Description

This book is designed to be a complement to regular textbooks on the subject matter, for use in senior design undergraduate courses in civil/environmental engineering programs. The usual prerequisites for such courses are an introductory environmental engineering course and a first course in fluid mechanics. Senior civil/environmental engineering students taking a course on Design of Water and Wastewater Treatment Systems are also expected to have a basic understanding of statistics and a good handling of Microsoft Excel. This book includes the class notes used by the author for more than forty years of teaching this course as well as the detailed solution of more than 120 solved practical design problems, which emphasize the application of Microsoft Excel tools, such as Solver, Goal Seek and the NORMDIST function for the solution of simultaneous non-linear equations and non-linear regression analysis problems frequently encountered in the field. Also included is a simplified activated sludge model that can be solved using Microsoft Excel Solver, which considers the interaction between the settling tank performance and the aeration basin. Each chapter includes a bullet summary of the main topics covered, followed by solved examples addressing design issues encountered in the field. Read more
