I waited a few weeks to write this because I wanted to have adequate time on the unit. So far I have put 10 hours on the Champion 7-Ton Gas powered log splitter and made sure we were past the engine break-in time. For Background, I run about 5 cords a year through my wood appliance at home and for 4 years have either been renting a 40-ton from the Hardware store or borrowing a neighbor's 20-ton Huskee. I have used several 7 and 9 ton electric splitters as well. I purchased this unit after reading nearly every review on Amazon and on the Champion Website. Assembly: The Box took 2 people to move, but was delivered without any damage. Assembly was super easy - maybe 1 hour. Out of the box, several cotter pins on the lever were damaged on the unit, but those are a few cents at the hardware store. Instructions were detailed and minimal tools needed. Many reviews referenced problems filling hydraulic fluid - folks need to understand that is the total system capacity and not the tank capacity, so there is a bleeding process to go through to fill to the full amount. The hardest part was installing the suction hose; space constraints and the reinforcement in the hose itself made it challenging to install but we muscled it on and tightened the clamp. Engine came to life easily and assembly was complete. Operation: Unit starts easily. Compared to other log splitters, this little 98cc engine is more cold-blooded. After start, it need a minute or two to move the throttle lever to 'full run'. You need to listen to the engine and slowly move the lever once it warms up and sounds like it is running rich. This is common on small engines, but more noticeable on this unit compared to other log splitters I have used. Just understand that it may need more time to warm up before use. The power of the unit shocked me. I have used 7 and 9 ton electric units, and this 7-ton gas unit far outperforms anything electric. The manual says 50 pound max but let me assure you, I have loaded much, MUCH heavier pieces. Really anything the 20-ton Huskee could do, this unit can do. When doing 100-pound green elm and hackberry crotch pieces, we just attack them like we would with a maul; start on the sides, work your way in. It handled oak crotch pieces and even a few complex hardened ash joints as well. Many reviews referenced leaking relief valve. I noticed this as well. Upon investigating, we found the issue went away by ensuring the unit was perfectly level. Any up or down angle and it leaked and the instruction warn of this as well. Compared to larger log splitters we have been using, this unit is more sensitive to being level for proper operation. The unit is extremely fuel efficient. The most annoying thing about renting large splitters is having to fill up the tank just as I get in a groove. This unit will work for 45 minutes and gas will still be high up in the tank! Again, a factor of the small engine. Ergonomics: This is where I would give it a 4/5. Being low to the ground means we are hunched over most of the time. It is nice to be able to split heavier pieces lower to the ground, but we feel it in our lower backs after a good splitting session. The ram is comparatively slower compared to larger units we rent, so more time hunched over operating the lever. The unit is light, easy to wheel around. Not instead of moving my logs to a splitting area, I just wheel the splitter around to the log areas. Two people can easily lift it into a truck or van and the solid tires are well constructed. Upgrade: The 4th picture is an aftermarket engine monitor we installed to measure RPM and tach time. To stick to maintenance schedules, I recommend this be purchased and installed. This unit was $12 and installed in 5 minutes. Conclusion: This was a great buy! I am giving it 5-stars even though it has some quirks. It's a 7-ton log splitter and behaves like a 7-ton log splitter. Amazing power for it's size and it outperforms comparable 7 or 9 ton electric units. It's light enough to move freely with one person and has been able to handle everything I haven thrown at it. Being a smaller unit, just pay attention to ensuring it is leveled correctly before use and listen to the engine as it goes through the warm-up process before moving right away to 'run'. This unit is more 'cold blooded' than larger splitters. It's small enough it can just wheel into the garage when done and is super mobile around the property. I would absolutely buy this unit again!

This is going to be a bit of a mixed review,,at least for now. First there is many things I do like about this machine, and a few design flaws I don't. Firstly after only 2 1/2 hrs of splitting I noticed the rails on the tank/beam galling badly . Upon further inspection I found the bracket/shoe on the end of the ram lifts right off the rails , the "Lips " barley even wrap around the rails enough to keep it from coming off ,, undoubtedly that will bend the ram if not addressed. Second, the ram stops about 2 " from the wedge causing incomplete splitting on stringy type woods or wet wood, I'm splitting dry ash and green maple right now. Adding a small block of wood takes care of that though pushing it all the way through. Thirdly, the wedge has flat sides with no flare in back and it won't quite spread the wood enough to get a complete split ,,some angled "wings" welded on the back should allow the wood to spread further allowing for better performance and a modification I will make later-on as it will effect the warranty otherwise . Fourth, and a very small issue, the screw for the vent on the hydraulic tank is not captured to keep it from falling off during operation, I've nearly lost it in the sawdust 2-3 times in the first 2 1/2 hours of use,,,remove it completely and stick it in your pocket or it will definitely get lost in short order or sometimes it vibrates closed. Myself, I'll be replacing mine with with a much better captured vent fitting ! Now on the positive side,,, There's lots and lots of power for a compact unit with it only struggling some on a couple bigger real knotty pieces. Runs and starts great. Overall quality looks really good other than my ram bracket appearing to be out of spec and to wide to stay on the rails. Very easy to store and maneuver around but it will be much better when I put a tow hitch on it for my garden tractor to pull it down to the South 40. I contacted customer service about the issue with the ram bracket and No Problem getting a new bracket and as a matter of fact I found Mike @ customer service outstanding to work with and quite helpful so unless there's some snafu getting the part I'm quite happy with the customer service from Champion. So that's the good and the bad, now I've got about 5- 6 hours of total use on this machine. Honestly other than the small annoying issues I mentioned it's a pretty darn good unit over-all IMHO. We'll see if the new ram bracket takes care of the only major problem I have with this product. 9/24/2019 Review Update,,, After contacting Champion and speaking with Mike all my issues were addressed and the replacement for the out of spec part is in route and will arrive in 3-4 days. I noticed the cylinder did in fact have a bend or got bent the third time the push bracket came off the rails . So either the bracket or cylinder was the issue to start with, either way Champion is sending both to get me back up and running in a timely fashion. As a master level mechanic in the marine and automotive field for >45 years I found Champions warrentee department and staff OUTSTANDING to work with !!! I only wish as many companies I've worked with over the years did as good a job handling my warrentee issues as Champion has. Top Notch Service ! Owning 2 pieces of Champion power equipment, a generator I've had for a couple years with 0 issues and the great service I've received on my splitter issue,,,I'm now a Champion "fan Boy" and can't say enough good things about them. From my experiences I can definitely recommend there products and this is where I'll turn for future power equipment purchases ! IMHO you can buy with confidence from Champion and I don't think you'll be disappointed at all. Once I get this splitter issue resolved I expect just as good things from it as well, just like my generator.

I was quite surprised upon delivery that the product was not assembled, and at the amount of assembly required. In addition to the time and substantial tooling required (every fastener is a different size) including an overhead crane as I was working alone, the next surprise was having to buy 12 gallons of hydraulic oil, as per the manual, only the assembled units ship with oil. Amazon stated that since it arrived disassembled, they would not help with either assembly or the oil, even though their description does not mention it ships disassembled. The crating was poor, and many of the parts incurred cosmetic damage. Took 3 days for the freight service Amazon used to get from their terminal to my home, which is 2 blocks away. I’m hoping my experience improves upon use. Beware what you’re getting…..there is a reason it costs what it does. Moving on…..the splitter is heavy duty and engine started right off, runs smooth. No leaks on hydraulic system. Cycles smoothly. Very powerful. Was not able to stress the unit with anything I had around. Quite a load to move around, but once set, runs smooth and solid. The rating is for the machine itself. Amazon experience would be zero stars, which is a shame as our family has had Prime for many years. It is true that a poor experience can erase many years of good service.
