  • Great little heater, $50 or more cheaper on Amazon than through local retailers including the well-known big box stores!
Style: Nightstand Design
I seldom rate items this early (only had it about a week now) and in fact, I rarely rate items at all. But I know that it's cold out there (at least in the North East), and many people are probably shopping for a portable heater to supplement their heating needs. So, I'm giving this product a 5-star out-of-the-box review and sharing my enthusiasm for this great little heater. I'll revise this review latter as I can comment on its durability and other features relevant to its long-term use. Side-by-side, this style heater puts out a lot more 'heat' than do the physically smaller, 1500-watt wire-element type portable heaters. It uses a type of dual heating system that includes a method similar to radiant heat, although I'm not totally sold that much of its actual heating capacity is actually infrared-type heading. Nonetheless, it performs remarkably well and I purchased two very similar models apparently made by different branches of the same parent company -- basically the same heater with different cabinets and slightly different controls. They both function admirably, and I recommend them to anyone in the market for this type of heater. I use this heater as the primary heat source for the third-level of my home where I have basically turned off the zone heating for that area. The upper level consists of bedrooms and a large bathroom, and using these types of space heaters (a separate electric heater in the bathroom) has dramatically reduced my monthly heating bills for the past several years. This year, I treated myself (and my little "puppy girls" who sleep with me in our 400 square-foot master bedroom upstairs) to supplemental heat to keep the room in the low 60's as opposed to the mid- to upper-50's where the spill-over heat from the other heating zones manage to passively heat the room. It has certainly made reading in bed at night much more pleasant and even my "girls" appreciate the difference. The heat-output grill does not get hot enough to pose a hazard to my curious little girls, although the blast of heat is strong enough that I keep it at least 7 or 8 feet away pointing towards to lower end of my bed. Hitting me in the face at night is too strong and looses much of the reason for selecting this type of heater which tends to provide a more 'level' heating experience in the room. The thermostat seems to work well and the unit cycles on-and-off surprisingly little, Still, the room stays comfortably warm at the selected low temperature. One of the reasons that I selected the models that I purchased was because the thermostats can be set as low as 50 degrees, and this is very useful for applications where minimal heating is desired. I plan on adding solar radiant heat to my master bedroom eventually and presuming this heater last forever I will repurpose it to another location where I wish to keep the room temperature around 50 degrees. Of course I realize that most products don't seem to last today like they did years back, but the solid construction and simple principle of operation make me optimistic that this is an investment in long-term heating and not just a short-term solution that will last only a heating season or two. If it does fail after a couple of years, I will be very disappointed and revise my review accordingly. (We all have are own opinions on the subject of product longevity, but I believe "make it right, make it last" and am too old to change my orientation now except for extremely cheap products that I consider more-or-less disposable.) For those of you who are expecting this little heater to heat an entire house or apartment, get real. This is a 1500-watt electric heater which is only slightly more than 5,000 BTUs -- that's a very small heater for heating anything except a reasonably well insulated room. Sorry, but what you may want (an inexpensive, relatively low-wattage heater that warms an entire home) doesn't exist because of the laws of physics. Please keep in mind that while electricity is considered by most to be a renewable energy source (despite the fact that most electricity is generated from fossil fuels), the cost per BTU (i.e., heating unit) is usually MUCH greater for electric than for natural-gas heat production. So if you're requiring a primary heating source, look into alternatives. If, on the other hand, you're looking for an easily transportable, supplemental heater, then this is the ticket. Running constantly at full output this heater would consume 36 kilowatts per day. If your paying 12 cents per kilowatt, that's $4.32 per day maximum operating cost. On a monthly basis, you could increase you're electric bill by up to $129.60 (remember, this is presuming that your utility rate is $0.12 per kilowatt or less). Of course it won't be running 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and for those of you who are decreasing the heating requirement on your primary heating system, further savings will be had by the decrease in cost for running your central heating system. This is where the cost savings comes in for me and it's considerable at over $100 per month to heat the upper zone alone. (And it helps save the planet too -- my electricity is generated from the hydroelectric facility at Niagara Falls!) I have a second unit in our family room primarily occupied by my wife who is now resting at a comfortable 69 degrees, while most of that heating zone is set at only 65 degrees and lower depending on the time-of-day. Again, a considerable savings because the primary heating system works less often. Everybody's happy; my wife is nice and toasty and my (our) heating bill is reduced considerably. ... show more

  • Great heater
Style: Portable
I decided to put it on a little stand and not use the legs. Very easy to use. It worked and started to heat immediately. Very different heat. Very warm. Too warm. I usually try to heat my room to 70. I am older now and like it a little warmer. But cannot afford to turn on my entire house a/c heat strip. Electric bill was outrageous. I always used my propane fireplace. After the old one going bad and having carbon monoxide poisoning twice, i bought a new one . Well, $2000 later, the installer did something wrong and carbon monoxide poisoning again, the logs were buring. I had them take it out. But there was nothing like the heat of fire. The heat strip forced air just didnt warm up the house. It just blows air through the cold air. I never felt warm. I installed an electric fire place heater with a beautiful fake fireplace. It is great for spring and fall, but not for temps below 35. The house heater would turn on when the temperature in the house went below 65. Or else the house would never be able to warm up again . The fireplace could heat it right away, but not now. And i would keep the house on 59 at night. That is why i tried this little infrared hybred heater. It was wonderful last night. At 70, my living room/kitchen go too hot. I felt warm, not just the air around me. Set at 65 last night, I saw it go off and on. Test itself. Kept the room perfect. I sleep in the living room . In the morning, it was not freezing cold, the room temperature shows 68, the machine 65. Objects feel warmer, like my house phone. It is very plesant. The area i am heating is about 400 sq ft. Very comfortable. If i need to take a shower and go to the bedroom, I'll turn on the house heat, but thats only for a little while. I will try to turn this machine up and see how far this heat will travel through my little 1000 sq ft house . But for now, im just testing where i mainly stay and closing off the 3 rooms i don't use . It is quiet, there was never an original burn off odor, directions are easy to follow. I used ECO mode. The stand i used was so it was a little higher off the floor and i believe to make it more steady. Lets see how it does throughout the winter here in the mountains of NC. So far, i like it and not a bad price . ... show more

  • Keeps family room warm
Style: Portable
We purchased this product to avoid using our furnace in Florida for heat. Its great at isolating a room (family room, bedroom, etc) to keep warm. It has no problem keeping our family room warm at 70 degrees F. Great product.
