De'Longhi gets the job done.
This is our second heating season with this radiator and we are quite surprised with it's ability to heat a fairly large area. The radiator is used in a small house with a cathedral ceiling, loft bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom and first floor bedroom, an area of approximately 800 square feet. There is a fan in the cathedral ceiling which gently pushes the rising heat downward, dispersing heat throughout the house. We have other heating sources, a propane heating system and wood stove, but the De'Longhi allows us to warm the living area longer into the winter season before turning to our other heating sources. We live in northern New England and the winters can be extreme here. This radiator will keep the house at a comfortable temperature even down to 30* F. We like the built in thermostat which is a simple dial that you can adjust when the temperature is at a level you wish to maintain. The radiator will then click on when more heat is needed and click off when the room has reached the desired temperature. There is also a built in timer that you can set manually that will turn the radiator on or off at any desired time you wish. We have not noticed a big difference in our electric bill, as this is just one oil filled radiator, not a house with baseboard heat run on electricity. One reviewer was not happy with the crackling sound the radiator makes when it starts up from cold. This lasts for about five minutes, only on initial startup and we do not find it intrusive. I don't know why this occurs. We have another De'Longhi which I purchased 32 years ago and is still running fine, that does not make this noise. If you are looking for an oil filled radiator to provide supplemental heat, the De'Longhi warrants consideration. ... show more

I love this heater!
I think it's important to set the right expectations with an electric radiator. It's not going to heat a room up nearly as quickly as a ceramic style heater. It just won't. If you're looking for instant heat, then take a hard pass on this style of heater. But, one thing that an electric radiator does really well is providing consistent heat. My experience with ceramic style heaters is that the room heats up fast, but once the heater shuts off due to the internal thermostat, it's a bit of "cool then hot, repeat" scenario. Conversely, once the room heats up, a radiator (at least in my experience) seems to provide a more consistent temperature. I don't "feel" the temperature swings nearly as much with an electric radiator. With that bit of reasoning out of the way, this is a fantastic radiator. I actually own three DeLonghi radiators and this one has been the best in terms of overall heat output. I don't know if it's the "patented thermal chimneys", but this radiator puts out some serious heat. I can hold my hand about four feet above and feel the warmth radiate from the top. It's better than my other two DeLonghi's (same wattage), which were about the same price when I purchased them. The other feature I really like, and I wasn't sure that I would, is the manual timer. Once I figured out how it worked (I felt a bit foolish when it's as simple as pins 'in' to heat) I saw the beauty in the design. You can set it up a fairly detailed schedule and do so far faster than the digital timers on my other DeLonghi's. Plus, unplugging/power outage doesn't mean you have to reset everything. Just turn the dial to the correct time and your schedule stays intact. Simple, easy, and brilliant in its implementation. I will note that DeLonghi states that this radiator is "best for medium to large rooms that need constant heat". I'm not sure what qualifies as a medium to large room, but if you're pushing past DeLonghi's recommendation of 144 square feet you might be disappointed. I'm heating a small office (approximately 120 square feet) and it works very, very well. I have it set on 3 (out of 6) on the medium power option, it's 28 degrees outside, and I'm comfortable. I haven't tried this DeLonghi in our larger living room, but my other two DeLonghis just didn't heat that space. Hence my guess that 144 sq ft is a good baseline of what you can expect for consistent warmth. The only quibble I have is that I wish the LED lights on the front would shut off when not heating. In other words, I can't tell when the radiator is actually heating. It's not a big deal, but my other two DeLonghis have a light that kicks on when actively heating. Would have been a nice touch to get a sense of how much power I'm using. Bottom line: If you prefer the electric radiator approach to heating a room, you can't go wrong here. Great Oil-Filled Radiator; But Placement is Everything With this Heater
Long story short: I think this DeLonghi is the best oil-filled radiator I've owned. But that opinion comes with some caveats, the most important of which is that placement of this radiator is more critical than with most others if you want to get the maximum benefit from it. In theory, all electric heaters are 100 percent efficient. But that doesn't mean that they work the same. One thing I like about this radiator is that it has more heated surface area than most other models; so although it technically doesn't generate any more heat, it transfers it to the air more efficiently. The greater surface area means it warms the air more evenly and rapidly than most other oil-filled heaters. This heater also differs from other oil-filled radiators in that it has "chimneys" that direct the heat upwards. Once it's heated up, you can really feel the heat over the top of the heater. If you hold a piece of paper about a foot over the heater, the thermal updraft will actually move the paper upwards a bit. It really does get the air moving. Of course, if almost all of the heat is coming from the top of the heater, that means that very little is radiating from the sides. That's why the placement of the heater is so important. You have to place it in a part of the room where the column of warm air that rises from the top will settle on the parts of the room you want warmest as the air slightly cools. In other words, you have to set up a convection cycle that constantly circulates warm air up from the heater and down again onto the areas you want warmed. This heater is all about convection. Over the years, I've found that most oil-filled radiators work best when placed near a window or an exterior wall. This heater is an exception. I've found that it works best when placed near the center of a small room where a mushroom-shaped convection cycle can be established, or about four or five feet from the part of a large room that you want warmest (for example, about four or five feet in front of the sofa in a living room). Remember that because almost no heat comes from the sides, this heater's entire efficiency depends on convection. Think of the heater as the base of a mushroom or the handle of an umbrella over the area you want warmest, and position it accordingly so convection causes the air to circulate back down on those areas. It takes about half an hour for the convection to start happening, but once it does, the room will warm quickly. Another helpful hint from personal experience: If there's a stairway in the room you want to heat, and you don't want to heat the upstairs, place the heater across the room from the stairway. The heat will want to rise up the stairs, but it will have to pass across the room to do it. If you place the heater by the stairs, the heat will rise straight up the stairs without heating the room. Another thing I like about this heater is that it has a 24-hour timer. It's an old-fashioned one that requires that you first line up the line on the dial with the current time, and then set the teeth to their "ON" or "OFF" positions as desired in 15-minute increments. That's a bit of a chore, but the upside is that you can set multiple ON/OFF times. For example, if you want the heater to come on at 6:00 am and turn off at 7:30 am every morning so you can get ready for work, and then come on again at 5:00 pm and turn off at 10:00 pm so the room will be warm when you get home from work, you would just set all the teeth for 6:00 am to 7:30 am, and all the teeth for 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm, to ON, and leave the rest OFF. I use one of these heaters in my bedroom. I have set to come on about half an hour before I usually go to bed, and turn off about half an hour after I usually wake up. That keeps the room nice and warm even with the more-expensive propane heat turned down to 55 F. I do have two criticisms about this heater. The first is that the burn-in takes several days. During that time, the heater will emit an odor that some people may find irritating. I suggest you run the heater on high for a few days either outside or in your garage, shed, or basement until the heater is burned in. This problem is not peculiar to this heater. It's been true of every oil-filled radiator I've ever bought. They don't burn them in in the factories. The second criticism is that the timer doesn't have a battery backup. If the power goes out, the timer stops. All you have to do to reset it is line up the line on the dial with the current time again. You don't need to re-set all the teeth. But a battery backup for the timer would still be a nice addition. All in all, however, I'm very satisfied with this heater. Just remember that the peculiar way in which it forces air upwards means it may not work well in the spot where you would usually place an oil-filled radiator. Powerful heater, very quiet, no smell.
This is an excellent radiator that puts out a lot of heat with almost no noise and no smell. I used an infrared thermometer to measure the temp at the top and sides after 30 min on max. The top got to 368F while the sides didn't get over 160F. 368F sounds dangerous but I can still put my hand on top for a few seconds before I have to take it away so I'm not worried at all about burns if someone accidentally touches the heater. The temp difference between the top and sides shows that the thermal chimney design really works well. It draws cold air in from the bottom, dumps all of its heat into the air and then accelerates the air out of the top using only convection. No moving parts but it heats the air so well that there's a noticeable "breeze" of hot air that rises straight up from the heater. I have noticed some very faint clicks that the heater makes as it operates. The thermostat clicks softly when it turns on and off and rarely I'll hear a pop from the metal expanding while it heats or cools down. None of the noises are loud or distracting but I've seen a lot of comments asking if it makes ANY noise. It does, but I don't know how someone could make a quieter heater than this one. I've also seen a lot of reviews asking of there was a smell. I ran mine on high for a few hours when I first got it to burn off any smell there was. If I stuck my face right above the heater, I guess I could smell something like fresh paint/metal but it was very faint and not noticeable in the room. I've been running it for a few days now and nobody has noticed a smell. Definitely better than that "first time you turn it on" smell of a ceramic heater. We use this unit for secondary heat in a very large bedroom with vaulted ceilings that used to be a living room. When used with a fan near the ceiling to circulate air it let's us keep the house pretty cold while our room stays comfortable if we're wearing a light jacket. I let it run on max for a few hours the first day and came back to a 75 degree room when it was 25 outside so it's definitely capable of heating a large room, but the electric bill would probably be insane if this is the only heat source you use. All in all I'm extremely happy with this heater. It's the most I've ever spent on a space heater but it's solidly built, works well and when used with the timer should hopefully pay for itself this year. ... show more

Temper first, then set and forget for best results; great for California LATER COMMENT: **MUCH TOO EXPENSIVE TO RUN***
UPDATE: Feb 2015. These heaters are INCREDIBLY expensive to run. My comsumption went from average 13 kWh in Nov, to 44 in Jan, when I ran one heater most of the time (on low thermostat setting) and the other a few times a week for 6 hours or so. My Jan bill was $351 -- as opposed to the usual $35 or so. (Relatedly, they use a lot of watts; need their own circuit if in an older house with 20 amp fuses. My second heater tripped the fuse whenever it was on and I used the microwave.) My ancient in-floor heater broke. I can't afford a new heater installation this year, so bought the DeLonghi TRD40615T to tide us over. It's only California, so we don't need a huge amount of heating, usually, and I can't speak to its usefulness in Minnesota (!). However, it works well to keep a very large (750 sq. ft.) combined LR/DR/kitchen to about 8 - 10 degrees above outside. (70 rather than 60, e.g.) At first, I wasn't happy: it was *very* slow to heat up the room and smelled quite a bit of burning oil or plastic or something. Too lazy to send it back right away, I kept using it. Now, 5 days days later, it's stopped smelling. (I read in another review -- too late! -- that it's better to "temper" it, outside or in garage, on high, for some hours to burn off the smelly factory coating. This is good advice.) Also, it is much more effective now that I've stopped turning it on and off. I just set the thermostat at a temp I like, and leave in on all the time. (Though I do turn it down a few notches at night, and turn it up again in the morning before I go to work so the house is warm when I get home.) The other review also said that this (set and forget) is most economical; no electricity bills yet, so I don't know. I actually bought two, figuring that one wouldn't heat my large room enough. VERY LOUD NOISES AT RANDOM AND SPORADIC INTERVALS; WAKES YOU UP OFTEN AT NIGHT
I don't write many reviews, mainly because I'm usually not that picky, and if I don't like something, I just return it, rather than taking the time to write a negative review. However, this product was so egregiously bad that I feel I must warn people. Pros: + Yes, it DOES warm your place as advertised. The heating functionality works at a 7/10 satisfaction level - it had trouble heating my averaged size master bedroom, which a Honeywell hot-fan heater (1500W) also had trouble with. To be fair, the DeLonghi heated the room better than the hot-fan heater, maybe only due to the DeLonghi being a radiant heater rather than a fan heater. + Yes, the manual timer is GREAT. That's the main reason I chose this unit. The manual timer has many little pegs that you can toggle on and off; each peg delineates a 15 minute interval that the timer should be on. So, with this unit, you can plan out an entire 24-hour cycle easily. + Timer is manual, rather than electronic / digital; in this day and age, digital parts and control boards often go bad after a year or two; having manual, analog parts actually makes the device far more reliable in the long run. Cons: - Makes ALOT of odd, *very* loud, clicking noises. I have a suspicion that the stupid metal chimney design (they encased the actual radiator with a wall of metal -- see the pictures), actually causes this surrounding metal to heat and cool at slightly different rates, causing thermal contraction / expansion at different rates. This causes the metal to mark very LOUD (woke me up from my sleep all night for a few weeks while I tried it) noises that are like high-pitched CLICKS and CREAKS. - The noise alone is a deal breaker. This thing will wake you up at all hours of the night, even AFTER you turn it off. It makes noises while it is on; and after it is off, it STILL makes noises for the next few hours. Again, I believe this is the metal contracting and expanding at different rates throughout the structure. Conclusion: I have no idea how in the heck did this product pass Quality Assurance testing. It's like, they had this major design flaw, didn't notice it until after mass production, and decided, "Awww hell why not, let's sell it and see if nobody bothers to return it." Nope nope nope, this product single handedly ruined my impression of DeLonghi's brand forever. I used to consider them an above average brand; now they are just a crappy regular brand in my mind. I will probably try another radiant heater, such as the one from Honeywell -- even if it performs just as average as this heater, at least it won't make a whole ton of very loud clicks and noises that will wake me up at night. Excellent performance, pleasantly suprised.
I was looking for a safe heater for bedrooms. Our home has no upstairs heat currently and we needed something for each room. Since two of the rooms are kids rooms, I wanted something as safe as possible, and while no space heater is 100% safe, I believe the DeLonghi TRD40415T gets very close. I was a bit wary of radiant heat - how good can that be exactly, with no blower or fan? I recalled days of my own youth relying on hot water radiators to heat the house. Suffice to say, this DeLonghi unit is light years ahead of that technology - granted both radiant heat, but just as rotary phones and iPhones are both "telephones", its hardly the same thing. I was very surprised by both the heat output and feel of the radiant heat - it rises mostly from the top and although I know better, you could be fooled into believing it has a fan - but it doesn't. On Medium, the unit noticeably raised the temperature of a 16 X 16 basement room from chilly to comfortable in around 2 hours. On high, the unit easily pushed the room to overly warm, toasty even. I imagine a High setting would cut the time to "comfortable" by about a third. The unit is easy to operate and settings are mostly intuitive. The only potentially confusing part might be the timer, but only if you have never used a mechanical timer like this before, and once you figure it out, its very easy. The timer is also infinitely flexible, enabling you to set multiple on and off periods. I have the heater kick on at 5am, then off at 8am - so heating the room for morning, then it remains off until 6pm and heats until 8:30pm - so heating the room again before bed. The unit is mostly silent - it may click and tap once or twice upon initial startup, but it is not overly noticeable and seems to diminish with use. Otherwise, the only sound is the timer running, and you can only hear that with your ear directly on the unit - which is a bad idea anyway....The unit does get hot to the touch, particularly on top. On Medium, you may get a 3-5 second count before you must remove your finger from the sides or front, on High, I didn't even attempt to touch it. The sides are somewhat cooler, but no so much that they would not burn with prolonged contact. Ultimately, this is a heater, if therefor must get hot somewhere. The advantages are that there is no exposed heating element, no loud fan, little to no chance of catching something on fire due to a brief accidental contact and burns are unlikely to occur unless handled improperly - you'd sort of have to try burn yourself. The trade-off is a slower heat transfer versus a fan driven heater and the unit is heavy - although the weight does somewhat deter inappropriate positioning and helps resist accidental tip-over and similar accidents. I run the units on medium to maximize safety while still putting out enough heat. Although no space heater should really be left unattended, I feel confident that this unit's passive radiant heat and quiet uncomplicated operation, make it a much more reliably safe option versus other space heating alternatives. ... show more

Great item, no issues!
I can’t believe I almost didn’t buy this heater because of the negative reviews. I have experienced none of the issues reported. It arrived well packed and damage free, there has been no smell whatsoever, and it operates completely silently as far as I can tell. HUGE improvement over my loud ceramic heater which warmed by blowing air out noisily and inefficiently. This one heats my smallish (maybe 12x12?) bedroom quickly and effectively. Much quicker than I was expecting based on some the other reviews. You feel a change in the temperature of a smallish room like this almost immediately. The heat is somehow nicer than what comes out of a ceramic heater. It fills the whole room with heat instead of just blowing in one spot. The manual timer was one of the main features I wanted, so I could run it safely on a schedule, as I heard using smart plugs with a high wattage item like this can be dangerous. It has been great overall. Only improvement would be if they could make a remote for it. If I ever need another heater I will certainly pick up a second one of these babies! ... show more
