  • Nintendo’s Most Joyfully Destructive Platformer in Years
Platform: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: Game only
Donkey Kong Bananza feels like Nintendo looked at the idea of a platformer and asked, “What if movement itself was the toy?” The result is one of the most creative and purely fun games I’ve played in a long time. From the first hour, the game radiates personality. The animations are expressive, the environments are packed with detail, and the sheer physicality of Donkey Kong’s movement makes everything feel satisfying. Jumping, climbing, smashing through terrain, and tearing apart the environment never stopped being entertaining. There’s a constant sense that the world is reacting to you instead of simply existing around you. What really elevates the game is how inventive the level design becomes. Nintendo constantly introduces new mechanics, twists, and environmental interactions without letting the experience grow stale. Every new area feels like the developers asking themselves how much more creativity they can squeeze out of the core gameplay loop. The game trusts experimentation, and because of that, exploration feels rewarding rather than mandatory. On the Nintendo Switch 2, performance was smooth throughout my time with the game. The visuals are vibrant without losing clarity during chaotic moments, and the larger-scale destruction sequences are genuinely impressive. Load times were quick, controls felt responsive, and the entire experience carried that signature Nintendo polish where everything simply feels good to play. What surprised me most was how much charm the game has beyond the mechanics. There’s an infectious sense of joy running through the entire experience. It understands that games are supposed to be playful, and it fully commits to that idea without irony or restraint. Overall, Donkey Kong Bananza is one of the strongest platformers Nintendo has released in years. It’s inventive, energetic, polished, and consistently fun in a way that reminds you why Nintendo’s first-party games remain so beloved. If you own a Switch 2 and enjoy platformers even remotely, this is absolutely worth playing. ... show more

  • Best Platformer Ever
Platform: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: Game only
I have been gaming for 30 years and I have never played a platformer this fun and addicting. Generally people say Mario Galaxy, Mario Odyssey, and Astro Bot are the best, and I am happy to say this is better than all of them. You explore various maps looking for crystal banana's, similar to Mario games where you look for stars, shine sprites, and moons. Instead of jumping around to solve puzzles, you can smash essentially any object in this game and that opens up a whole new world in terms of exploration and gameplay. DK is a beast and you can smash through stone, dirt, sand, wood, and so much more. The world is yours to explore and to destroy. While tearing through the land, you will discover hidden paths and loot that you will be addicted to finding. Its like they took the best of everything Mario and threw in some Zelda and DK Country love to make the perfect platforming game. You can climb almost any surface and pick up chunks of the ground to smash things with it or even turf surf with it. There is even some transformations that allow you to smash more, run faster, and even fly. This is freedom on another level from Nintendo. Visuals and sound are great. Majority of time the game runs 60fps but it will hit occasional drops, but not often. The worst is when you look at the map for some reason. Its real time and shows all of your destruction in a 3D model so I get that it can be taxing but it tanks the FPS to 30 for sure. You will not be in the map much, so I wouldn't sweat it. Visually the maps are all distinct and look great. You get real 90's Rare vibes from it all and old and new fans will appreciate it. Graphics are really great but Nintendo using FSR 1, which is old tech at this point is kind of silly. The Switch 2 can use a DLSS which would have been optimal for this game. Lastly, the sound effects are great and the music is good. Is it DK country good? No, but the music fits this game well. I have played Expedition 33, Death Stranding 2, and various other games this year and DK is better than all of them. This is my Game of the Year and if Nintendo can top this on the Switch 2, then we may be in for the best Nintendo console generation ever. 10 out of 10 for me. ... show more

  • Amazing platformer to show off the hardware capabilities of the Switch 2
Platform: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: Game only
I purchased the game alongside the Switch 2, and I've been extremely pleased with it. I find myself starting it in handheld mode and before I know it, it's time to charge my switch or put it in the dock and continue playing on my PC monitor with the joycon grip, extremely easy for me to sink hours into. It's an awesome platforming game with an interesting story, albeit a lack of flexibility with the difficulty system. (There are only two difficulty presets available; assisted mode and normal, so if you're looking for an extreme combat challenge this isn't it. Or you'll have to self impose restrictions.) It heavily rewards exploration and taking your time, with secrets hidden everywhere in each area of the game, so of course if you rush through and only focus on the main objectives you will find the content for the price insufficient. All in all, 10/10 game for me to first experience the true hardware capabilities of the system; and bonus points for it being a physical vs digital copy, as I'll likely only play the story once I can trade the game in or sell it towards my next one. ... show more

  • A "rare" return to form for the series.
Platform: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: Game only
Get ready to swing through the jungle like a seasoned pro in "Donkey Kong Bananza," where collecting bananas and clobbering Kremlings will leave a permanent smile on your face. This game is a heartfelt tribute to Rare's golden era, a time when platformers reigned supreme and every new level promised an exhilarating adventure. From the moment "Bananza" boots up, you're engulfed in a wave of nostalgia more potent than a supercharged barrel blast. The vibrant visuals, instantly catchy tunes, and brilliantly conceived level design echo the beloved "Donkey Kong Country" series, yet it all feels wonderfully fresh and consistently exciting. It's as if Rare and Nintendo collaborated to create a new masterpiece, and the result is an unstoppable, banana-loving force of nature. The controls are as precise as Donkey Kong's tie, making every jump, roll, and ground pound feel incredibly satisfying. And the humor? "Bananza" is packed with more laughs than a barrel full of monkeys, from subtle visual gags to surprisingly witty dialogue. You'll find yourself grinning like a chimpanzee who's just stumbled upon an entire new bunch of bananas. The characterization of the side characters and the main characters, especially Pauline is really well done. "Donkey Kong Bananza" isn't just a game; it's a vibrant, hilarious, and utterly captivating journey back to the glory days of platforming. If you're seeking a game that hits every nostalgic note, channels the best of the Nintendo-Rare days, and is more fun than a barrel of monkeys, then "Bananza" is your perfect pick. Just be warned: you might start dreaming in bananas. ... show more

  • Excellent single player game!! Lots of freedom & exploration
Platform: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: Game only
I’ve really enjoyed DK Banaza - being able to destroy the environment gives the player a lot of freedom & an extra sense of exploration on top of a game that’s already designed to very much satisfy that need. I’ve beat the game 3 times now, so I’m less impressed by the time I’m leaving this review, however it is currently the only real single player game available on the switch 2 (& made exclusively for the switch 2). This game has a lot to offer for players of all ages. I’ve enjoyed it as an adult, but I’m certain children love it probably even more. Which, I love exploration in games, so I love it a lot myself. Hope we see more games soon, but this is an excellent release from Nintendo. Developed by the Mario Odyssey team, who are very talented. Lots of hidden passageways & treasures, and a strong attention to detail. Ie, my video attached to this: you can throw soft material (dirt, sand, etc.) at fractones & it alters their body shape haha. It’s like the most pointless, satisfying little detail, I love it. DK Bananza is nominated for Game of The Year (GOTY), and is deserving of that nomination. It is extremely unlikely that it will win, being up against Expedition 33 & Silksong, but it is certainly worthy of the nominee, & is the best single player game currently available on Switch 2 without a doubt. ... show more
