Description

ELAC's Debut Reference bookshelf speakers feature a cast chassis woofer and soft-dome tweeter that deliver a clear, rich and detailed stereo sound. A new tighter weave pattern on our aramid fiber woofer provides smoother high-frequency response to deliver clean, accurate bass for both music and movies. Full-perimeter internal bracing reduces cabinet vibration, minimizing the cabinet's effects on the overall sound quality of the speakers.

  • (Almost) perfect bookshelfs for the price!
Right off the bat, these speakers look fantastic in person. The pictures do not do them justice. Very classy appearance with the white baffle, light wood, and metal tweeter cover and the build quality to boot. On to the important part, how do they sound? I'll highlight the main attractions and takeaways: The Positives: 1. IMAGING: These speakers place instruments with accuracy that surprised me. Referencing my headphones (where the room and positioning of the sound source are taken out of the equation), individual instruments from the Elacs sounds distinct and well placed. I found that a slight toe in does benefit imaging, although your results may vary with room, placement, etc. (Headphones I use: Focal Clear original, DCA Aeon Noire, Audeze LCD-X, Hifiman Sundara and others) 2. WELL BALANCED ACROSS THE FREQUENCIES: The Elacs articulate the sparking cymbal hits down to the visceral hits of bass drums, with no frequency range overly exaggerated or diminished in between. It is a relatively balanced listen that caught me off guard at first, and with the right front end pairing, you really can shape the sound to your preferences and make them magical. 3. OVERALL CLARITY: Because of how no frequencies are overly emphasized and how low the distortion seemingly is, they can sound deceptively "quiet". I tend to like more transparent gear so this is a definite plus in my books. Vocals and instruments all sounds very clear and well defined with good detail. The Caveats and Nitpicks: 1. HIGHS: The high frequencies are well controlled and overall presents a balanced sound, but I wish it was just a smidge more smooth and refined. It can be a just tad grainy. Although this is probably unfair to ask given how capable for the price the product is already. 2. MID/LOW MIDS: There is no denying this speaker is on the slightly warmer side. Specifically there is a small bump in the mid/low mids that is apparent when I listen to vocals. It tends to lend well to male vocals, giving it more body and fullness, but certain instrument tonalities does get slightly affected by it. 3. PAIRING: As reviewers have pointed it out already, these speakers gets going with a higher-end amplifier (most speakers hopefully do). This is not really a criticism, but it needs to be pointed out. The Elacs will sound great with great amplifiers regardless of price BUT I do get the impression that they tend to sound "thin" if the output power on the amplifier is on the lower side. Overall, I would highly recommend these speakers for people who value a non-fatiguing listen with great clarity and overall tonal balance with added potential of performance if upgrading the Front-end (Amplifier, DACs, etc) since they are decently transparent. ... show more

  • Wife approved
I “needed” a new set of speakers for a condo and I ended up keeping them in our main home. I am running with a Bluesound Powernode 2i and an RSL Speedwoofer and 24 inch Monoprice stands. My research found them to be a great value while having favorable reviews both scientifically and subjectively. Most importantly they sound great. Bonus is they look darn cool with high WAF. I would recommend trying them out! ... show more

  • Sweet midrange, good bass, extended yet still smooth highs. Compare favorably to my $3000 speakers
Imaging is also quite good. I am comparing these to my previous $3200 (!) speakers that I have loved and lived with for over a decade. Those speakers got physically damaged so I need to replace them. I am driving these Elacs with a fairly powerful amp - QUAD 909. I don't know how these speakers would perform with low wattage amp, but I have heard they really benefit from wattage. They sound excellent at a fairly high volume. I haven't done any extened low level listening. I wil say that one of my tests for a great speaker is that I *want* to keep the volume up. No listener fatigue with these guys, which is a great sign. So many folks buy cheap components and then they wonder why they can only listen for an hour or so at a time, before they have to either turn the volume way down or just give up and do something else. The reason is basically lack of fidelity in their system, which generates "listener fatigue". Often folks don't recognize it consciously, but they just find themselves not wanting to listen for long, and think it is normal. Nope. The bass is totally there, substantial and taut. The midrange is compelling, dynamic, and sweet. The highs are extended but still smooth and non-fatiguing. I will be listening I am sure for many hours per day with these guys. Truly awesome value. After listening for only a couple hours, these seem to be unbeatable to me in anywhere near there price range, and probably unbeatable at 2x or 3x price range. So it is a few days later and I did try my 25 watt OTL Tube amp with these speakers. Definitely lose a lot of bass when listening at good volume. Very low level listening not so different. But the bass just seemed "loose", indistinct, and soft at medium to high volume with the 25 wpc tube amp. That amp is known for good bass for a tube amp, but not so much with these speakers. I guess they need more than 25wpc unless very near field listening. I sit about 12 feet away in a medium sized room, definitely not near-field listening... ... show more
