The Champion Power Equipment 201353 3-inch Portable Chipper-Shredder is designed to dependably deal with branches, brush, leaves, and yard debris by transforming them into mulch or decorative accents for your yard. This efficient machine allows you to reduce 20 bags of leaves and debris to only 1 bag. Equipped with two hardened-steel chipper blades, the chipper chute is designed to handle limbs and branches up to 3 inches in diameter. The shredder chute has a 15.2-inch shredder blade and six shredder hammers, perfect for shredding shrubbery, leaves or yard debris up to ½ inch or less in diameter. It has so much power, it's a bit scary. Very well packaged (a heavy box over a wooden support all on a pallet and shrink-wrapped) and easy to assemble. It started on the first pull. It is easy to move about given its weight, though it takes some effort to get it up hills. It is noisy, so wear hearing protection. The thing that impressed me most is the power. Only the largest branches put through the 3" chipper port slowed it down, but only a little. Don't feed flexible vines, such as wild grape, into the shredder chute, as these can wrap around the cutting wheel, stall the engine, and require disassembly to disentangle it. I found that out the hard way. If you don't use the bag, the force of the expelled air sends the shredded material flying a bit, not a problem depending on how you use it. I have not used any other model of this kind of machine, so I have no comparison, but getting small branches, such as those produced by a white birch, down the chute is pretty difficult. And you don't want to shove your hand down there, so I crafted my own tool of sorts (picture attached) that I made from the bottom of the packing crate. It works very well, such that Champion should consider supplying such a tool with the machine. It would cost nothing. If I were to make another, though, I would make it wider in the middle so that it would be stopped by the chute itself. As it is, it is narrow enough to reach the moving parts.     • Great chipper, good shredder
The engine is powerful and starts easily. It's incredibly loud, like all chippers are. It works at least as well as the Bearcat that I owned years ago, and that's a big compliment. The chipper is fantastic and works better than the shredder, which easily clogs unless loaded sparingly. It weighs about 175 lbs. and has big wheels, is easy to move around. ... show more

    • Shredding quality is substandard Chipping is excellent
Bought to replace my older Sears 8-HP chipper/shredder. Unit does a poor job of shredding materials (leaves, small sticks, stems etc.) fed into top chute section. I believe the issue is because there are no retainer bars at the discharge chute to hold back material while it is reduced/shredded to a smaller size. (The Sears unit has this as a standard function.) Most of the leaves that are put into the hopper simply blow right through with little to no shredding/size reduction. This is a problem for me as this material is added to my compost bin. Without size reduction it will be much harder for the compost organisms to "eat" it down to its final journey to becoming dirt. The chipper function works very well. The chip size is very small. However, the slotted rubber safety cover over the infeed chute is a real pain. It is near impossible to feed smaller limbs/twigs/branches through it without them breaking outside of the feed tube. Difficulty can also occur with larger branches that are covered or have some side branhing stubs on them. I will make final judgement on its shredding abilty this fall after the millions of oak and other leaves in my tree-filled yard drop and are collected for addition to the compost bin. Once you figure out the best way to use it, it’s a beast. My advice is to use the smaller intake 99% of the time. The top chute does say it’s for smaller stuff, but the other intake just does a better job with everything you feed in. I clogged up the chipper twice trying to feed smaller sticks through the top. Stick to leaves only on the top, and everything else through the 3 inch side intake. ... show more

    • Breaks easily; customer service sucks.
Made me drive this an hour for an evaluation to prove that the blades went through the chamber. Then refused to ship a new one despite technician saying it was covered under warranty. Buyer beware.

Both shredder and chipper worked well. Only issue I had was with green cactuses. Manual said they would gum up the shredder and they did. But it was easy to clear and continue to shred.

    • It works flawlessly.
Once we learned how to use, we had no problem going through a large batch of branches at home. Highly recommended. It includes everything you need to start using it immediately, except the gasoline, of course. It includes the oil and funnel to put it in.
