Honestly, I had high hopes for this camera because I already own another Defender camera that I've been very happy with. Because of that experience, I was interested to see how this newer model would compare. One of the biggest differences is the solar panel. For some people, this could be a major selling point, but personally, I'm not a huge fan of the setup. The solar panel is fairly large and requires a separate installation, so I now have two separate pieces mounted to the side of my house. I've seen other cameras that integrate the solar panel directly into the camera body and only require a few hours of sunlight, and I prefer that approach. Since I test a lot of security cameras, I also already have a power supply available, so the solar feature isn't particularly useful for my setup. Like many modern security cameras, Defender also has a subscription model. You can still access and view your recordings without subscribing, which I appreciate, but many of the more advanced features are tied to the subscription. For my needs, I'm primarily interested in being able to quickly see when someone walks up my driveway, so I appreciate that the basic recording functionality is still available. One thing that surprised me was that this camera requires a different mobile app from my existing Defender camera. My original Defender camera requires an account and uses one app, while this newer camera requires another app and its own account system. I couldn't simply use the same credentials between the two apps, which I found frustrating. It's not a deal-breaker, but if you're buying multiple Defender cameras, I'd much rather have everything managed through a single app. The good news is that the newer app itself is actually pretty nice. The interface is completely different from the original Defender app, but it's a little more refined and easier to navigate. I particularly like the filtering options for recorded events. You can filter footage for things like people and vehicles, and there's even an option for small animals and pets. That last feature is actually one I was particularly interested in. I have a neighbor's dog that occasionally sneaks into my yard and leaves me an unwanted "surprise," so being able to specifically identify small animals could be genuinely useful. Hopefully, it will help me figure out exactly when my four-legged visitor decides to stop by. For what you get, I think the camera is a little expensive, but it's not unreasonable compared with other cameras I've tested. If you're comparing it with similar cameras from a big-box store, you're likely going to spend considerably more for a name-brand system. Overall, I'm impressed with the camera's features and especially the AI detection options. The separate solar panel, subscription model, and requirement for a completely different app from my other Defender camera are the biggest drawbacks for me. That said, the camera itself provides a good combination of features and recording capabilities, and the newer app is a noticeable improvement in terms of usability. There's quite a bit more I could say about the camera, but one thing I won't be showing in my testing footage is the view of my driveway because the camera clearly captures vehicle license plates. That's actually a good indication of how much detail the camera is able to capture, but for obvious privacy reasons, I'm keeping that footage to myself. ... show more

Got this for my dads house. We set it up on a tree outside and the wifi signal reaches his older 2.4Ghz wifi router fine. The soloar panel so far seems to keep the camera charged. Camera itself is pretty good and has a really good quality video. It does not have much of a range to connect to WiFi. It’s only about 60 feet from the router but has trouble connecting. Also, Defender has very poor customer service. I have reached out to them several times with basically only AI generated replies. We got this to monitor activity in front of our house due to some car break ins in our neighborhood. My husband set it up in just a few minutes. You do have to download an app to access the camera. I found the app to be a bit complicated at first but once I spent some time playing around with it I was able to better figure it out. The video picture is clear. This solar camera comes with a solar panel w/cord, camera, 2 mounting brackets, and a charging cord. First, this camera is pretty simple to set up and install. The app is not as nice as the defender empower app. The defender clear vu app has a large advertisement that overshadows the camera view in the home page. The app also pushes online cloud video and hides the onboard SD card video behind the cloud video making you see their 2 second clip of preview of their cloud video before asking you to buy the cloud upgrade. Then it allows you to switch to the onboard replay of the recorded video on your SD card. This I find a bit pushy. If I wanted the cloud I would have already purchased it and I don't want to see it every time I want to look up video playback. Other than that the camera charges well from the solar panel during the day. It hardly uses any charge over night since I have it set to only record events. Even with the 24 hour recording it doesn't use the full charge overnight. The video is clear and switches seamlessly to ir night vision when it starts getting dark. The only detail that was lost in the transition was color which is normal as ir doesn't have color. The camera is stationary, but it does have a pretty wide view allowing a large area to be covered by this camera. The motion sensor is fair and not as spotty as the ptz versions of defender which I really like, but have a tendency to get stuck in a corner or lag in auto tracking of targets. The SD slot takes up to a 256Gb card. I tend to use a 64Gb card in my cameras since I only record events and I usually have to clear out the memory once every 11 or 12 months. The light, audio, and alarm functions work as they are supposed to work. The camera sometimes takes about 30 seconds to connect via wifi, but it has a pretty stable connection once connected even when I am away from home. While the pet detection option is locked behind their pay plan, I did notice that when I have it set to detect all movement I get video recordings of even small animals like rabbits. One last thing to consider, the solar panel has a built in cord. If the cord gets damaged you will have to get a new panel as well as the cord is part of the panel and not detachable. ... show more
