  • Excellent value!
Model: Chainsaw
So I've been back and forth on the usefulness of these mini saws until now... but after watching an actual arborist use the little 4in Stihl up in a tree I finally understood what these were actually for. First off... don't worry about bar oil, the chain speed and actual on time is literally just enough to get the bar warm... if your bar is getting hot enough that you can't touch it, it needs oiling. I simply sprayed mine with garage door lubricant that forms a dry film on the metal to metal surfaces and I literally just spray it off with WD40 and blast it with compressed air when I'm done. So... is this thing worth owning? Absolutely. Is it comparable to the actual Dewalt 8in mini saw? Nope... not even close... but there's a catch. The name brand dewalt requires two hands, and it weighs about 5lb without the battery, this thing weighs less than 3lbs with a battery. This is an actual "one handed" chainsaw. When I am up in a tree, this thing is now my go to for my undercuts on 3-6in limbs. Previously I used my handsaw for this task. This little saw doesn't cut as cleanly as an actual arborist pruning hand saw, but for chunking down branches and or limbing 2-3in branches this saw is AWESOME for the money... I got two of them at $30 per unit. It even comes with a case. Now... chainsaws are dangerous... this one is no different. It lacks any and all of the normal safety features you'd find on a saw made for the US market... The tool itself is absolutely fine, but it's not got any of the normal idiot proofing to keep you from really hurting yourself. All normal chainsaw rules apply to this... do not use the top of nose of the saw for anything or you'll quickly find out what a kickback is. YouTube is your friend here, just look up what a kickback is... If you use this saw properly, it's no worse than any other chainsaw. BTW if you don't have the Dewalt loppers... just get them. $120 for the tool only. I have those and smaller knock off. Both are excellent, but the Dewalt sheers are literally insane. This saw is what fills the gap between the dewalt sheers and my normal chainsaws. If you're looking for a basic around the house chainsaw, you can't beat these things for the money unless you want a plug in unit. The quality is totally acceptable for the base tool, and chains are only about $4 a piece... So don't bother sharpening them. 8in and 4in Chinese mini saw bars and chains should fit this unit just fine as well... and I've got a strong feeling a 4in bar and chain would scream on this unit. I'm also going to fashion some spikes to the plate where the "saw dogs" usually are on a full sized saw... that should dramatically help with the cut quality and eliminate the chatter. It's not got enough power for dogging through things, and if you try and shove it through you'll just burn out the motor... Let the tool do the work folks and it should hold up just fine. Last thing... chain tension. If you run the chain too tight, you'll just burn the saw up... you literally want the chain just tight enough to keep it on the bar. If you over tighten it, you'll wear the bar and burn up the motor. Chainsaws aren't supposed to be tight, if you pull down on the chain on the middle of the bottom of the bar, it should have enough slack to see the inner teeth of the chain. ... show more

  • Extensive use, grearbox finally failed
Model: Chainsaw
This little 9" Mellif saw has cut many oak, pine and madrone trees on my acreage over 9 months. I've made many hundreds of cuts through 4" to 6" hard wood. I use several aftermarket Dewalt 7Ah batteries to allow continuous cutting. When cutting brush the chain can bind with debris, removing the battery and pulling on the chain in reverse often clears it, otherwise simply removing the drive cover allows access. It finally failed while cutting a 12" oak stump. The gearbox became overheated and bound up. I could have prevented it giving time to cool. I'm more than satisfied with this well made chainsaw especially given the price, I'm ordering a new one. ... show more

  • Extremely nice portable 20v chainsaw
Model: Chainsaw
I must say this saw can cut! It is reasonably priced and does a great job around the house. It comes in a handy tough plastic carrying case. It does not have a oil reservoir. Although, you should use bar and chain oil on it to keep it lubricated. You can keep some in an oil can or squeeze bottle near by. It does not have a battery level either so be careful to not run your dewalt battery down to empty as you may kill the battery. The safety knob needs to pressed in before pulling the trigger to activate the chainsaw. Once the trigger is pulled, the safety knob can then be released and the trigger will remain squeezed until you let go. It comes with two chains. One on the saw, and one in a bag. Also, I was able to insert two 5Ah dewalt batteries inside the carrying case with ease and close the top. This is very convenient for traveling and carrying to your designated spot. I recommend this 20v chainsaw to anyone needing to cut small trees or limbs. No gas needed! ... show more

  • Not worth the effort
Model: Chainsaw
We bought this saw because we had small things we needed to cut down. We do not know much about chain saws and the Owner's Manual provided did not help at all. It clearly was not written for the saw we purchased. The teeth on this chain are too small to be able to use a standard chain saw sharpening tool to sharpen it. But the company does not sell one to fit this saw and makes no recommendations as to where we can purchase one. A second, backup chain for when the initial one is too dull to cut is provided. And the Owner's Manual states that the chain should be replaced when it is dull. But the company does not sell this small, nonstandard chain. They provide no instructions for how to change out the chain. The ad on Amazon states that the chain will not come lose. It did so after 15 minutes of use and fell off the bar. There were no instructions as to how to put it back on the bar. We eventually figured it out, ut it was not self-explanatory. The Troubleshooting part of the owner's manual says that ‘if the problem is that the chainsaw needs cleaning, the solution is to clean the chainsaw’. Seriously? The Owner's Manual states that while operating the saw: " Add oil when oil approx. Every15 minutes, depending on sawing intensity and stop". (Direct quote). How exactly do you add oil? The manual refers to an "oil reservoir". Where exactly is that? It is not included on the owner’s manual diagram of the chain saw (page 5 of the manual). If it exists (and I don’t think it does) it is very well hidden. For instructions on changing the chain, the manual advises (without providing a direct link) that we check YouTube videos. There are lots of chain saw instructions on YouTube. Just none that I could find for this saw. And the parts for this saw are different than, say, Dewalt, Stihl, Milwaukee chain saws, so the videos are not very helpful. The saw could be useful if I had a clue how to maintain it. Page 12 of the manual provides information for After Sales Service instructing us to contact Bosch for maintenance and repair questions as well as spare parts. We did. Bosch has never heard of this company or this saw and does not support it. The Mellif “product use advice team” will answer any questions if I provide the 10 digit article number on the faceplate of the saw. There is no faceplate and there is no number. I am returning this saw for a Milwaukee ... show more
