- Scaled to fit 3/4 size bass with a playing length of 41 3/4 inches (1060mm), medium tension strings are optimized to the needs of a majority of players. This low B string is nickel wound. Helicore Orchestral bass strings are multi-stranded steel core strings that produce a warm tone quality with excellent bow response. The core design makes for strings that are very easy to play under the left hand. Helicore Orchestral bass strings are multi-stranded steel core strings that produce a warm tone quality with excellent bow response. The core design makes for strings that are very easy to play under the left hand. Damping is optimized for arco use, but they also work well for pizzicato applications where a very warm, less-sustaining sound is desired. The 1/2 scale strings are gauged specifically for 1/2 size bass with a playing length of 38 3/8 inches (975mm).

Great, affordable strings to make my bass sing.

I'm a big fan of these strings so far. I bought them to replace the old strings which had been on my bass for about 10 years. The Helicore orchestral mediums work well for my bass and sound good for orchestral playing. The D'addario brand is a good alternative to the European brands which have gone up in price over the last few years. These were less expensive than offerings from Pirastro, Corelli, or Thomastik. They are also high quality, much better than cheap brands like Super Sensitive. I might like to try D'addario Kaplans next time I need new strings, as they are supposedly a step up from Helicores.

Very Good Orchestral Strings

I just bought a Shen SB100 bass three months ago. This Shen is a laminated bass. It's not an expensive bass ($2200), but it's well regarded and very well made. I asked that Bel Canto strings be installed on the bass (since I was buying it new). I had never used Bel Cantos but I had read good reviews on the TalkBass.com forum. The Bel Cantos seemed to be very good, but they were a high tension string (in my opinion) and I was working a little too hard to press them down. Other Shen owners had said on the forum that sometimes you need to try out several brands of strings before you will find one that plays well and sounds good with your instrument. My next set of strings were D'Addario Kaplans. I felt they were an improvement over the Bel Cantos. Less tension and a great tone. But I wasn't happy with the response I was getting from the A and E strings. I had used Helicores in the past. I knew that they were a reliable all-around string. So I decided to get a set of Helicores. Since I liked the sound of the Kaplan D and G I decided to put together a "Hybrid" set using the Hellicores on A and E. It worked great and that is what I have stayed with now. I did put the Helicore G and D on as well and they were fine, but I really liked the sound of the Kaplans on G and D and since I had them and had the luxury of mixing and matching, that was my final choice. But, that all said, had I put on the Helicores right from the start I probably would have been content with those.

Great stings at a great price. I did a lot of research on which strings sounded best for orchestra playing. There is a lot of debate, but these ranked fairly high and the price was outstanding.

Very impressed with the punch in pizzicato and smoothness in arco response. Have played Bass Violin for many decades -- mainly used Pirastro through the years, but these are very good! Will buy again.
