This is my first infrared thermometer, and I do not actually have a specific project that requires one right now. It was one of those tools I figured would be useful to have in my toolbox, though, so I selected it even without an immediate need. I have played around with it around the house, and so far, it seems to work well. It is very easy to use. Even before reading the instructions, I was able to figure out the basics, including switching between Celsius and Fahrenheit and taking a temperature reading. I went full nerd and read the entire instruction manual anyway, which thankfully is not very long. That is where I learned about the calibration option and the emissivity setting, which needs to be adjusted depending on the type of material being measured. I will admit I had to look up exactly what emissivity means, but at least I now know why that setting is there and that it matters for getting accurate readings. I do wish the emissivity chart were printed somewhere on the actual thermometer rather than only included on the flimsy paper instruction manual. I may take a picture of the chart and laminate it so I have a more durable reference to keep with the thermometer. The temperature readings have seemed accurate based on the limited testing I have done so far, and the display is easy to read. There are also maximum and minimum modes that let you scan an area and look for the highest or lowest temperature. The laser can be turned on or off, and the beeping can also be disabled, which gives you some flexibility depending on how you are using it. The only real drawback I see is the battery setup. It uses two AAA batteries instead of having a built-in rechargeable battery, although two AAA batteries are included. Personally, I prefer rechargeable tools, but I can also see the advantage of being able to swap in fresh batteries instead of waiting for the device to charge. It works with both traditional alkaline AAA batteries and rechargeable AAA lithium batteries. I have not used it enough yet to get a good idea of battery life. The automatic shutoff happens after about seven seconds of inactivity, which seems a little quick to me. On the positive side, that should help conserve the batteries, especially if I inevitably forget to turn it off myself. The thermometer is comfortable to hold, but the entire body is plastic without any rubberized grip. The buttons are the typical silicone style, but there is no rubber coating on the handle itself. If you are using it with sweaty or wet hands, I could see it becoming a little slippery. It also does not come with a carrying case or wrist strap, and there is not even a hole for attaching one, so there is not much protection or extra security when carrying it around. For something I did not technically need yet, I have been having fun finding excuses to point it at things around the house. It has enough features to be useful for more than just getting a basic temperature reading, and the calibration and emissivity settings give it some added flexibility for more serious projects. Value: The current price of this infrared thermometer gun is $19.99 USD. Prices for infrared thermometers vary quite a lot, but considering the included batteries and the additional calibration, emissivity, and temperature scanning functions, I think this is a decent value.

One thing I know for sure is boiling water is 212 degrees and where I live because of elevation, 210 degrees. So let's make a test with a candy thermometer which is pretty exact and I have the Elitech DIT-520 and the Harbor Freight CEN-TECH Infrared Thermometer for comparison. Getting pictures around boiling water is harder than expected. The readings on both were close. The Elitech seemed to be a lower temp by about 3 degrees when checking a wall. No way of knowing which is correct. A/C is set at 71 degrees, I'm checking a South facing wall with sunshining on the outside. Both temps are credible. Some nice features on the Elitech are all the different modes which the manual explains. Full color display on the Elitech. The laser spot expands at a further distance to show you the area it is averaging. This is a nice feature. The Cen-Tech has a single spot so you really don't know what could be in the field of averaging temperature. The only feature missing was a lanyard for the handgrip that the Cen-Tech did have. Both units take 2 AAA batteries which were included on the Elitech. Nice touch manufacturer, hate not being able to use a tool because something was missing! All in all, I think this is a good buy and close enough. The temp range is also out of this world, -58 to 1652 degrees Fahrenheit, and -5 to 900 degrees Centigrade. Quite a range. Also the laser can be turned off too for not drawing attention to what you are testing. Enjoy this product from Elitech. Great value and good quality. 73 de KE8GKO!

TL;DR: A solid, budget-friendly thermometer gun that delivers good temperature accuracy for soap making, though the slick plastic body definitely calls for a DIY lanyard. Review: Not bad at all for the price! I needed an upgrade since my trustier thermometer gun has been on duty for my soap making sessions since 2012. At this price point, I wasn't expecting luxury materials, but accuracy is what really counts. Comparing it to my old unit, the temperature discrepancy is minimal. Honestly, it might just reveal that my old thermometer was slightly off over the years, though working near room temperature with a typical 10-degree differential kept my final products turning out great regardless. New tool, new level of accuracy, same reliable soap. My main gripe is the lack of a lanyard and the slippery plastic housing. When working with oils, a textured rubber grip or a wrist strap is a must to keep it from taking a dive. Aside from adding my own lanyard, the screen display is clear, switching modes is intuitive, and it comes with plenty of features. It feels a bit cheap in hand, but performance-wise, it hits the mark. Grammar helper used to polish my English—the opinions and soapy hands are 100% mine!

I ordered this Elitech temp gun after my cheap one started arguing with itself, and I have been pointing it at everything that looks even a little suspicious. The plastic housing feels thicker than the usual toy grade stuff, the trigger has a clean click, and the color screen is easy to read even when the shop lights are doing that half dead flicker thing. First real test was the truck after a long drive. I checked the brake rotors, the exhaust near the manifold, and a couple of electrical connections that had been giving me that “is that warm or am I imagining it” feeling. The circle laser is smarter than a single dot. You can actually see what area it is averaging, which saved me from chasing a false hot spot on a shiny bracket. I also used it around the house like a nosy neighbor with a badge. Oven door, dryer vent, and that one outlet that always feels a little off. It tracks max and min without drama, and the alarm is loud enough that you notice it without jumping out of your skin. Adjustable emissivity sounds fancy until you try it on painted wood versus bare metal and realize why the cheap guns lie. Craftsmanship is better than the price tag suggests. Seams line up, the battery door does not feel like it will snap, and the included AAA cells actually worked out of the box. For the money this is one of those tools that earns a permanent hook on the pegboard instead of living in the junk drawer. Five stars and I would order another if this one ever disappears into a toolbox black hole.

Before ordering this infrared thermometer, I wanted to make sure I was buying from a reputable brand because I also wanted to document the brand and model number. And when I did a Google search on Elitech, I was thoroughly impressed. The company was founded in 1996 and they are a well-established brand specializing in HVAC tools, cold-chain monitoring, and environmental testing equipment. And trade professionals and technicians praise their products for offering strong digital performance, accuracy, and smart features at lower price points than traditional legacy test and measurement brands. I learned that the infrared thermometer measures surface temperature and not the actual temperature of air moving out of the mini-split. So, to test it out, I preheated my oven to 400 degrees with a dark metal baking sheet inside. Once the oven had been at that temperature for a while, I quickly opened the door and aimed the thermometer at the middle of the baking sheet. The reading was right around 400 degrees. I am really happy I ordered this Elitech thermometer. It seems like a very well-made piece of equipment. And for someone who doesn’t have any HVAC experience, like me, it was very easy to use. You just point and press the trigger and it instantly gives you a reading. And the laser made it very easy to aim at the exact spot that I wanted to record. And the numbers on the screen are easy to read. There are different modes and alarms, but those were too advanced for me to figure out. It is definitely worth its full list price of $20 and I highly recommend it.

I already have another infrared thermometer, but this one has quickly become my preferred option. It works noticeably better for the tasks I have used it for, and I especially appreciate the higher temperature range. Having a wider range makes this thermometer much more versatile and useful for checking different temperatures where a standard thermometer may not be suitable. The readings are easy to check, and the overall design makes it simple to point, measure, and move on to the next area. This thermometer is battery powered, which is perfectly fine for my needs. I do not use an infrared thermometer constantly, so I prefer not having to worry about keeping a rechargeable battery topped off between uses. I can keep batteries available and grab the thermometer whenever I need it. The handheld design is convenient, and it is easy to store in a toolbox or other equipment area without taking up much space. For something that I only use occasionally, the battery-powered setup works well and keeps things simple. I am very impressed with how much better this thermometer performs compared with the one I already owned. Higher temperature range is a major advantage, especially when working on projects or checking temperatures where additional range is important. It has become a useful tool to keep available even though I may not use it every day. The combination of good performance, a wide temperature range, simple battery operation, and convenient handheld design makes it a worthwhile addition to my tools. If you need an infrared thermometer that offers more versatility than a basic model, this one is highly worth considering and has earned a permanent place in my toolbox.

I have a problem with one of my refrigerators. It isn't getting cold enough. Fortunately this item was already on the way, as I started trying to repair. Turns out that a mouse ate the wires leading to the compressor fan, so the mouse has gone to heaven and the fan doesn't work. When this thermometer arrived I put it right to work. I measured the temperature of a shelf in each of our three refrigerators, and found out that the problem refrigerator after my partial fixing was 2 degrees C higher than one of our other refrigerators, so still usable for some food. Then I shot it at the compressor on that problem refrigerator and it said it was 82 degrees C, a bit hot but not above normal operating range. So I can run it a while as I figure out how to fix the fan, and I know there's still refrigerant in the system. Within an hour after I received it, I learned I was able to use my old refrigerator for a while longer, and something about what needed to be fixed. For $20, I'd say it's a bargain. It's really easy to use. After inserting the two included AAA batteries, pull the trigger once to turn it on, then point at the object you want to measure, and pull the trigger again. The reading is instantaneous, in clear numbers. The instructions are very good, telling you that the area measured (for average temperature) has a diameter 1/12 of the distance it is away from the gun.

This thermometer was impressively accurate right out of the box and initially matched temperatures I already knew. Unfortunately, after my kid changed some of the settings, I have not been able to get that accuracy back. I returned every setting I can find to how it was when I first opened it, but the readings are still noticeably off. A device like this should be easier to restore to its original calibration, so despite the strong first impression, I would not choose it again.
