  • Is this REALLY able to replace a gas engine mower? Yes it is!
Style: 21" w/(2) 6.0Ah Batteries, Select Cut
This mower cuts very well. It actually cuts better than my Toro Personal Pace mower. I have a 1/4 acre residential lot. The two 6ah batteries are more than enough power. It takes about 50 minutes to mow when I mulch using the self propel function. I use one full battery plus 1 bar on the second battery. This mower is lighter and not as loud as a gas mower. Per some videos I use the "High-lift" blade when mulching for the best results. I did use the mulching blade a couple of times, and as other owners have experienced, there are quite a few uncut grass blades...a noticeable amount. I set the cut height to 3". Using the high lift blade and the mulch plug inserted, it cuts up the grass just fine. My grass space is about 7300 sq. ft. One 6ah battery can mow about 6300 - 6500 sq. ft. using the self propel mode much of the time. Your mileage may vary, and due to the nature of rechargeable batteries, that mileage will decrease over time from repeated recharge cycles. My biggest question was "can this REALLY replace a gas mower?" My conclusion is Yes, absolutely. If someone was considering getting into the Ego ecosystem and looking to start with a mower, I would look for deals on the mower/battery(ies)/charger combination, rather than buying just the mower and then purchasing the battery(ies) separately. The package deals are FAR cheaper than buying just the individual tool if you are just starting out. No more gas/oil hassles. Just charge the batteries and go. There was no assembly. Just unfold, and extend the adjustable height handle to one of 3 positions for mowing. There is a 4th position (going forward) that is used when removing/reinstalling the grass bag to move the handle out of the way of the bag. Very convenient. Charge the battery, put it in the mower, and you're ready to mow. It's nice to not have to store gas, or do oil changes anymore. Even though the housing is composite plastic, it feels durable, and shouldn't be a problem after many years of use. Overall I am very happy with the quality and capability of this mower. After using it several times, I much prefer this to my Toro gas mower. ... show more

  • Class leading performance and flexibility Class leading performance and flexibility
Style: 21" w/(2) 6.0Ah Batteries, Select Cut
This is my 3rd electric lawnmower in three years, and in my opinion is class leading in design, flexibility, and performance. I'm an retired distinguished engineer for an international semiconductor company, so maybe my expectations in a variety of areas are a bit more demanding, but so be it- this mower brings a grin to my face every time I use it! Corners were not cut in its design or implementation is the net takeaway that I have. First, the charger is higher power, faster, and the battery and charger system and connectors seem designed to optimize efficiency and minimize looses. Second, the setup for the mower is VERY flexible as regards the blades and optimizing function- it is normally setup with one fixed blade, then three additional blades to choose from for optimizing the mower function for how you use it. The blade optimized for bag filling is my favorite, and puts that part of function in a class of its own, in my experience. Third, the handle bar is well optimized both for solid functionality and height adjustment, ease of maneuver and control access, but also with its telescopic design folds down to a very compact unit for storage. That's an important consideration for me. Fourth, the motors seem to be optimized for high efficiency as well as strong output- the self propelled function works well, but even better, this is the first mower than can handle my whole large back yard with a single battery charge. And with two provided batteries, doing both front and back at the same time is a breeze. Curiously, I got an early endorsement for this mower before I bought mine from an acquaintance on my block who was also a power conversion specialist, developing battery chargers for space craft. So, yes, for me, compared with the others I have tried, all with good reputations, the EGO is out of this world... ... show more

  • Two Months In: An honest and critical review Two Months In: An honest and critical review
Style: 21" w/(2) 6.0Ah Batteries, Select Cut
There are some key differences between an electric mower and a gas mower that people should be aware of. I'll stick to this mower (and batteries/charger) specifically, but I'll get into some electric lawnmower generalities as well. First off, having an electrically-propelled blade is a huge benefit. A gas mower will only spin the blade as fast as the motor itself (unless pulleys are involved). This mower spins the blade(s) faster, and can even detect when there's resistance from thicker/wetter grass, and give it a little boost. There are sections of my lawn that I know I'll always need to go over twice to catch all the stragglers. Less of an issue with this mower. The result is a flatter, neater, more even cut across the whole path. I assume part of this is to do with the dual blade design (I'm mulching) which is just about due for a sharpening on my mower. Getting it running took no time at all. I spent more time breaking down the cardboard than setting it up. Being able to adjust the deck height from a single lever is amazing. No more wondering or worrying about one side or one wheel being too low or high. This is a self-propelled model, and I still haven't gotten used to, or understand why, it is rear-wheel drive. Most gas mower I've used are front-wheel drive, so pivoting 180 degrees means pushing down on the handle, lifting the front wheels up, rotating on the rear wheels, then setting the fronts back down to start moving again. I've honestly never thought about it, but it makes sense. This mower pushes from the rear wheels, so turning means you have to un-press the "move forward" button (more on this later), wait and hope that the motor actually disengages from the wheels, and try to turn. If it doesn't, you have to rock it back and forth a little to... I guess get the gears to disengage, and then you can safely turn it without damaging anything. I've gotten better at timing my release so I don't catch the wheels and motor in a bad mood, but if this were simple front wheel drive, none of this would be an issue. It also sounds just like a 90's Power Wheels children's ride-on toy when engaged. Not a complaint about the performance per-say, just something I can't un-hear or un-notice. This also might come across as a nitpick, but pressing down the "go forward" button is a literal pain in my thumbs. Rather than a metal bar you pull and can easily tuck inside your grip as you grab the bar, imagine a pair of space bars, one on either side of the handle. At least for me, it's inconvenient to press these with my normal handle grip, so I have to mow the lawn with at least one thumb purposely pressed down on these buttons the whole time. I'd be tempted to hardwire these to a toggle switch or a better pressure sensor if it wouldn't void my warranty (more on this later). I have no complaints about the batteries or charger yet. If the lawn is dry and I'm not trying to do anything fancy with the lines, I can get my front and back lawn done within the life of 2 batteries. Perfect. After a week of rain, it's two batteries for back and sides, then I finish off the front once the first battery is done recharging. Normal battery smarts apply here. Don't run it all the way down (once it's blinking red, stop mowing ASAP. Don't wait until it runs out entirely). Don't try to charge a hot (freshly used) battery. The battery/charger will self-impose a little thermal time-out, but you'll be even better off if you wait an hour or two. Even with good battery habits, make sure you register everything as quickly as possible. Apparently there's a window when you cannot register any more, and seeing as how this is a newer product with high-usage batteries, there's a lot that could go wrong. The mower body and mechanics themselves are great. No worries about the composite plastic shell, the handle is comfortable (buttons nonwithstanding). There's a little green light up by the handle that's supposed to show the battery state and health, but I've never seen it do anything but show full green. Not sure what the deal is there. I wish there were more customization options. Just a way to interface with the mower's electronics and maybe fine-tune the blade speed or min/max forward speed. I want some gauges and buttons! All in all, it's a fantastic mower. The electric motor for the blade is a huge upgrade. If it were front-wheel drive, I'd be singing its praises. Maybe that'll be the next model. The other flaw/benefit/depends on how you see it is my neighbors always complaining that it must either be really underpowered or not have a lot of battery life. When I say that neither is an issue and that it cuts better than my old gas powered Husqvarna, they just say "I dunno" and wander off. It's a spinning blade, and a faster spinning blade is always better. ... show more

  • Easy to unbox. Easy to set up. Easy to use. Very light weight. Super happy with purchase.
Style: 21" w/(2) 6.0Ah Batteries, Select Cut
Just did first mow so not a long term review but rather a first impressions situation. The first thing to do is pull out the fast charger and a battery and get that charging. Super easy to unbox and set up. The only thing you really have to do is put the bag on the bag catcher frame. I went grocery shopping while it charged and it was done when I returned home an hour later. Unfold the handle (well labeled lever, push, pull - very self-explanatory), adjust length of pull and adjust height on the deck. Throw in battery and... you are ready to mow with the installed mulching blade. IT IS SO LIGHT. I was injured the majority of last year so I had a service mow my lawn last summer. This is the first time in a while I have attempted the job myself. It was so light and easy that I really didn't need to use the self-propelled bit of the mower. It's almost effortless? The wife liked how much less noisy it is; she REALLY liked zero exhaust. This thing is a WIN. I bought the version with two 6ah batteries. We have a big yard and it pretty much take one and half batteries to finish, but the first battery is already charged by the time I'm done and I throw the second on when finished. Do I like mowing again?!?!? Expensive. I'm glad I bought it. It's so light weight! ... show more

  • Powerful, effective... great mower
Style: 21" w/(2) 6.0Ah Batteries, Select Cut
I had an original model EGO mower... less power, no self-propel features. I worked great for many, many years until I finally wore it out. This model has more power (suction to suck the grass up so it can whack the blades off) and it does have a great, adjustable self propel capability to include turning it off. Moving to self propel takes a little adjustment since my thumbs keep triggering the propel feature when I'm maneuvering in tight quarters or just going around a corner... I'll figure it out. The larger motor for the extra suction/power, the huge battery, and the motors for the self propel feature does make this a heavier mower. Noticeably heavier. No worries, I need a heavier workout while mowing anyway. I do like the self propel feature and I like the bag. The mower definitely mows better than my old EGO. Overall, it is a significant step up in performance but also heavier, clunkier, wider and less wieldy. Both are great but without the self propel, this would be more of a beast... all pride aside, I used the self propel on long runs and on hills. As for the value of a battery powered lawnmower vs gas powered, I think they have tremendous value (and I own a diesel F250 and do my own maintenance). I no longer have to store gas in my garage/shed, I don't have to go to the gas station with my little red container, I don't have to do lawn mower oil changes, no worries about cleaning the carb after sitting all winter, no fuel preservatives, no leaks. This lawn mower is quiet so I can mow any time day or night without disturbing my neighbors. With no fluids, I can set this on it's side on my workbench to sharpen the blade. All I need is a place to set up my battery charger and to keep my batteries charged. I store my mower on its end so it takes less floor space in the garage. This is a game changer. The downside is that the batteries do cost a bit, but for a lawnmower that can be shoved in a backseat and hauled to grandma's house, that is acceptable to me. One battery lasts most of my yard when the grass is wet and heavy, but the second battery can charge to 100% from 25% in the same time (no beverage breaks to wait for the batteries to charge). I shifted to an all EGO lawn tool selection 10 years ago and have never had a regret. ... show more

  • Excellent Lawn mower. Impressive But plastic wheels.
Style: 21" w/(2) 6.0Ah Batteries, Select Cut
Very good mower. Some user suggestions. The first main one is do not set the mowers Drive system to high speed. it can move trust me. It is self propelled. I turned mine off and just push the mower by hand. So far the cut is good with the pre attached blades. Though the box came quite beat up. All parts inside were undamaged. You will also get 2 more blades with this model. A bagger and frame for the bagger The mulching block is pre installed just lift the back hatch and pull it out to install the blower chute. Make sure to pre charge the batteries all the way before first use. Also with this model of EGO mower you must fully extend the handle and clamp it into place before the mower will start. Insert the battery after you have extended the handle. And clamped it down. Its a very smooth working mower. and I recommend that you raise the setting on the first cut to be sure the mower can handle the grass length. For the first time you use it and test out what height over time you plan to cut at. This mower is quieter than other Battery operated mowers. But its blades move way faster. So it will cut well. Now As I have so far seen in my pre look over on the mower. it can get complicated to change it wheels. so pay close attention to those over time. the wheels are majority plastic and we all know what happens to that after a year or so. Especially wheels. My other battery operated mower had metal wheels and those are still working Factory installed. Never replaced. I have never been a major fan of self propelled anything. So I will likely never use this feature. I can tell you the high setting on the mower is fast. So plan for that and start slow. There is a rotating wheel on the handle which can easily be bumped. I keep mine in the off position. The LED lights are also a gift on this mower. as most mowers have less than adequate lighting on them. This one is very good I would like to add. the lights as always could be brighter or just more of them. But the lighting is good. You can also buy a cover for this mower. I would suggest this for those people who do not have any sort of inside storage for their mower. This will help protect the plastic housing of the mower from sun damage over time. And over the winter months if it must be left outside. NOTE that if you do not use the self propel feature the cut time on the battery will be longer. The same is true of the use of the LED lights. The mower has some weight to it. but it is not as heavy a many other mowers. Do not leave the battery in the mower after use. This kit also came with a phone holder that clicks on to the handle. This is a good idea as I like to listen to music when I cut. Whoever thought of that is a genius. If taken care of a mower like this will last longer than 10 years. ... show more

  • Great mower.
Style: 21" w/(2) 6.0Ah Batteries, Select Cut
This mower works great. Have only used it for mulching so far so can’t comment on bagging but can’t see any reason that it wouldn’t do well with the extra blade that was included for bagging. Unit is very light so it’s easy to maneuver around obstacles and on level ground it’s easy to push without having to use the self propulsion. My yard is large enough that I need the extra battery to finish the whole lawn. Batteries chargers up quickly. ... show more

  • Mediocre mowing at best/$$$$ Operational Costs
Style: 21" w/(2) 6.0Ah Batteries, Select Cut
This mower’s best attribute is storage, can’t beat it. Definitely has made a huge difference in my garage. As far as mowing goes, this 21 in mower is really an 11 in mower. I have to overlap by circa 10 in per pass to avoid little “Mohawks” all over the lawn. This greatly increases mowing time and requires the charge of 2 batteries plus about an 1/8 to a 1/4 of a third one. Over time this battery usage will amount to the most expensive mower usage for an average yard. I do not recommend this product. I saw a lot of reviews on YouTube before buying it. NONE of the reviews I viewed are consistent with the real world results. Prior to this mower I had a Toro gas mower, never ever had such inadequate mower performance, also the operational costs of the Toro was negligible compared to where this is heading. Lessons learned. No more ego anything and You Tube reviews are dead on my end. Very disappointed on all fronts. I do not recommend this product as an alternative to a lawn mower brand that’s been around for years has nothing to do with the power source, to me it appears it’s a mediocre design at best. ... show more
