The first one we bought started malfunctioning during the winter and eventually was not opening or closing. I assume the wet string goes up inside and gets moisture in the motor and freezes. The second one I bought to replace it dies when it is snowing outside. I would say they probably are great in moderate weather with no rain or if they are covered well. ... show more

    • Liberating add on for your chicken coop

The media could not be loaded. The chickens and I love the automatic door as I dont have to get up at the crack of dawn everyday and the chickens dont have to wait for me. You do have to inspect the door for obstruction as it doesn't take much debris in the track to hamper its operation. I mounted the door and controller onto a separate piece of plywood so I could verify it worked in my shop and simply screw in the working assembly wityh 2 screws into the coop outside. I'm REALLY glad I did this because I can easily pull the plywood with 2 screws and bring it into the shop to clean/service/test. Its great having a button to open the door on command because sometimes i find its partially open. It would have been better if there was also a button to close the door so I could block them out when cleaning. You can close the door by setting the mode to closing using the phot sensor and covering it but thats too much effort so I just block the door as I did before I added the automatic door. I would definitely recommend the door to any chicken owner who wants to reclaim so sleeping time! ... show more

I added this to my coop so i wouldn’t have to rush out to the coop first thing in the am.. I have 4 kids so mom duties etc. anyway! I consider myself fairly handy, but this was simple to install. I watched several videos and didn’t need to keep going back to them during install.. it’s pretty straightforward! Once you figure out the display, you can see what works best for you.. I love that you’re able to do timer or light or a mix of both, super handy! My girls figured it out easy enough after they investigated the new door initially (as all chickens - they’re nosy af lol) I just had this small door completely closed off before, we didn’t use it. I would definitely recommend this. I browsed automatic doors for several weeks before I bought this - as i was having a hard time finding one that wasn’t too pricey with a power source. My coop is too far from my house to run electric to it. This was the best solution i found, and a very reasonable price IMO. My only qualm is that i have pekin ducklings brooding currently and I’m afraid they may get too fat to use the door.. but that my fault for not planning ahead ha! Overall definitely 5/5 and I also purchase their horizontal poultry nipples and they’re amazing too! ... show more

We live in south west Florida and have a heavy racoon and bobcat population. I lost several chickens to bobcats already, but a few months ago I forgot to close the coop up for the night by just two hours, as soon as I remembered I headed outside to shut them and discovered a racoon climbing out of the pen with a hen in its mouth! My chickens were roosting inside the coop and tge racoon had eaten all the eggs and when finished reached up and grabbed a hen. After that incident we purchased this automatic coop door and it has been such a blessing. It works like a charm. It is hot and humid down here and so far this unit has held up. Very pleased. Initially the first door I bought was flawed. I emailed seller and they sent me a new one meanwhile I put my faulty one in the mail and sent it back to them. I had tried a Brinsea product that absolutely would not open or close during winter at a latitude near the Canada/US border. This thing works great by contrast. I bought it because it allows the opening and closing to be set by time and light (time/time, light/light, time/light, light/time) and figured I'd just use the time feature, but as it turns out, this one works great with light sensor too. It has a button to manually open the door which is handy if it gets stuck (one of my chickens pooped against the door, the poop froze to the door and prevented it from fully opening -- the manual open was handy there). And if you want to manually close the door if all the birds have gone into the coop before the sensor triggers a close, just put a finger over the light sensor for about 5s and the door will close. Battery access is better in this design too if this gets mounted near the eaves of a coop because rather than be a top removal process as in the Brinsea, the front face comes off in this model making it much easier to access the battery compartment when the device is near the eaves of a chicken house. ... show more
