really great and plays very nice with Lightroom. I gave it 3 star because it is good printer and they offered to replace it. But with a refurbished one and I lose all my inks that I just replaced. I am not happy. Hope this help some of you save some money (9x$31= $279.00) worth of inks purchased just recently on Amazon. -Mike ... show more
