This kit comes with (almost) everything you need to get started. The only missing item that is absolutely required is chain oil. The directions are very sparse and really only explain how the telescoping pole extension works. Normally a chainsaw comes with a thick manual full soft safety warnings. I'm reviewing it for what it is - a very light-duty chainsaw for cutting limbs and branches. This is not going to do heavy-duty work. On the plus side: Chain installation is trivially simple, and there is even a reminder graphic on the arm showing the proper chain direction. The chain tension adjustment is simple and works well. You don't need any tools. It comes with a screwdriver, though I'm not really sure why. It comes with 4 blades. That is a really nice bonus. It's reasonably powerful with a pair of 21V lithium batteries - but it's not going to do the work of a 2-stroke or corded electric. It comes with a pair of charge cords - you can charge both batteries at once since each battery has a socket to plug the charger into. A few minor annoyances: When you set it down, you must set it on its side to avoid having the blade touch the ground. The kickback bar does not brake the chain - so it's largely decorative. The telescoping feature leaves the front grip on the part the telescopes away, so you won't have a good grip while it's extended. The carrying case is fairly lightweight. It works, but it's not going to take abuse. For what it is, it's a decent deal. Just don't expect this to replace your DeWalt, Skil or Husqvarna. Highly recommended for light duty work if you already know how to safely operate a chainsaw.

Things I like: -The brushless motor is a great feature. Providing better battery performance, power, and other advantages, it's a big improvement over those units that have brushes. All the better cordless hand tools have moved to brushless designs. -Despite the light weight, it incorporates a 12" chain bar. In conjunction with the high speed and big torque motor, jobs get done quicker. I was impressed with how quickly my tree work was completed. -Actually, yes, I actually really enjoyed finding the included funnel in the kit. It's a little thing, but you really need one to avoid a mess when adding oil and often it's frustratingly time-consuming to hunt one down. Of the 4 other cordless chainsaws I've reviewed, the PBUO is the only brand that has included a funnel. -At 3.5 pounds., it's so light weight that almost anyone can use this chainsaw. -The telescoping feature will come in handy. It's a 2 position design with the first stop extending 6 additional inches, and full extension is 13". It's not a lot, but might be just enough to avoid getting a ladder. -Having two 4Ah batteries (see more below) is good for extending the time you are able to work. But in another first in my experience, PBUO includes not 1 charger, but 2 of them. This means you can get back to work in half the time with charged batteries. -Easy to operate chain tightener. No tool required for the tightener or anything else. -Lots of extra items for those that need them, especially the inclusion of 4 chains total. Dislikes: -These batteries are not the best quality. I load tested both fully charged batteries and found that each provided a little less than 2.7Ah of capacity, not the rated 4Ah. That's only 67.5%. In most of my tests, I see these budget brand batteries with capacities in the 75%-85% of rated range, so these a bit sub-par by any measure. -In cutting down the 12" trunk tree in the photos, the saw came to a sudden stop twice. I'm pretty sure either the motor or the batteries over-heated. After a bit I was able to continue, so be aware this may happen to you if you don't allow for some cool down time. -The safety trigger is a little finicky to engage until you get used to it. I don't like it. -The instruction manual is certainly lacking. Very few instructions and underexposed photography isn't very helpful. If you are brand new to chainsaws and wouldn't describe yourself as "handy", this may not be the best fit due to the meager directions. Despite the drawbacks, I feel that this kit at the current price of $88 is a good value. In sheer cutting ability, it's performance puts some others to shame. It's relatively quiet and easy to handle. Plus, it has some useful features and additional items like the funnel, storage bag, cleaning brush, etc. Not a bad buy.

I'm of two minds about this unit. On the one hand, it definitely works - I took it out and pruned back some dead branches that I've been meaning to get to, and it chewed through them quickly. It's also about half the cost of comparable brand-name units. That said, there are drawbacks. The instruction manual lacks some important elements: it doesn't tell you what the appropriate level of tension for a chain-saw of this type is, doesn't tell you what kind of oil or how much the unit should take, doesn't tell you how to charge the batteries. The answer to that last one is that there are AC wall adapters which can, when the batteries are removed, be inserted into the top of the battery near the latch. For a battery like this - copied from the dewalt pattern, and thus designed to fit into a charging dock - I'd like to see the dock included, and skip the wall chargers. That said, there are two included so you can charge both batteries at once - and I think that's a really nice feature. My main concern with this item is the hand guard. Most chain saws have a guard near the knuckles, and in the event that your hand moves too far forward, or the saw kicks back suddenly, that guard trips a lock-out and shuts down the saw. That's an especially important feature for a larger saw. This saw has that guard, but it's not connected to anything - when it shifts forward, the saw keeps running. This is okay - it's not a huge saw - but I'd really prefer that if the safety guard isn't going to cut-out the motor, that it not move at all. A rigid hand guard would be safer than one that moves but doesn't connect to anything else. If you're an experienced user or willing to be extra careful, I don't think this is a huge issue - but it seems like a shortcut to me. The trigger does have a nice trigger-safety button, to keep the unit from activating if you're not intending it to. For light-duty and a careful user, I think this unit is just fine, and a good budget option. The telescoping feature works *really* well - it slides out easily, and locks securely in place. Full credit for that!
