  • Brightest Nickels. Top notch quality.
Style: Long Scale Size: Light, 45-100
I've spent an uncomfortable amount of money on bass strings in the attempt to find the perfect set for me. Of course, the assessment of what is best depends on which bass I'm putting these on, but the quality of these strings is truly top notch in any application. I have them now on my 1976 Rickenbacker 4001 (EXL 170 set) and I don't think I'll need to search any further. They provide the perfect balance of tension (in fact, D'Addario gives you all the tension specs... if that helps you) and contribute faithfully to the distinct Ric sound that one would expect from these basses. Of all the Nickel plated strings I have tested, these are by far the brightest. They produce excellent high/mid-high tones without the excessive "clangyness" that some steel strings can exhibit. The low-end punch isn't left out either. You also get the benefit of the softer feel of nickel on your fingers, and they're a bit easier on the frets. Give these a try! You won't be disappointed. ... show more

  • I have tried much more expensive strings and always come back to these
Style: Long Scale Size: Medium, 50-105 (2-Pack)
My favorite strings at a great price. I play out regularly and we play long sets. I'm aggressive with my plucking fingers and after a two hour set, the nickel is easier on my fingers than stainless steel. I have never compared nickel and stainless side by side, but I can't notice any loss of high end sparkle. When wiped down after each set, these strings last as long as any others I have ever used and I've tried most brands over the course of my career that has spanned well over 1500 gigs. These strings sound as great on my Fender Jazz as they do on my Spector. ... show more

  • Sounds soooooo good on Gretsch g2220.
Style: Short Scale Size: Medium, 50-105
so I tried several strings for my Short Scale Gretsch g2220. First was Ernie Ball regular slinky short scale. Which I really like it but for some reason I was missing some brightness which lacks on short scale basses. Then I tried buying Ernie Ball cobalt regular scale but they didn't fit on my tuners, it was too thick. Next one was the rotobass swing stell strings that my bass heroes all use, but I thought it was a little rough on my fingers and still not the sound I wanted. So back in Brazil when I started playing bass the most affordable strings were D'Addario and I was apprehensive to try it because Ernie balls were super expensive I thought they were the best. So I bought D'Addario nickel wound .50, the same one the that apparently Mike Kerr from Royal Blood uses. I restring my g2220 with these and adjusted the bridge and pickups for my tone taste and wow! This sounds amazing!!! It's so bright and punchy, sounds really good either you play with fingers or picks. The ONLY downside is that .50 are a little more difficult to play, I even ordered .45s to replaced this. I was actually considering replacing the G and D for the .45 and .64 set so it gets a better playability but cancelled and decided to keep this as my true set. I always played with higher tension strings and I'm not that virtuous or play many solos. These are perfect if you play rock, metal or funk. I will update this review with photos and after I feel that I need to replace the set. 100% recommended. Hands down for D'Addario for keeping improving the quality of their strings. ... show more

  • These are güt
Style: Medium Scale Size: Light, 45-100
After about 2 months, 2 weeks with these strings I’ve came back for a review. I’ve tried countless strings looking for a tone i like. These are definitely the ones I’ll be sticking to. The bright tone didn’t last incredibly long, got them broken in in about 5 days of almost constant playing, now 2 and a half months in and that bright tone is about 70% gone I’d say. Could just be my sweaty hands doing some harm and me neglecting to wipe them down after every practice. But man these were crazy good for that first while. I’ve had strings that were considerably more expensive than these ones and let me tell you these are surprisingly better. If you like to slap these are what you want IMHO. The pops I get out of these strings are insanely bright and actually sound completely correct. Other strings sometimes get it right as well but there’s something about them that doesn’t sound right. These ones just sound right with whatever you’re playing. ... show more

  • Top strings: Nice to install and play
Style: Long Scale Size: Medium, 50-105
The following was written by my husband who uses the bass guitar. I don’t think anyone likes to restring an electric bass guitar. It can be like fighting a hardware war with the heavy wires. With the D’Addario string set I bought, I had a pretty easy time. Some of the nice features are the color-coded stays and the tapering on the E-string. You will also find the finish on the strings to be very smooth and even. The set of strings comes in a sealed bag so there is no oxidation or corrosion. After you have finished the grunt work, tuning these strings is very consistent and they tune to pitch without any trouble. I found the strings to be easy on my fingers. I got the medium nickel wound strings and they are on the mellow side. I like the sound and the action of the strings. I would certainly buy these again. (Pics simply show the color stays and stringing progress). ... show more

  • Dependable great sounding strings.
Style: Long Scale Size: Light, 45-130 (5-String)
These are stings I feel you're not supposed to like. Thing is, I keep coming back to them. They are everywhere and they are inexpensive compared to other comparable strings. They feel good, you know what they will sound like and about how long they will last for you. I am using the balanced tension 4 string set on my Spector LX4, they are fantastic. The strings I just bought here on Amazon are the XL170 5 string set for my Spector LX5. That bass is 35 scale and the normal "long scale" strings fit as they should. They are also great, but if I had one criticism it's the B and E string gauge. Most sets in this range are .105 for E and .125 or .130 for B. Here you get .100 for E and .130 for the B. It seems an odd jump and I suspect it has to do with keeping a tight sounding B while attempting to balance tension across the set. That's probably good on a 34 scale bass, but it would be cool to offer a more traditional .105 and .125 set if you have a 35 scale. In any case, it's not somthign that I'm conscious of when playing, just a bit of OCD and the B does rock at .130, but it also does for any strings I've tried at .125 on the 35 scale. Maybe something for 5 string similar to the balanced tension set offered for 4 string. That set has the E string at .107. That may pair pretty well with a .130 B. ... show more
