    • Surprisingly Good Metal Detector!
First of all, I am beginning detectorist. I did a lot of research. After reading a bunch of reviews and watching a lot of online videos about a bunch of different devices I decided to give this machine a shot. I am not at all disappointed. I am a big "bang for your buck" kind of guy. This thing has the most high end features and best reviews that I could find in this price range. If you want a good starter detector and don't want to spend a ton of money, this is your machine. Relax and buy it. You'll be happy with it. For a more detailed review, keep reading. I received my MT-XR a few weeks ago. It was super easy to assemble and seems well made. It is really lightweight and easy to swing for extended periods of time without your arm getting too tired. The aluminum (?) tubing seems strong and the cam locks are sturdy. I put mine together in about 5 minutes. My only qualm is that the 9v battery connector is the old 80's "lanyard" type and not a drop-in style, but even that connetor seems sturdier than normal. My first test was in my backyard. I turned it on and almost immediately it found an old nail about 4-5 inches down. After finding 2 or 3 more nails I figured it worked well enough to take with me on vacation to the beach. Out on the beach, I first tried it down on the wet sand with everything wide open (sensitivity up all the way, looking for all metal types). It went a little bonkers. I used the discrimination feature to get rid of ferrous metals and that helped a lot, but I still got a lot of false positives, so I turned down the sensitivity. That helped a little, too. I decided to give the dry sand a try because I had heard that wet sand can cause some interference with detectors. The dry sand really made a difference! I still discriminated out the ferrous metals, set the sensitivity down a notch from the top and after that I was finding all sorts of coins, can tabs, matchbox cars, etc. While I didn't find any gold rings or diamond necklaces, I think I might have if I had stuck with it long enough. Overall, it was a great first experience. Tips: Play around with the settings until your false positives are at a minimum. Try to not brush the sand with the sensor ring - it makes it sound off all kinds of crazy stuff. Hold he ring down to the ground before turning the unit on - it helps with the automatic ground balancing and minimizes false positives. If you get a signal, go over the same patch of ground several times before digging - this will verify something is there and save you from unneeded digging. Get a pack of rechargeable 9v batteries with a charger - they are about 20 bucks for 4 batteries and will pay for themselves many times over. Get the Dr. Otek Pin Pointer - That little thing works great, plus, DR Otek sends you a 15% off coupon that you can use towards it. Pros: Inexpensive Well Built Lightweight Works Well Lots of High-end Features Battery life is pretty long (at least 3-4 hours) Cons: The arm strap is a little too small The 9v connector is a little flimsy The learning curve is a little steep, but once you get used to it, it works great Not too great on wet sand (so far - maybe I need to figure out better settings) Summary: I think I made a great choice. First, let me say that I have no previous experience with metal detectors. My new Dr.Otek MT-XR metal detector was delivered earlier today. It was very well packaged and arrived in perfect, undamaged condition. After unpacking it, I scanned through the owner's manual, quickly, and then assembled it. Assembly was dead simple and took less than ten minutes. Very easy. Then, I read the part of the manual dealing with operating the metal detector, which was clear and easy to understand. I then took the detector outside. I live on a dirt road in a rural area. I started sweeping the detector over the ground and started getting signals right away. After less than ten minutes of "learning", I decreased the sensitivity, a little bit and started searching. From what I've read, no metal detector is 100% correct, all the time, in the visual and audio indications that are given for type of metal / object and depth it is seeing. That said, I found the MT-XR to be pretty accurate. And, this is where the "learning process" comes in. Once you get familiar with the detector's responses and tones and the manner in which they occur, it really is accurate. Attached is a photo of 16 "treasures" that I dug up in about 45 minutes, including the learning curve time. The pinpoint mode is fairly accurate and narrows down the location of items pretty well. Not as good as a small, handheld pinpointer, I think, but pretty good and helpful. I'll probably eventually buy a pinpointer to use with the MT-XR. I'm really impressed with and happy that I bought the MT-XR. I'm going to spend a little more time honing my skills with the detector, and then I'll take it to some old collapsed cabins, in the mountains, that were associated with some really old, abandoned mines. Hopefully, I'll find some real "treasures", then. For the $100 price range, of the MT-XR, I feel that it's a very good metal detector. I know that there are plenty of more expensive metal detectors out there, some up into the four figure range. Are they better? For the much higher prices, I hope they are. On the other hand, often times better is subjective and / or niche usage based. Anyway, from what I've seen, so far, I'm sure that the MT-XR will be great, for my intended use and I'm really looking forward to putting it to use out in the real world. If you've been wanting to get a metal detector and try your hand at the hobby, I feel that the MT-XR is a great choice. Happy hunting! ... show more
