I would rank it with 4 stars out of 5. The only star I reduce because of its size. For small tanks like 3 gallons or less, this size is fine but for the bigger tanks like 5+ gallons, the size isn't big enough. to utilize its energy for the entire water in the tank, I try to keep it as low as possible and because of that it becomes almost impossible to keep the temperature controlling knob out of water. Anyways other than that, it is a great device that perfectly does its job and maintains the tank water temp as desired. Works fine except I noticed a ticking sounds when heating. About every 5 seconds, tick, tick. Which can be heard 15 feet away when the room is quiet. So I wonder how annoying that must be to the fish that live in the water with this constantly ticking heater. It is adjustable, you determine the setting. I don't trust preset heaters, and this one is a top dial style, but the temp you set it to is easily read in your hand, but not when submerged. However, it is completely submersible and uses real numbers, not marks, notches, or a stupid plain dial.. What is not good about this heater, and it is my ONLY complaint, is no on light.. Even the preset that came from an aquarium kit has a light so you can tell when it is on and functioning. This does not. I always use a photography thermometer on all my tanks to know what the temp really is. So far, so good. This product is only a degree or so off, quite acceptable. It's just if it wasn't functioning I could not discern this by sight. Thus I deducted one star. ... show more
