  • Great Item to have in your car for emergency jump start.

The media could not be loaded. DB Power Jump Starter Model DJS80 Capacity 12800mAh/47.36Wh In 5v/2A Output1 5V 2.1A Output2 5V/1 Peak Current 1000A Starting Current 600A Working Temperature -4F-140F/-20C-60C Weight 13.6 oz/385g Case 8L”x 5W”x3H” Battery 5-3/4L”x3-1/2”Wx1-3/8”H Flat Charge Cord USB-A to USB-C 12” Intelligent Digital Readout Clamp Reach Black 9”, Red 11” Disclaimer I have been given this product to evaluate. The test below is done in an 80-100F or 26-38C environment. Cold weather will be much more demanding to start a car so it is unknown how it will perform in these conditions. Testing was done on 2.2L gasoline engine. The quality seems good and it comes in a zippered soft rigid case that nicely holds the battery, intelligent jumper clamps, flat 12” USB-A to USB-C charge cable, and manual. No AC wall charger is included but any standard USB charger will work. I have been testing the Jump Starter several times now by purposely running my car battery down by leaving the lights and the air fan running. Note in each test I verified if car could start on its own before using Jump Starter. Test one leave lights on overnight. This ran the battery down to near 0. The Jump Starter was not able to start car at first try. I believe this is because the battery being drained drew additional current along with starter. I let the battery sit for a while with no load (turned off lights) which enabled the battery to recover some voltage and tried again. The Jump Starter was able to start the car then. Test two. Since a long term draining, weak, or dead battery can require more starting current I was wondering if the car battery was complete disconnect if the Jump Starter alone would work. It did work but took two cranks to start as starting seems harder. Note I tried this experiment twice but first time failed because Jump Start was not fully charged up. Jump Start must be freshly charged to try this. Test three. I was wondering how many times I could start my car over and over. I repeatedly ran my battery down and was able to jump start it 7 times without having to recharge the Jump Starter battery. This is good because you may need several tries to start. Unit needs a rest between starts to prevent overheating. Minor gripes: When I first used the Jump Starter the instructions through me in confusion. Page 4 step 3 in manual said when plugging in the intelligent jump clamp cable to the Jump Starter the digital display will show the Jump Starter voltage .Note when connected to car battery only it will display the car battery voltage. I did not see this voltage displayed and only saw a rotating rectangle. I contacted Customer Service several times over this and reps were puzzled but did finally did say it was not necessary to see Voltage for it to work. This was true unit still works fine if voltage not seen. Nowhere have I found in the manual what rotating rectangle display means but looking closer at step 3 it has “or light up” I take that to mean the rotating rectangle (meaning ready). I did finally see the Jump Starter voltage and found out it only flashes for one second but I notice it sometimes flashes so quickly you only see blink which explains how voltage is intermittently seen. I discovered this has to do with the intelligent jump start clamp cable electronics. This has nothing to do with Jump Starter battery unit. The purpose of clamp electronics is to determine when it is safe to allow current flow from Jump Starter battery. I can hear a relay click noise when it connects. It somehow senses voltage/current to know when to allow the connection. I think there needs to be some refinement in manual and electronics to make this clearer. However due note Jump Starter works and does what it is meant to do. My second gripe is the rubber cover on the jumping port is not easy to lift and having to use a tool to get a lift started. Conclusions the Jump Start bottom line works just great. It was able to start engine (with no car battery) due to intelligent jumper clamp. I have another brand jump start kit but its jumper clamp design will not allow this. I had a couple of minor gripes so minus 5% in rating but what it is supposed to do jump start a car it did with no problems, I give a 95% thumbs up. ***** I highly advise everyone should have one of these in their car kit. I have had one for a few years and it has saved me on numerous occasions when camping in middle of nowhere and I ran my car battery down charging my cell phone, listening to the radio, and having interior lights on. I also saved a couple of stranded people who could not start their cars due to battery issues. It beats having to drag out jumper cables. • 4 years still good!
I keep it in the car - normal southern hot and cold cycles and checked it and topped off the charge every 6 months to 1 year. I used it once after about 2 years and it worked fine. It is now 3.8 years old and I guess I let it go more than a year without checking and it was totally discharged, but it took a full recharge and is now holding at 100% charge again. Outstanding! almost 4 years old now. Great durability. ... show more

  • Appears to be well-made and well-equipped
Size: DJS50
I ordered the red-colored DBPOWER 800A Peak 18000mAh Portable Car Jump Starter the day after my SUV's battery died and I had to wait for the AAA guy to give me a jump. He used a similar (though a much bigger / beefier) device. Ordering was easy on Amazon, and I cannot believe it arrived in LESS than 24 hours after I ordered it. The device has a solid build quality, and well-written directions. While the Amazon description only mentions / has a picture of the case and the 8-in-one connectors to charge a laptop, the device also comes with a car cigarette lighter plug to charge it and a micro USB cord (neither of which are pictured or even mentioned in the description). While the device and included zipper case seem sturdy and well made, the car cigarette lighter plug is questionable. It is made of very lightweight plastic which seems like it would crack if dropped or left in a hot car for awhile. It also does not appear to have a fuse inside. There was a red-colored version and a yellow-colored version on Amazon. Not sure what the difference is between them, other than the color and the "available on Amazon since..." date is 2016 for the red and 2017 for the yellow one. While I (sort of) look forward to trying it out, I'd obviously prefer not to have a dead battery again. One question mark is the directions say to connect it and only try to start the car for 3 (THREE) seconds, then wait at least 30 seconds, disconnect the cables, reconnect, then try again. Three seconds is awfully short, and when stranded, having to try, stop, disconnect, wait, then try again seems iffy -- especially if you are alone. If it is fully charged, I'm not sure why there's all of the pausing needed. However, better that than being stranded for hours waiting for AAA or hoping for the kindness of strangers. Other concerns: 1) the directions say to deplete the device's battery and recharge it every three months, but there's no explanation on how one depletes the device's battery if you don't jump your car battery a bunch of times. 2) Also mentions the device has to have more than 50% battery in order to work. I'm not sure how much of a percentage one jump start takes, but I suspect most people would think the device should still work if it says any % of battery remains -- especially as much as 50%. Many people may miss that caveat in the manual and think they don't need to charge it until a much lower percentage. If it only works at >50%, relying on percentages doesn't seem a very helpful measure of determining whether the device is ready for use. A simple green / yellow / red system may be more straightforward -- and avoid someone being stranded because they assumed 50% would be enough. 3) The Amazon description cautions against storing the jump starter inside the car in the summer and other hot weather. The best and most likely place to store a device intended to jump start a car battery is IN ONE'S CAR. It is not very practical to expect customers to take the device in and out of their car every time they park it -- especially if you live somewhere like Florida where it is pretty much hot all year. Given the intended purpose of the device, it seemingly needs to be engineered to withstand the high temperatures one expects may occur in a parked car. However, I suppose this is something all of these devices have in common, and not an issue just with this model. 4) I'm concerned with how short the battery cables are -- the black one is just 5 inches long, and the red is 7.5 inches. That's incredibly short -- especially if you connect the black cable to the car frame rather than the battery's black terminal. While the directions do say to clip the black to the battery, I was always taught to connect the black jumper cable to the car frame NOT the battery being charged. 5) Finally, the packaging and the company's web site both mention a ONE year warranty, but the Amazon description lists a THREE year warranty. I assume the ONE year is probably correct, given that is what the company's own web site and packaging say. Overall, the red-colored DBPOWER 800A Peak 18000mAh Portable Car Jump Starter seems well-built and well-equipped. Ultimately, however, I'll need to have my car battery die again to know the device truly works as expected. For about $60, however, the peace of mind seems worth the price. ... show more
