I only have some greying around the hairline but I think this would still blend with more greying. I put it on my roots and hairline first for 10 minutes then apply the rest. The box says do 20 minutes, but I leave on for 30 mins because I really want to make sure those greys are getting soaked to the max. Use your judgement depending how porous your hair is. If I were to get stinging, I would wash it off sooner. For me, the color feels really gentle and no stinging or discomfort. It smells nice. I have been using Natural Instincts color for many years, doing the fun colors as a teen sometimes. I don't do the fun colors as often now mainly because with my greying it's such a delicate balance, like redoing the roots and all then i have pink hair with brown and grey roots.. don't always feel up to the increased maintenance. If anything, I think the formula has gotten even better and gentler/more natural over the years. The color I got was 6C which is a neutral light brown. My natural color has lots of gold in it so I offset it by doing neutral or cooler shades of brown, as inevitably my natural gold tones will start to show thru as the color fades. For this brand, the neutral and cool shades truly remove my brassiness and the greys are blended into a light brownish or highlight looking, for about 5-6 weeks. Sadly, my greys don't always 100% absorb the color, sometimes I still have some greys but they are blended into highlighted tones. It takes more intensive work to fully color the greys, more intense than semi-permanent color. During the summer I do a warmer shade like the light caramel brown, I like to rotate out seasonally with slight color changes. It looks even better when out in the sun as the sun naturally lightens it. Over the past 6 months I experimented with color depositing shampoos. They actually cover my grey better, like near 100%, BUT it absolutely destroyed and dried out my hair to the point I suffered significant hair loss. Natural Instincts never has been harsh like that for my thinner porous hair, from now on I am sticking to this and similar gentle brands. ... show more

    • Favorite for gray coverage without the damage
Color: 4 Dark Brown Size: 5.85 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
This has been my go-to hair color for a while. It is true to shade. I have dark brown hair and most hair dye that’s marked “dark brown” is actually deep black and ruins my hair. But this hair dye is truly dark brown, and doesn’t come off warm or orange tinted. The conditioner keeps the color looking fresh and shiny and my hair feels really soft after using it. I’m about 40% gray and I’m amazed at how well this hair dye hides my grays. Even as it fades, my grays are still camouflaged because the dye holds onto them well. I appreciate that I can apply this without the horrible, strong chemical smell that other hair dyes have. Overall, this dye is my favorite and I will continue to use it. ... show more

I’ve been growing out my natural hair color, and so far this product helps soften the growth line in my hair. (Black tank — before application, blue shirt — after) I have had lowlights professionally added to the lower parts of my hair to help connect the previously-highlighted sections back to the natural color. The cool dark blonde color felt too dark for me, I may experiment with the dark neutral blond. I have a few stray grey hairs and this will temporarily cover them, but gray coverage is not my personal goal. I have grays on top and all around my head, most are hidden but there are a lot of white, and gray and I have medium length hair. Make sure you have at least 2.5 hours of time to read and complete this hair coloring on your own. I decided to use a brush to apply the product to my hair after squeezing it on my hair line per the paper instructions. Do the front of both sides first after you section your hair into 4 quadrants and tie it up or clip each section. Start at the root and do your best to rub it in so it saturates all strands. Start the timer after you have done the 2 front ( left and right) sections. Be prepared to leave the product on for at least 30 minutes. It doesn’t drip as much as some reviews suggested, but it does stain skin, clothes, and surfaces. I covered my neck down with a big plastic bag and rub Vaseline petroleum jelly around and behind my ears, on back of my neck, on forehead, top of nose across and above my eyebrows and on both sides of my face near my ears. Wear 2 pairs of gloves so it’s easier to switch once you have to rinse the product off with just warm water in the shower. A little dollop of the conditioner goes a long way even though my hair is a few inches past my shoulders. I find that rinsing is a bit time-consuming because I don’t think I was able to rinse all the product off. Found this out after I thought the water looked clear, but after I rinsed the conditioner off after applying it and leaving it on hair for 2 minutes, there was still some gray tint in the water as I was rinsing the conditioner off. I’d do the first rinse without using gloves so I can scrub the color off with my nails more. By the way, make sure your hair is dirty when you color it so the natural hair oil will protect your scalp from the harshness of the hair dye chemicals!! Today is the 10th day and I’ve used the conditioner only a total of 1 time. My hair is still blue black from the coloring (my natural hair is black with white and gray), but it doesn’t look blue in person. I did not see any grays or white hair, and my hair looks smooth & healthy naturally. No bald spots at all! P.S.: photos are my hair a few hours after I colored it. You can see some blue around the hair line, but I used facial wipes to easily remove it. ... show more

I am transitioning to going natural. This is the way to do it. Your new growth never changes it natural color yet gives it a temporary color blending your hair. I try to avoid the ends. As your hair grows and trimming it, you will be one day be product free.
