I daily drive a Valentine One Gen2, so I’m very used to premium radar detectors and had pretty high expectations going into this. I picked up the Cobra RAD 490i expecting a decent budget detector, but after spending real time with it, I was honestly surprised by how refined and capable it feels for the price. The biggest thing that stood out immediately was how usable it is in actual day-to-day driving. A lot of detectors in this price range either false constantly or feel outdated, but the RAD 490i feels modern, responsive, and well tuned. Filtering around newer vehicles with blind spot monitoring systems is surprisingly good, so it stays relatively quiet during normal driving while still giving strong and reliable alerts when it matters. Ka band performance on the highway was consistently solid and gave plenty of warning time during everyday driving. Obviously ultra high-end detectors still have advantages in maximum range and additional enthusiast-level features, but the RAD 490i honestly gets much closer to that higher-end experience than most people would expect at this price point. The feature set is also extremely impressive for the money: - USB-C connectivity - Bright OLED display - Bluetooth + Drive Smarter app integration - Front and rear LaserEye detection - Firmware update support - Digital signal processing - Extreme mode capability - Compact and modern design What I like most about the RAD 490i is that it doesn’t feel like a “cheap” detector when using it every day. Startup is fast, menus are simple, the display is clean and easy to read, and overall it feels polished and easy to trust. One thing I would personally like to see is an optional suction cup mount. The included adhesive mount is actually very secure and premium feeling, but since I switch between multiple vehicles often, a suction cup option would make moving the detector between cars easier. Overall, Cobra did a really good job with the RAD 490i. It performs well, feels modern, and offers a level of usability and refinement that honestly makes it stand out in this price range. Definitely recommended.

I've been very happy with the Cobra RAD 490i. One thing I noticed right away is that it often alerts long before I can actually see a police vehicle, which gives me plenty of time to pay attention to my speed. It does pick up a fair number of signals, but I'd rather have an early warning than none at all. I also like the design. It's compact, looks clean on the windshield, and isn't distracting while driving. The adhesive is nice to have instead of a suction cup, creating less possibility for falling. Setup was easy, and the detector has worked reliably so far. Additionally, I have connected my unit to the Drive Smarter app which is convenient to use as a navigation system and connects me to all other Cobra and Escort radar detectors on the road. This significantly increases the effectiveness of my unit since I get all of the alerts from higher preforming radar detectors as well. Overall, I think it's a great value and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a dependable radar detector.

Good quality very durable make sure when your installing it you use a alchohol wipe on your dash before sticking it on not very good installation. It does give a lot of false alarms but that is to be expected on extreme mode. The range is actually quite far and tracks fast for the money. One thing I wish they would do is have a setting to tell you the band names like the expensive ones do so i can cope and pretend im rich but hey you cant get everything you want in life. It does say system ready though so dont worry about that.

Completely Useless. Does Not Do What It Claims. I purchased the Cobra RAD 490i expecting it to actually detect and alert me to radar and police activity as advertised. Unfortunately, after using it, I honestly have no idea what I paid for. I drove past multiple police officers, a police station, and directly by a police department, and this thing remained completely silent. Not a beep. Not an alert. Nothing. If a radar detector can’t detect police activity when you’re literally driving past a police department, what exactly is it supposed to detect? I gave it multiple opportunities and had the same experience. The product looks nice, the buttons feel good, and the packaging makes it sound like you’re buying some advanced next-generation radar detector. But in actual use, it has been completely unreliable and essentially useless. I bought this specifically for the features Cobra advertises, and it has failed to provide the basic function I expected from it. A radar detector that doesn’t alert you when there is actual radar activity is about as useful as a smoke detector that doesn’t make a sound when there’s smoke. Very disappointed with this purchase. I would not recommend wasting your money on this product. If you’re considering buying one, I’d seriously look at other options.

Here’s a polished version that keeps your personal experience and sounds natural for a product review: I was a little skeptical about how well the Cobra RAD 490i radar detector would actually work. I used to buy radar detectors back in the ’80s and honestly didn’t even realize they were still around. I’ve been very impressed with this one. It works exceptionally well and has plenty of automatic settings, or you can customize the settings manually. Every time I get a Ka-band alert, sure enough, there’s a police car somewhere nearby. I ended up turning X-band off because it mostly picked up interference and false alerts from businesses. Once I got it set up the way I wanted, it’s been great. Very impressed with the Cobra RAD 490i and definitely glad I bought it.

I take the same route every day, 5 days a week, down a local road notorious for speed traps. While I do respect the speed limit signs, I've still been pulled over (thankfully no tickets) more times than I would like. I was in the market for an affordable laser detector to help just warn/remind me if a car would be parked en route. Just a little friendly reminder to tap the brakes before that hill leading into the trap. This little tool does the trick. This has an impressive response speed for its price point, and the shared network alerts create an all-for-one, one-for-all approach to speed trap locations. 5 stars for quality and features, and you can't beat the price.
