    • Fantastic camera sensor, but do not expect the wireless connection or app to work worth a damn.

The good: The camera sensor on this thing is fantastic. It's a big upgrade over the $50-$100 price range sensors like Uniden. The HDR on this is great for high contrast situations like sunset / night time. It's still not quite good enough to capture most license plates unless you are directly behind a vehicle in stand still traffic, but the technology is definitely getting better than previous generations of sensors, both in clarity and in handling of lighting conditions not conducive for traditional photography. The sticker works great in temperate climates like Pennsylvania. Much better than a suction cup design. The self-contained GPS works well. It detects speeds accurately, with a minimum of lag, maybe 4-5 seconds after a speed change, it picks it up correctly. Now the bad: The wireless in this thing is trash. The app cannot maintain a connection to the phone long enough to do anything useful. The phone often cannot connect to the device. I have flashed the thing with the latest firmware via usb and even then, the wireless is total garbage. In total, I've spent around 3 hours trying to get the wireless connection to actually work from a variety of distances and devices and it just does not work. I'm mostly using a LG V60 and a Samsung S10E, which are premium flagship android phones capable of all modern wireless standards with a great set of antennas. The phones connect to literally everything else I own including some wild Chi-Fi devices, and this is the only device that gives me consistent trouble, and it's a fairly pricey device from a major manufacturer. I do not expect to be able to use the wireless during a crash use case. I expect to have to pull the card and place a replacement card in it. With that expectation in mind, it's not much different than older generations of cameras, so not terrible - but I feel they shouldn't even try if it's going to be this bad of a user experience. I'm an expert level computer scientist who grunted my way up the ranks by doing product support for years and I couldn't get it to work. Your average Joe has 0 chance in heck to not be totally frustrated if they expect the wireless to work. The meh: Sometimes this thing resets while driving. It has an ok failsafe, where it starts back up pretty quickly, but sometimes I look at it and wonder wtf is going on. It happens once in a while, but it's enough to notice. After a few updates it is easier to connect my phone to the camera but it's slow. Does have a motion sensor but it's way to far out from the camera. my car in the driveway 50ft off the road activates everytime a car,person,animal goes by. Not enough people on my route to work report speed traps so that is not useful. The rear camera cable is like 20ft so be ready for that. As far as I can tell you can't turn off the speed, so be aware you might turn over evidence against you. No real complaints outside of the freezing and long connect times. ... show more

There’s a few things that bug me but because I have nothing to compare it too and most my gripes are with the app and not the actualI cam, I won’t rate it lower than 4. the app is extremely slow, requires a constant connection to the camera to be used in any relevant way, connection is immediately lost upon your phone sleeping or closing app, your phone will connect to the cams wifi automatically but you will still have to open the app and manually connect to the cam, the app can’t always find the cam despite your phone being connected to the cams wifi. That being said these are only things you have to deal with if you insist on using the app which you don’t need to do. The only gripe I have with the actual cam is that you can’t fully turn off the display. You can however put it on a dark mode where the screen is black and displays only your speed and time of day. ... show more

    • Compact, Easy to use Cam, with some Minor Drawbacks

I've had a Cobra for a long time, which finally gave out, so found a new one. I like this one, as it's super-easy to install and put to use but I've got a few complaints. The paperwork is good, fully understandable, with good diagrams. All instructions are intuitive, make sense, and seem to be correct. Consequently, it's easy to get this item into action quickly. It does come with an 8GB mini card, so you're basically all set. You can get a bigger card, but if you're cycling through the recording and saving only the special parts, then you don't need anything bigger. My old Cobra had a suction cup mount, which I like as that makes it easy to move to another vehicle instantly. This item has an adhesive mount, which means essentially you CAN'T move it to another vehicle. Why exactly would Cobra do that? Maybe to force you to buy a second cam to put in your other car? Seems plausible to me. The mount also does not swivel at all. Once installed--this means it's fixed in place on the windshield--you can tilt up and down, but there is no way to pan this at all. Say you want to focus the camera on your left front, or a psycho driver on either side (happened to me), or maybe even turn to the rear, you can't do it. Your only option is to pull this free of the GPS adapter and hold the stupid cam in your hand to focus on what you want to. Why wold Cobra offer a design where you can't pan/swivel it? Could it be that's because this cam is modular and you can add additional cams to perform these functions? Well, that again seems plausible. The screen is good, well-lit, and very clear. The lens has a good field of view and good focus. Overall I'm happy with this cam, but find the downsides to be very disappointing. It seems to this consumer that Cobra has designed an item that essentially requires you to acquire more ancillary equipment for it to perform fully the way a consumer might want.
