First off, I’m thrilled that it works beautifully. My grandson is thrilled with his new metal detector 👏 I’m also thrilled that it came with a User Guide which stated on the front the customer service number and a “if it doesn’t work call …”👍 (my last two metal detector purchases had no such help) and other offers. There is also the offer for a warranty and it came with a very well made canvass over the shoulder bag with “excavation” tools😁. I got this for my grandson and he had fun at the beginning, then it stopped working and not picking things up, so my son got him a better quality detector. If you want a bargain detector for a child, to have a bit of fun, this will work well enough.

I've never used a metal detector before this, but was trying to think of something creative for my 8 year old's birthday gift. He has so many toys that don't get played with, and they all basically do the same thing anyways. I wanted to get him something to get him outdoors exploring more. Since I think I was even more eager than he was to see if it worked, I skipped reading the directions altogether and just started walking around with it. It was very simple to understand that beeping and colored lights meant there was some sort of metal found. I actually didn't ever get around to reading the instructions, but my guess is that each color represents a different type of metal. He doesn't really care to get into that much detail, he (and I) just like walking around searching for "pirate" treasure...so far, nothing of value, but fun just the same. There are a few times when it has indicated a find, but we did not find anything. I'm thinking maybe it was buried deeper than we cared to dig. (The first thing he found was rebar under the cement slab, which to his dismay, I told him we could not dig to!) I should add that my son is special needs, and he had no issues with grasping the basic concept of how to work this. I like that it was not frustrating to use straight out of the box. I'm sure it will be more fun when I actually learn to work the more detailed functions. Seems rugged, considering he left it out in the pouring rain all night without me realizing it. Be aware it is not ready for use instantly on power up; it has to stabilize first. The first few times I turned it on, I thought it was broken; it looked like a slot machine with the beeping and flashing all different colors of lights constantly, despite being held in the air away from any metal. I don't know if it just had to warm up, or I had some kind of local interference, or I just did something differently, but trying again a few hours later got better results. I gave it to my 9-yo to try in the front yard and she quickly found two lengths of thin metal rod (4- or 5-gauge wire?) formed into V shapes about 1" down, which had clearly been there a while. Maybe lost pieces of a mole trap. Not the treasure chest she'd had in mind, but it was a discovery. I tried in the back yard and I found one rusty nail. If you turn it on with the coil near the ground, sensitivity will be adjusted down and it may stabilize better. It can detect a nickel on the surface from a few inches away. We have wet mineralized soil; likely it works better on dry sandy soils. I am not availing myself of a printed offer included with the product, which may affect the quantity and content of what you read here. ... show more

So far it's a bit frustrating for a kid to use because it picks up EVERYTHING. The pinpoint isn't very accurate either. It's lightweight and the indications are fairly easy to read.

Update: dec2021 honestly not worth the money I literally planted items in my yard and places and would not get a signal at all. Yet would get a signal when actually nothing was there. Dug huge holes even sifted the dirt. Ok so I confess I’m a adult and I bought this for me. I wanted something lightweight and easy to use since I tire easily . The weight on this is perfect for kids or anyone with arm or wrist problems . I will probably add me a little strap also to carry . Assembly is as easy as 1:2:3. The instructions are simple to read and understand as well. It’s not over complicated. It comes ready to go with a battery included. (9v)for the kids it has some cute pirate stickers as for the size, I am 5’ 4 and find it easy to work with for my height . Will be testing it in various places since where I live the ground seems to be loaded with iron. That’s the only signal I got . Also a white powder seems to rub off of the handle onto your hands. 5’ 4 is the max height you would want to go and it does get a little uncomfortable after a short period of time on the hand. I will try wrapping it with a soft or gripping vet tape. ... show more
