  • Precision
Size: 45-105
I use these on a MIM Classic 50’s Precision Bass and it nails the classic p/flats vibe. Have tried a few varieties of flats, D’Addario, Fender - those were fine but these seem to be a small step above. The gold threading looks great with two-tone sunburst, which certainly doesn’t hurt anything. If you’re flat-curious and haven’t tried them, definitely give it a shot. It’s a vibe for sure, but be prepared for it to be harder on your fingertips. I don’t think I’d run my main bass on flats (I’ve preferred half wounds, generally speaking) but I am very happy to have a second bass with these strings on, and really I find myself picking this one up just about as often. And as far as string selection, I’ll definitely be sticking with this set for my flats choice for the foreseeable future. ... show more

  • Get some old school bass tones
Size: 45-105
I have not used flatwound strings in decades...but I got an urge to get some of those 1960s and early 70s bass tones that were Carol Kaye's signature. I put this on a 4-string Fender Jazz American Deluxe....probably a late 1990s model. These strings did not disappoint. I revisited all of those old great bass lines that were so familiar and these strings helped to recreate. I got out the pick and was in heaven. It nailed those Berry Oakley tones from Whipping Post. I'll buy these again. ... show more

  • Garbage - I hope you don't play a Fender or expect to tune them.
Size: 45-105
How do you produce bass strings that don't fit the most prevalent bass on the planet? And no, I didn't buy the wrong length, and yes my instrument is in mint condition and adjusted to factory specs. The E string is slightly too long for a Fender 34 inch scale, but can still be installed. After noticing intonation was way off, I phoned the company. The very nice gentleman I spoke with told me it was probably a bad string and that the length was not a big worry, it's "close enough." The replacement string was closer intonation-wise (still off though) but the string surface itself was mangled badly like a badger had chewed it. No thanks... P.S. The saddest thing about it is the sound and feel of the "usable" strings is magnificent. ... show more

  • Can't be tuned E string
Size: 45-105
There is something strange with the E string, and I am not the only one to say this. It sounded out of tune everywhere on the neck. Fender 1982 USA Jazz Bass, properly set intonation, action and neck. Strings were properly installed. I gave one star because bass strings are expensive and this set was worthless. I bought a random set of GHS somethings and had no problem at all. These are not good, which is surprising because DR is supposed to be good, a lot of people like them. Maybe I just got a bad set. ... show more

  • No thud tone here!
Size: 45-105
I love these strings! After trying countless other brands, I've finally found a set of flats that sound and feel great! They have excellent sustain, a big fat tone with decent highs, and are as smooth as can be. Thomasik Infelds are great to, but at WAY more money. Played a gig last night with these last night, and you couldn't wipe the smile off my face! Super recommended! ... show more

  • Clear with a nice thumpy crunch!
Size: 45-105
Have tried several flatwound strings and depending on the bass you have them on, I think they are all great. (D'Addario, Rotosound and DRs, as well as Fender and Rotosound tapewound flats). I have the DR "Legends" on a '54 style P Bass, with one single coil pickup. The DRs are the best on this bass, for the crunchy percussive sound like Carl Radle had on JJ Cale's 'Naturally' album. I'd tried D'Addario previously and they weren't right for this (but they really rock on my G&L SB2). The thing the DRs have over other flats is they are so flexible and have a lower tension. They also have a clear finish, so while they are nice and thumpy as flatwound should be they also have this clear as a bell tone. So they have great presence and such a great feel you just can't stop playing them. A friend who played my '54 Pbass, who's been playing for more than 30 years and a 'flats man', said they reminded him of his LaBellas which are his strings of choice on his 60's Jazz. I'm going to test the DRs across three flatwound basses I have with other brand flats. Need to get some GHS Precision Flats for the test. But I have the feeling that the DRs will be the best overall flatwound. ... show more

  • Love these DRs, but....
Size: 45-105
Man I wish I could give these 5 stars, but I have experienced one problem with them....the audience will never notice, of course, but I can hear a distinct tonal difference between the E and the other 3 strings. The A and the D especially are FANTASTIC!! Best strings I've ever played, I can't wait to plug in my FrankenPbass and hear that tone! But then the E is noticeably "tinnier", "weaker", not exactly "duller" (I love the adjectives we bassists come up with), but less satisfying....the E almost sounds hollow. I've tried 4 or 5 E strings from various other sets to see if I could find a better match, but no luck....they all sound too bright and "piano-ey" compared to the DR A and D strings....which, again, I LOVE! ... show more

  • E has issues. Otherwise excellent.
Size: 45-105
As others have mentioned here and on different sites, the E doesn't seem to match the set. The tone is different to the point that it can sound out of tune when you move among strings. This is much more noticeable in active mode than passive, so it still (kind of) works when I have the tone rolled off. It also has strange intonation issues. I set my bass up so I'm a solid E open and on fret 12. When I play open and then first five frets, I'll see E / F (slightly flat) / F# / G (slightly sharp) / G# / A (slightly flat). I always do a tight crimp before clipping, so I don't believe it has a slipped core. Having said that, both the feel and the sound of ADG are fantastic. I haven't decided yet if I'll try to get a replacement E, or if I'll just go back to D'Addario XL Chromes. ... show more
