  • Has that Rotosound round wound piano like tonal quality but does not go dead after a performance
Color: Silver
I began using Rotosound round wound strings back in the 70s to get that Chris Squire style piano like tone. However a number of years ago I started finding quality problems, the details are not important. After an arduous search, I found that the DR HI-Beams were an excellent replacement for the Rotosound getting a simlar tone and they would literally last weeks rather than days. I tried using DR Sunbeams as a replacement for DR HI-Beams as a test for comfort since I was playing more than usual and the HI-Beams were tearing up my fingers. Well, let me tell you, the only difference I can tell is that the Sunbeams are a little less bright but also easier on my fingers. They also keep their tone for weeks even thought they loose the edge after a few gigs, easy enough compensate with a little boost (~1-2 dB) at about 800 & 1100 Hz. While there are LOTS of different opinions which bass strings to use and lots of different styles. But if you want that full piano like tone you get with a tight round wound string and do not want mud, you should definitely give the Sunbeams a try. I bet you will like them! ... show more

  • Breaks in nicely
Color: Silver
I've been playing bass for 20+ years and have had a lot of changing opinions on strings. I started off using Rotosound, then labella, then into my flatwound phase when I pretty much played Thostiks exclusively. As a bassist who prefers throwback and old school sounds, finding strings to use for modern/cover/wedding gigs was tough, I prefer the sound of a broken in round so I use nickel as they reach that point sooner than steel. I eventually found DR pure blues to be perfect on my passive bass but somewhat lacking on my stingray (active), as I tend to use lower action on my stingray. With the hex core you maintain higher tension than with the round core. I tried sunbeams out for the first time this summer and absolutely love them. I had them on my stingray since July and I'm about to order a new set (January) and they matured well. I keep my strings clean and these strings are just now reaching the point where I'm considering changing them, although I think I could do a few more months if I really wanted to. I play a lot of reggae and soul, and if you like worn in rounds, these mature nicely for that. The hex core really keeps the string resonate and strong throughout it's lifespan, meaning if you like the sound of old strings but are tired of your cores giving out as soon as the rounds loose their zing (rotosound, anyone?), Than these are a great option for a half year or longer playtime. ... show more

  • Was kinda disappointed.......
Color: Silver
Have used DR strings in the past (Fat-Beams) and decided to try out the Sunbeams. Ordered a set and put them on and really liked them and wanted to get a set for my other bass. Second set came and after putting them on the A string buzzed really bad and sounded detuned. Yes i bent the ends before cutting, Have used DR strings before and you gotta do this with pretty much any roundcore. Contacted DR and they said they would send out a new A string so I figured cool... Ordered a another set while waiting and experienced the SAME thing! Wasnt gonna go through the whole process again so im just sending these back and got some Fat Beams. Not sure what the problem is, Im guessing maybe just a bad batch. But I remember reading online somewhere that someone had the same experience I did. ... show more

  • The Sunbeams are the strings I compare everything else to.
Color: Silver
Been running Sunbeams 45-105 for about 6 months now on my Fender P-bass and more recently to my Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass and they sound out-of-this-world on both. I'm in a rock cover band and these strings resonate excellently in everything we do from Prince to Metallica. There's virtually no negatives with Sunbeams, great lows, bright mids and I love the tone. So far very durable and I play a lot. They're friendlier than steel to my fingers and frets. While I would still like to try some other strings, the Sunbeams have become my go-to strings that everything else gets compared to. ... show more

  • Wow!!!!! better than D'Addario
Color: Silver
I've been using D'Addario XL 170s for a long time, still love them, but the Dr's maybe even better, about 20 years ago Willie Nelson's bass player b' Spears' give me a few sets and I use them up, so it's been awhile since I used Dr's on my 4 string, and I think these are better than what they were making 20 years ago, I have been using the Marcus Miller 5 string set for a while so I should have known they would work great on a 4-string also, so far I've just tried these sunbeams on my jazz bass I'm interested to try the other versions ... show more

  • Good tone and lower tension. Excellent customer service from manufacturer DR Strings.
Color: Silver
Installed on mid 70's Rickenbacker 4001. Tension is noticeably lower than previously used Rotosound round wound 66's. Tone is very bright when first installed lowering to just a bit less than the Roto's after break in but still pleasant bite and growl. Customer service from DR Strings: I clipped the D (.65) string too close to the bend/crimp the direction show to make when trimming and could hear a little dullness in that D string compared to the others. Totally my fault. Only online source I could find for individual string would be 75% the cost of a full set after shipping so I ordered another set. I emailed DR customer service to see if single strings are available for purchase at any local retailers to avoid shipping cost and without asking they offered to send a replacement sting at no charge. Even after owning up to the trim error on my part. A+ customer service. ... show more

  • Great strings- Average value
Color: Silver
I put the Sunbeams on a Jazz bass that previously had D'Addario XL170BT's on it. What a difference. I suppose I shouldn't expect great pricing for hand wound strings. I didn't expect them to sound as good on my bass as they do. As soon as I can find them on sale I'll be getting a set for my 5 string jazz bass which will replace the current D'Addario NYXL's that are on it now. ... show more
