  • Best Wifi I've had _ever_
Size: DIR-882-US Style: WiFi5 1-Pk Router
I upgrade my network equipment on a fairly regular basis as new tech comes out and as the amount of connected stuff I have in my large household increases. I am a developer who works at home, I've got a large number of devices, NAS, PCs, connected cameras, as well as a bunch of phones, tablets, audio, 2 smart tvs 2 game consoles, and a few other connected things. We also run a youtube channel, podcast, and stream. I upgraded from Netgear's comparable router to the D-Link, and my bandwidth doubled, and the MIMO/QOS functionality can be seen easily by running speedtest on multiple devices at the same time. The firmware and features of the D-Link are so much richer and nicer than the Netgear I may never go back. I never could get a netgear to give me an accurate list of connected devices, and the netgear's firmware was so slow. the D-Link gets it right every time, and the firmware is _fast_. The D-Link has been running for about a month straight now without any downtime, slowdowns, reboots or problems. It was very easy to set up (contrary to some of the other reviews online, but maby that is due to my experience level) Next upgrade is definitely going to be a D-Link. ... show more

  • Great router after first firmware update. Broken after second update.
Size: DIR-882-US Style: WiFi5 1-Pk Router
I had problems with dropped links to this D-Link router and there was no firmware update at the time so I went back to my old Netgear router. However, after I finally checked for and installed the D-Link update it has been working flawlessly. Very happy with performance now. July 2019: D-link just did an update that made this router slow and unreliable. Factory resets and reboots don’t help. Can’t log into DIR-882 using Edge browser. Firefox works though. Not a happy customer anymore. ... show more

  • Works with firmware 1.02 Works with firmware 1.02
Size: DIR-882-US Style: WiFi5 1-Pk Router
At first, I was really dissapointed with the extremely poor performance of this wireless router. Every single firmware ( I even tried with DD-WRT) made it worse; except version "WPA2 Security (KRACK) Patch (1.02B02 BETA)". Don't forget to do a 10 second reset after successfully uploading the firmware to the flash memory. Also, if you're having trouble with webpages not loading images or taking forever to load, try changing the MTU value (take a look at the troubleshooting section of the manual) in Settings>Internet>Advance. Finally, the UI is too simple, making things like QoS (which is the main feature in a gaming router) way too basic. It also lacks features like LAN segmentation (VLAN), which is very useful when you have IP cameras and/or a NAS. If you are a gamer and your ISP uses HFC (Cable) Internet connections, don't expect this router to improve your Internet connection by lowering your ping or giving you some extra bandwidth. The only thing that gives you a low ping and low jitter, is being close to the server and switching to a fiber connection (FTTH). Besides, the best for a gaming console or PC is a wired connection, so make sure that whatever network equipment you plan to buy, at least meet these 4 basic requirements: 1. Decent ethernet cables (Cat6 and above) 2. Gigabit ethernet ports 3. High throughput (WAN>LAN/LAN>WAN) 4. Advance QoS features that allow you to prioritize traffic not only by device, but also by protocol or even application. If you are looking for a solid gaming router, keep looking, this woudn't be your best choice. If you can get one of these at 50% off (I got mine at $72) and somehow you can make it work, then it's alright. It gets the job done for most use cases. Edit: If you are troubleshooting the missing images, slow webpage loading, and overall lagging; check the color of the Internet connection LED (the second from left to right). If the LED is amber, then there's some kind of problem or limitation with the Internet connection. Try changing the MTU number (in my case, 1500 was the right value). When the LED changes to a green color, the problem is fixed. ... show more

  • A great and affordable device for DD-WRT usage
Size: DIR-882-US Style: WiFi5 1-Pk Router
As a long-time user of DD-WRT on another brand of WiFi router, when it came time to upgrade, support for DD-WRT was a must-have. After lengthy "research", I settled on the D-Link DIR-882-US for several reasons. DD-WRT seems to have limited support of 802.11ax so far, so 802.11ac was preferred. Of the numerous brands and models, this device seemed to have a great balance of speed, price, and support by DD-WRT. Since the construction of my multi-story house requires multiple WiFi devices for full coverage, price was critical. Additionally, many devices on the market are large and ugly. The DIR-882-US is neither. It looks professional and unassuming, and if it peeks out from behind my furnishings will not look like a tacky "gamerz" WiFi device. One location it was needed required vertical wall-mounting, and this has been working well. It is easily 5-10 times as fast as my older WiFi devices. Achieving this did take some effort, due largely to overconfidence on my part because of having experience with DD-WRT on another brand of device. I basically messed-up the first time I tried installing DD-WRT and had to temporarily roll-back the old devices for a couple of days while I diagnosed things and walked through the installation and setup sequence more carefully. Once I had the latest DD-WRT installed, everything has been working very well. Note that I never tried the vendor's software, only DD-WRT. There are faster WiFi routers out there, even faster 802.11ac devices supported by DD-WRT. For my situation, the DIR-882-US router hits the sweet spot for value, and has been an excellent upgrade. ... show more

  • Great router and great price
Size: DIR-882-US Style: WiFi5 1-Pk Router
Last year, I got tired of my TP-Link Archer AC1750 and decided to 'upgrade' to a pair Google OnHubs to take advantage of Google WiFi's supposedly great mesh network system. I have never owned a more disappointing, piece of garbage, feature-less router than Google WiFi. This past weekend was the last straw, so I decided to look elsewhere. Most of these mesh systems attempt to be very consumer friendly in that they only offer apps for management rather than a web admin page. I *need* a web admin page. I do port forwarding and use DHCP reservations, which are frustrating to do on an app, and I flat out hate using my phone to administer my router. My house is 2350 sqft, and 2 stories. I was initially concerned that the D-Link AC2600 EXO (DIR-882) wouldn't cover my whole house and back yard, but those concerns were unfounded. I placed the router upstairs in the front of the house, and speed tests are still excellent in the backyard. The web admin page is clean and uncluttered, and updating the router didn't wipe the settings, which may seem like an obvious feature, but tell that to TP-Link. The only thing that was difficult to find was where to do DHCP reservations (the home menu, click on the device list, then on a specific device). Everything else was pretty straightforward. I did turn off the smart connect feature (or whatever it's called) on the Wireless page, because my iPhone was connecting automatically to the 2.4 GHz network instead of the 5 GHz network. That might've been because of something I did on my Mac, though (changes sync across iCloud...yadda yadda), so possibly not the router's fault. Anyway, overall, I'm happy with this router so far. The price point for the feature set seems pretty hard to beat. ... show more

  • While the wifi signal is great, everything else makes this product a burning heap of garbage.
Size: DIR-882-US Style: WiFi5 1-Pk Router
The setup was actually simple and straightforward. There is a nice app that can link with your router easily enough, although the app's auto-login feature kept getting the password wrong when it tried logging in my phone and sharing it to other Apple devices. That should have sent up more warning flags. My old router (currently set up again) is a Netgear and uses plug-and-play for multiple USB Hard Drives for personal storage and streaming content throughout the house. It is set up through a simple USB hub, and connects perfectly with few issues aside from long load times when I upload data to it. I had hoped this new device would be just as simple, as it was newer and featured both 2.0 and 3.0 USB plugs. As you might guess, no. It recognized one of the multiple hard drives, and only a single folder from said hard drive. Rather than their USB Share being a folder on Windows (or Mac) for the USB hub, it was a Windows Media Center playlist that refused to load in my Windows 7 version of Media Player. Further, setting up any kind of direct links to the two USB drives it eventually recognized out of four, it would refuse to operate properly and instead just ignore my requests. I tried using their FAQs on the website, but they were set up as to insult the user or treat them like they knew not what a "computer" was. Upon doing some digging, I found out that their share interface uses SAMBA. Not a dance, this is apparently a UNIX system program meant for file sharing developed in 1995, and has no windows support. Any links from the SAMBA website result in dead ends, and it seems like a computer science degree is needed from the same decade to know how any of this works. Another alternative is to set up mini-servers for each hard drive... but only if it knows the hard drives exist. This also does not fix the issue of the missing folders. The router claims to be plug-and-play, but only if you don't mind not having access to your own media or the ability to use it like an actual USB drive. The router's interface is also primitive and archaic, with even the advanced settings not bothering to actually provide what most people would call "advanced settings." Instead, it goes for form over function, and is merely content to look pretty and do little else. Even my 4 year old Netgear router had better options, and it's almost ancient in terms of computers now. Frustrated beyond belief, I decided to call up their customer support line. From their website and the router's built-in information, they claim it is 24/7 support. As it turns out, D-Link has magically somehow crammed 24 hours of 7 day a week support into the hours of 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. I am not about to take a day off of work in order to contact these clowns who believe that this is technical support, considering their website is about as helpful as written instructions in Sanskrit. The router is currently in its original packaging, waiting for the return label to be printed. This router has a great signal strength, and is actually pretty solid if you just plan to use the internet for streaming or gaming. If you bother to do anything else, such as store photos remotely in your personal cloud on a hard drive, do video streaming, or have personal backups of anything on a network, this Router is far from ideal and felt like it was actively working against me in order to thwart what I needed to do. This is the worst product I've had the privilege of using, and I've made the mistake of buying a launch model Nook Color tablet. ... show more

  • Too much money for so few features
Size: DIR-882-US Style: WiFi5 1-Pk Router
This is a very basic, yet expensive, entry-level router. If you need a simple-to-set-up and forget-about-it router (just an access point name and password) this one works fine - although you can find just-as-capable routers for $50 less. If you require access to even the most modest feature set, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. Everything from the physical layout to the UI design is ill-thought-out, or the result of cut corners - which is odd, considering the high price. That said, if you buy it on sale, it is worth the $100. But considering its UI flaws and limitations, I would hesitate to spend the $150 asking price. + Easy, UI-driven Quick Setup gets you online fast + Good "At a Glance" overview in the UI to get the router's status + Simple, minimal design that doesn't look like it belongs in a teenager's room + 4 antennae allow for fairly good coverage + Range is very good (compared to the 2008 unit it replaced). In fact, I can reliably get 2.4 Ghz signal outside of my (brick) house, on the side farthest from the router (about 40 ft away and up one story) - Throughput was peak at 25 mbs at 2.4 Ghz, and 62 mbs at 5 Ghz using the N spec with iperf3 to a wired sever (at about 25 ft through one drywall wall). This is in line with the 2008 draft-N router this unit replaced, which is disappointing - particularly the 5 Ghz response. - UI is overly simplistic, to the point that any specialized settings you may need are difficult to find, or simply not available - No DHCP table, only a list of current clients (which is usually inaccurate and incomplete, at best) - DHCP reservation limited to 25 for no particular reason - No real way to separate IOT/unsecure devices from the rest of your network (You can do it with the "Guest Network", but it's hacky and presents other problems) - No site survey for optimal channel selection - Firewall is set to "off" by default! - Limited usage statistics and no statistical history. Want to see how much data your kids are using or what device is killing your bandwidth? ... Nope! - No Ethernet indicator lights - You could wall mount the router, but the slots are backwards, with the Ethernet ports facing up. Unless your modem and wired network are above the unit or wired through the ceiling, it looks ridiculous - not to mention the wires flopping down onto the antennae. Of course, the slots aren't reversible. While one could argue that I was expecting too much for a $150 router, these were all features of my 2008 router. One would figure, after 9 years, some improvements would trickle their way down to the lower end of the high-tier market (and for $150, this IS the low-end of high tier). You can buy routers with these same features (and more) in the $150-$200 range. In fact, my wireless extender has most of these features (sans a guest network) and costs $70. If you get it on sale for $100, it's a simple router with good range and no frills. For $150, you can can get a router with a better firmware UI and hopefully, a better physical layout. ... show more

  • Works well in metal building, car shop environment
Size: DIR-882-US Style: WiFi5 1-Pk Router
First Impressions: Interface is real basic, not pretty, but the wifi alone is 10x better than the Archer a9 AC1900 and AC1200 routers it replaced. The 1200 was the old one that the Archer A9 replaced. Both TP Link routers dropped connections, wired and wireless, and when working, were slow, slow, stutter, slow. This D-Link DIR 882 is a far better router than the dollars spent would indicate. I am OK with a plain GUI, because the actual CONNECTIONS are what is important to me, as I use my wireless for programming through manufacturer's servers, and bricking a 1200 dollar box is more expensive than a 140.00 router. Nothing I do is gaming like, and probably not bandwidth demanding, but that drop-free connection is critical. The 1900, supposedly with MIMO and better specs, off the bat, was a bigger pile than the cheap 1200 router. I do use this router with two laptops, one tablet, two cel phones using wifi calling, and 8 ethernet devices, some of them POE cameras, and one of them an ethernet smart TV, so the cumulative data can add up. Remember, this is in a metal building with foil insulation and metal walls with metal vehicles inside, going through metal insulated doors, as well. I do recommend setting two antennas straight up and two sideways. So far, so good, but the improvement is extremely noticeable. I will likely update on long term performance in the future. ... show more
