  • Exceptional Charger from a Quality Name
Immediately put this to use on a dead battery and was impressed with how quickly it charged it. The screen showed both the charging current and voltage so I was able to track progress. Would love to see a % charge indicated but that was not in units functions. One item I did do was set the charge body on some small 1x3 wood pieces to raise it up as the cooling fan is on the bottom of the unit. Just me but wanted to make sure there was good air flow. left overnight and in the morning the unit was in the float charging mode. Unit never got hot (checked during night) so that was a comfort for leaving it over night on workbench. Highly recommend ... show more

  • Worked great UNTIL it didn't
I used this charger for 14 months. Then it stopped altogether. The warranty lasts for 12 months . So I guess I'm out of luck

  • Pretty good charger, room for improvement
This automotive battery charger works as advertised. Overall, I am mostly satisfied with its features and build quality. Some observations, in no particular order: - This charger is only for larger (>30AH or so) batteries. The charge profile is charging to ~14.50V at 10-11A in constant current mode, then topping off at ~14.50V until the current drops to 1A and then float charging at ~13.70V. The voltages are slightly high but not unacceptable. The problem for smaller batteries (such as the 7-9AH variety) is that the initial charge current is too high and the 1A threshold before switching to float mode is also too high. The smaller batteries will not be charged fully. I wish there was a third button to switch between smaller / larger batteries. To be fair, the product is advertised specifically as an automotive battery charger. - LiFePo4 batteries are charged to 13.80V until current drops to 1A. The unit then switches to float mode and continues to charge the battery at 13.80V indefinitely. - The charger I received was clearly refurbished even though it was sold as new. There was a second seal on the package over the opened old one, and they didn't even bother to re-coil the cables neatly, just stuffed them into the box. Not dinging stars for this, as I assume this was an oversight and you will get a brand new charger. - The clamps are not great quality. They are powder-coated metal without any protective rubber or plastic boots on them. The powder coating appears to be non-conductive, but when the coating wears off, I would be wary of shorting the clamps when connecting them. A single white zip tie is installed to prevent the clamp wires from splitting too far. - The screen becomes washed out when viewed at a >45 degree angle vertically. Otherwise it is bright and easy to read. - The unit is distributed by Baccus Global LLC and licensed to carry the CAT branding. It is made in China. A nearly identical charger is sold under the DeWalt brand, model DXAEC10. The DeWalt charger is slightly more expensive but has better clamps. The electronics are identical. Note that if you need warranty service, you will have to go through Baccus Global, not CAT or DeWalt. - The charger's display alternates between voltage and current readout. The numbers have 0.1V / 0.1A resolution and match my multimeter almost exactly. - At the moment, there is only one other review (1 star), where the reviewer complains that the charger will not charge a battery with less than 2V. This is not a valid criticism. A lead acid battery is fully discharged at 10V. It is not always safe to charge a battery that is completely dead. Doing so may cause the battery to overheat and/or release excessive amounts of hydrogen. - The charger is ETL listed (but not UL listed). Based on a bit of research, ETL is similar to UL -- perhaps a bit less stringent. This is a big plus over cheaper no-name chargers. I personally would never leave a device plugged in unattended for long periods of time without some sort of third-party certification. - The charger is fairly small and lightweight. There is a small fan in it that kicks in only as needed and is not too loud. Overall, build quality is pretty good (except for the clamps). ... show more

  • Battery Charger.
Works like a charm.

  • Faied after sevral uses
After several uses it's not supplying any voltage. The fan comes on for 30 seconds then shuts off. The LCD screen is lit but blank, except for the 12V lead acid symbol. It will not enter float mode. It worked after I bought it to fully charge a replacement 12v battery: it brought the battery up to full charge and then entered the float mode Now, after several uses, nothing. ... show more

Works great

  • Good charger, fast!
This is a substantial sized charger, bigger than the trickle charger or the 2 amp chargers that are common. The build quality is really good, it seems rugged like it could take a few tumbles without harm. There are many control buttons to figure out, just the lithium button and the everything else button. The alligator clamps are a good size and they are super stiff. I consider this a good thing but some folks may have difficulty bending the arms together. I hooked this up to a few year old motorcycle battery that was at about 25% charge. It immediately went up to 9.7 amps of charge on the display. I like that it shows what the battery is taking. A few minutes later it was only taking 7.4 amps, which is to be expected as the battery gets closer to a full charge. When I came back a couple hours later it was displaying an "F" which I think means "full". Sorry, didn't read the book much on this one. It wasn't overly warm at any point that I noticed. I don't know if this is built by CAT or if it is just a licensed product, but it's good stuff, I do recommend! ... show more

  • Caught on fire
I plugged it in and walked away for 10 seconds, the Cat charger started catching on fire internally. My car filled with a thick white stinky smoke. If I had this plugged in longer it probably would have caught my car on fire! I would not recommend this!
