  • some care and usage tips after 1.5y solid runtime some care and usage tips after 1.5y solid runtime
before I start, it's 5 stars from me - love this unit and I'm returning right now to buy a replacement. More on that below. Included some photos so you can see how the gunk will build inside the unit - gunk can build up exactly where the motor tries to breath! So I did my very best addressing this with some tips below. some care and usage tips after 1.5y solid runtime: - regularly CLEAN THE VENT HOLES for the motor at the head of the unit - it needs to breath. Use Qtips, for example, and perform these maintenances before or after EVERY RUN to keep the gunk from getting "pushed" in further by more gunk. - Edit: Turns out a WIRE BRUSH is enough 99% of the time. QTips not needed. I've been doing it *before* runs when the gunk buildup is dry. When I look into the vent holes, I can see this is doing a good job. Convenient, fast, and easy to do. - Mind that these small vent holes (at the top of the motorhead) are AIR INTAKES - so they attract material into the holes via negative air pressure (ie. slight vacuum). The larger holes below are exhausts - don't need to worry about those, they don't collect gunk buildup because they blow air out. - the vacuum effect is not too big of a problem, by the way - the intake vent hole vacuum isn't that strong. You could go 3 heavy runs without the vents getting too clogged - just depends on the nature of the runs. Just have to keep an eye on it, and have to consider running a wirebrush over it before every run - that's a good and easy maintenance. - the motor on this unit is down at the end of the pole, for that reason you might want to STICK TO DRY CONDITIONS with this unit - DO NOT WASH the head of the unit with water - use a wire brush - avoid sweeping the tool deep in bunches or piles of cuttings or other material (such as grass you just cut, where you want to make a 2nd, lower sweep to cut farther down) - that is a source of the "gunk" that can get in the vent holes. - combining the logic of some advice above: EVENING HOURS when its both dry and cooler are the best times to make runs. - as you would expect, this brushless motor can BURN OUT if you really push it. --- take some breaks especially during the hottest days --- don't just swap 5AH batteries in back-to-back without letting that motor cool off some --- sometimes the batteries get hot, and will prevent the unit from running - THATS GOOD (if annoying sometimes) - now listen: we can prevent the battery from making this decision by simply holding the trigger for a long time. THATS BAD, DONT DO THAT. LET THE UNIT REST. If the battery does this, and you feel like the motor shouldn't be running too hot (ie. you've been keeping gunk from the vent holes, ambient temp is avg or low, etc), then *maybe* it's an OK time to swap batteries just for a bit so you can keep working - the batteries do heat up faster than the motor. EDIT: I read that the motor also has heat sensors which will prevent the unit from running. In that case, it seems the point stands: - *Do* regularly let off the trigger to see if the unit wants to take a break. - just saying it one last time... It seems very important that the vent holes remain unobstructed by gunk, to help the motor stay cool. - It also seems that operators in more humid climates should take extra care, because very dry material, or conditions, won't lead to "gunking up" in the vent holes as deleteriously - although, plants generally are wet when cut. Apply discretion. - Dewalt probably wouldn't recommend this, but after maybe 1y of solid use, you might open it up to get Qtips farther in and keep the passageways unobstructed. Note: start unscrewing from the head back - the neck doesn't need unscrewed. - dont forget the high/low setting. Low will generate less heat, and low does great work when set against "easier targets". On the same token, if you use low against heavier targets, you'll end up running longer trying to wear the targets down, and it'll make more of a mess which means more gunk to obstruct the vent holes, and negate the efficiency of using low - so HIGH is better against those targets. EDIT: I've been just running on "low" lately with the new unit, and using dewalt's own .08 string .. why did I ever do anything different? Just run on low with their .08 string, it works great. The string is small and "cuts". - going to recommend sticking with dewalt's advice to only run their .08 line - that is what it is designed for and the longevity of the motor should take priority over the reasoning for using different string - not 100% sure on this, but I imagine (and from experience it does seem like) allowing the string out more often toward the 14" radius will help with many of the points above. The string travels at a higher MPH out farther from the head, cuts better, and the cuts are creating gunk at more of a distance from the motor. So that sounds like win-win right? I suppose so. EDIT: the string length does make the motor work a lil harder. Apply your own discretion. My situation: I let the head's vent holes get a bit cloggy and now I'm back to buy a 2nd unit (because I like this product so much). Basically I burned the motor out by running on high setting for 2 entire 5AH charges back-to-back (yes, I violated all my tips above) and it just died and wont start now. Dewalt does offer a "fixed in $79" guarantee via their website, but I figure after taxes and buying packing and everything I'd be out $110. So why not pay the extra $50 and get a brand new one. Won't be making the same mistake again. Might also be more careful about banging it to draw the string out ... don't want to bang it too hard - that trimmer head has electrical board & wiring in it! Not that I ever abused the unit too much ... or so I thought. Anyway, $160 for 1.5y of using this unit, for how light and convenient it is, and how quiet it is, and considering how much I used it, and the heavy jobs I set it on ... I'm too enamored to go without it, and getting a replacement. ... show more

  • Great DeWalt trimmer, capable of heavy grass! Great DeWalt trimmer, capable of heavy grass!
Tool works great and cuts through grass well on the LO speed setting. I've covered about 1,000 square feet of grass on the first day and it works great! I've only had to use the HI speed on tough grass. This trimmer also eats through batteries like no ones business, and I definitely recommend buying the tool and battery combo, with the proper XR battery. I drained two four amp hour and one two amp hour normal 20 volt Max batteries before I ran out of the 20 feet of trimmer line, so I definitely recommend the XR battery or the new Powerpack for this trimmer for long hard jobs! Overall, amazing tool, and lighter then my old gasoline trimmer, I can use this all day... apart from battery swaps. ... show more

  • Very Impressive!
Holy Crud! I had an earlier Dewalt 20v trimmer that I loved but after 10 years was done. This thing is a animal! So much more power even on low. Very comparable to a larger gas trimmer, but no smell, gas and starts every time!

  • This is a great trimmer but may not be for everybody
This is very powerful trimmer. When running at full speed the only sound is the singing of the trimmer cord and it doesn't grunt in thick grass and small woodies. It is louder than I expected but nowhere near as loud as a gas powered trimmer. I can still operate it early on a Sunday morning with no worries about waking up the neighborhood. I bought a version that does not come with a battery because I have several DeWalt tools that came with the battery this requires. The interchangeability concept is brilliant - a deal maker when I saw this on Amazon. I already had two of the batteries that came with other DeWalt tools. I've read about the balance of this trimmer on other reviews and I agree that the ergonomics aren't great. This does not need a folding hinge right where the handle should be and the balance is off because the motor is in the trimming head as opposed to on the handle where the battery goes. The motor is heavier than the battery and being at the end of a long shaft it can tire your forearm when holding it up for an extended period of time. For comparison it is heavier than my Stihl FS072 gas trimmer which is also well balanced. The interchangeable batteries, trimming power, and low noise level are selling points. The poor ergonomics and balance are acceptable for the amount of trimming I have to do but could be a deal breaker for someone with more than 30-40 minutes of trimming. If DeWalt could address those cons I would give this 5 stars. ... show more

  • Powerful Weed trimmer
Great battery powered weed trimmer. Bought this unit as I already own the DeWalt Batteries. It arrived well packaged. Very light assembly to use it, just attatch the handle and the guard with a few screws. Only used it once and pretty light stuff but it ran well and seems like it would still cut through heavier weeds as well. Folds up for easier storage but still has a long reach when using it. Built solid. One minor thing it is a little hard to open and close, hoping it gets easier with a little more use. ... show more

  • Great cordless string trimmer.
This string trimmer is heavier than the previous trimmer I had but man does it cut. It cuts as well as a gas powered trimmer but is easier to use.

  • Voltage is so over rated
I love this weed eater. I’m coming from a craftsman 60 volt that i also loved but the battery took a crap and they are no longer made. Before purchasing the dewalt i bought a Greenworks 17” 40 volt that came with an 8ah battery. I bought the Greenworks specifically because it was the only cordless electric steering trimmer i could find that used 0.105” line. 0.080” and 0.095” line just don’t cut it in my yard, pun intended. I have a little over a half acre and it gets overran with mustard plant in the spring. I liked the Greenworks however the one i received had a terrible vibration to it and the fact it was $320 was enough for me to turn it. I was going to buy the dewalt 60 volt string trimmer that was attachment capable for the same price as the Greenworks until i saw a review for this 20 volt that confirmed for me that the head would in fact accept 0.105” and this one is half the price and i already have a ton of 20 volt and flex volt dewalt batteries. So this one was delivered today, one day earlier than expected and i opened it up the second i got home from work. Right off the bat i could tell this dewalt string trimmer is build better than the green works. The plastics are off a higher quality and the handle has a nice rubberized grip. My only gripe with this weed eater is the guard is pretty small. It didn’t seem like i was getting hit with too much more than the others but it was more. Now for the fun part. This weed eater is advertised as a 14”. That doesn’t really work for me so i remade the cutter for the string with an additional 1” offset out of some stainless steel sheet metal i had laying around. Now the cutting swath is a little over 16” and with 0.105” line the trimmer has no problem keeping up with my 60 volt craftsman or the 40 volt Greenworks. I’ve also used a friends 80 volt greenworks and i would choose this dewalt over it as well. Half the price and every bit as good performance. I’m stoked to say the least. And with a 9ah/3ah flex volt battery i trimmed my front yard and the battery still shows full bars. None of the other trimmers I’ve mentioned could do that. With or without a little customization this 20 volt Max string trimmer really is a gem. I’m so glad i gave it a shot. ... show more

  • Good trimmer that could've been a great trimmer
Trimmer has plenty of battery life with a 5.0aH battery. Included trimmer line works well with grass and small brush. I bought this to use in remote area on my property instead of packing my gas-powered Stihl brush cutter around. First con is it is not balanced very well. The U-shaped handle needs to be right where the hinge is. You end up having to pull up with handle with your arm bent and pushing down with your trigger hand which can be tiresome after a half hour of use. Second issue is the trimmer line feed is extremely sensitive. Given the trimmer is nose heavy you are constantly bumping the trimmer head against the ground inadvertently. I ended up buying some 5/8" SAE washers and shimming the "bump" spring for more tension to make trimmer feed more deliberate. Like so many products today they seem like they were designed by someone sitting in an office chair and looked good on paper, but when you actually use them, they have a number of annoying quarks that could have been easily solved. ... show more
