  • Great silent rower
Style: Row
First I'll start with you do NOT need the app OR the echelon fitness subscription to use this rower. In fact I never use the app and never subscribed to the fitness classes. The only functionality you lose is the ability to see what resistance you're at (instead just know it always starts at 1 and it's easy to just count the beeps as you increase so you know where you're at) and what your pace and stroke rate is. If you don't need that, don't worry about their app. If you are interested in pace, stroke rate, and resistance, the app itself with NO subscription WILL suffice. Now that said, I really like this rower. It's almost silent, air resistance rowers are probably more realistic but I was worried about lots of noise spreading in my old building. This rower is silent on the flywheel, the only noise is from the movement of the seat and the foot holders squeaking a bit. It's very possible for someone to be rowing and someone else to be watching TV in the same room. It's very solid, not a lot of plastic, and feels great. Assembly was relatively straightforward and not difficult, though I would recommend having two people, it's definitely possible to assemble solo. Circling back to the app, it's a little janky and overall I would rate it as poor. If you don't pay for the subscription the only thing you can do is a "free row" where it tracks your time and pace and the like. If you pay the $40/month you get some classes and the ability to row to a video of someone out on a river. The river rows are a nice background but really I'd rather just watch Netflix or something while I'm rowing instead. I found the classes to be alright, the music was not to my taste and overall production value was mid range at best. I didn't subscribe past the free trial. Now I use Apple Fitness for $8/month which I find much better or just watch Netflix on my iPad mounted to the rower. I did a lot of research and for a beginning rower looking for a good home workout, high quality and not too expensive, I think this is the top pick. The ability to just mount a phone or tablet and put whatever you want on while you row is a step above most with built in screens only accessing their own app. Some will brick without internet or an app, this one works fine without either. Overall highly recommend, all but the most serious rowers looking for a quiet machine won't be disappointed. Update 1 year later: Still love the rower. Would not buy the more expensive Rower S with built in screen. Original review was for their simpler Rower with no screen, just a phone/iPad mount. The machine is slightly louder now as the band moves in and out of what would be the flywheel on an air resistance rower. It's still much quieter than an air resistance rower, but louder than first purchase. This is after over a year of pretty heavy use so not terribly unexpected. If you can find it (looks like Amazon only selling the Rower S now) I'd still have to recommend this machine. ... show more

  • A Surprisingly Enjoyable Way to Stay Fit—Right at Home
Style: Row S
I’ve had the Echelon Row Series for a few weeks now, and I genuinely look forward to using it. As someone who spends a lot of time working with my hands and sitting at a desk, I needed something that could give me a full-body workout without wrecking my joints—and this rowing machine delivers. Smooth, Low-Impact Motion The resistance is adjustable and feels natural, so I can push myself without straining. It’s quiet, fluid, and easy on the knees and back. I’ve noticed better posture and core strength already, which helps in the workshop too. 22” Rotating Screen = Motivation The built-in screen is a game changer. I can follow along with scenic rows or guided classes, and the rotation makes it easy to switch between rowing and floor workouts. It keeps me engaged and makes the whole experience feel premium. Foldable & Space-Smart Living in a space where every square foot counts, I appreciate how easily it folds up. It’s sturdy when in use but tucks away without hassle—perfect for a home setup that needs to stay flexible. Feels Like an Investment in Myself This isn’t just a piece of equipment—it’s a commitment to my health that actually fits my lifestyle. Whether I’m starting the day with a quick row or winding down with a low-impact session, it’s become part of my rhythm. If you’re looking for a workout that’s effective, enjoyable, and easy to integrate into daily life, this machine is absolutely worth it. ... show more

  • Nice rower but lacks resistance.
Style: Row
I had an air rower for 10 years and it died. I wanted something quieter so I would not disturb the world around me and decided to go with the Echelon Row. For the price, it is a nice rower and not having a screen is not a big deal. I like that I can put my iPad or phone there and can be good to go. The screen just isn't worth the price difference. As for the rower, it was easy to assemble - 20 to 30 mins at most. The hex key screws were a bit of a pain because of the location, but it still wasn't bad. I downloaded the app and thought it was a bit ridiculous that I could not create an account in the app. They make you go to the website and sign up, which is an attempt to make you buy a membership. The membership isn't needed, but that is up to you. Once rowing, I found it to be very quiet and it glides very smoothly (insert inappropriate adult comment here) on the track. Everything about the rower is nice except the resistance. The rower has 31 levels of resistance and I guess I became accustomed to an air rower because level 31 didn't seem like a huge challenge. Don't get me wrong, it does provide resistance and after rowing for a long period of time it does provide a challenge, but I just wish it had a little bit more. Overall, I am happy with the purchase and the fact that I can row quietly but adapting will take time. I would recommend this rower for someone who doesn't want to take out a mortgage for a high-end rower. ... show more

  • horrible initial cust service; cheap flimsy RF controller
Style: Row
3/25/22 The shortfalls are the cheap RF resistance controller. It craps out and then the rower is useless. I had problems when I received it, and again I’m having problems. Get a rower with physical/mechanical controls. Do not buy this rower. When first received: When the rower arrived, the resistance control did not work, making the entire unit useless. It's stuck on zero, and because the device uses magnetism there's no way to manually/physically adjust the amount of resistance without a working controller. After many calls and emails, I finally got them to mail me a replacement controller piece. I RECEIVED IT TWO MONTHS LATER. During those two months, I was emailing with them once a week. The replacement piece arrived, but would also not communicate with/interface with the rower. Then I emailed demanding a full refund, and for them to get this hunk of metal out of my house. Then I got someone to send me an entirely new rower (something that they had been unwilling to do in the past). The new rower arrived in about 4 days and worked perfectly. I boxed the defective unit up in that box, emailed customer service, and FedEx came and picked it up (at no cost to me). So now I've got a working rower that I like, but it took: spending $1,000 on the rower and $400 on the yearly app subscription, and about 2 1/2 months of stress dealing with the customer service department. That being said, the rower works great. Some things you should know: You have to add a device (preferably an iPad or tablet) to see any kind of readout. The resistance control will work without an iPad, but it just beeps when you go up or down; there's no way to tell what number or level you are on. With the tablet, you can see all kinds of information: resistance level, calories, distance, etc. But in a couple of weeks, doing just 20min a day, 5 days a week, I've lost about 7 pounds, so that's pretty good. ... show more

  • Great Machine, So-So App
Style: Row
Love the rower. Remarkably easy to install if you watch the installation video at the same time -- even the screws are numbered to make it easy. Rower is very solidly built. Very easy it is to adjust the tension on the fly. Feels like an excellent workout. I'm not as enthusiastic about the Echelon app, and decided not to use it after a brief period. I didn't think that the instructors were nearly as good as the instructors on the two other devices where I have subscriptions (Peloton and The Mirror) -- in terms of quality, quantity, variety, or anything else I can think of. I ended up subscribing to Apple Fitness +, which has rowing as one of many programs, and costs roughly 1/4th as much as an Echelon subscription and, at the same time, seemed like much higher quality instruction to me. You don't get the same stats, but you basically row at the same pace as the instructor, adjust the tension as appropriate for you, and monitor your heartbeat and calories to see how you're doing. Even if the costs were the same, I'd prefer the Apple Fitness + instructors, but at 1/4 the cost, I thought changing was a no-brainer. Overall, my view is it's an outstanding machine but there are better alternatives than the Echelon app. ... show more

  • The upper echelon. The upper echelon.
Style: Row S
Newly entering the rowing world. This here is certainly the upper echelon of machines. They’ve nailed it. Touch screen, Bluetooth, classes, free play. This thing has it all. Reviews were all solid. Not to mention the price was very hard to pass up.

  • Sturdy, quiet, feels durable and solid
Style: Row
Since I haven't tried cheaper models (I paid $699), it's hard to say if the build quality would be much different spending $200-$300 less, but it feels substantial and well-designed. I'm rowing 30 minutes 6x a week. Around three weeks in, the rower is performing well. The tension adjustment buttons were working sporadically, until I pushed in the battery in the handle more firmly, and it's been fine since. I like the folding design, it's not hard to move the rower around the room. Everything was packaged securely, no blemished or damaged components. Assembly wasn't too difficult, a longer wrench with a good handle would have been easier. The device holder works well holding my nude 12.9" iPad Pro (not quite wide enough to fit with the case). No review of the app or membership program, not interested in the subscription! ... show more

  • Terrible app as only display got even worse
Style: Row
The rower hardware itself is good, it works well. That's why I gave 2 stars. Otherwise I would give 0, if I could. This simple "Row" model doesn't have a display, but the free app for smartphone does the trick. However... Before my purchase in April 2024, I did some research and found out that the app has basic functional content without (totally overpriced!) membership subscriptions, including saving workout history on the phone. Even though the display layout of the app is very bad (small display of workout data, without any way to configure it differently), it still worked for me just ok and the workout history was stored, so I could review my workout progress. Every other workout equipment, even the cheapest of the cheap, provides actually a lot better display experience, but again, the rower itself is good. Then, some 6 months after my purchase, there was an update of the app, where the workout history was removed !? I exchanged emails with their tech support and was informed "...the progress shown on the ''Freestyle'' was a bug and now it is fixed, you will not be able to see it anymore. If you want to see your progress, you will need to have a membership with us...." I could not believe that such a very basic function of an already poor app was removed - and to top this, it was removed AFTER my purchase! I see this as betrayal of customers. If you feel the same, don't buy from Echelon! ... show more
